Labor Union praises new Central Bank Governor's positions, emphasis on returning depositors' funds

National News05-04-2025
NNA - In an issued statement by General Labor Union Head, Bechara Al-Asmar, he praised "the honorable stances of Lebanon's new Central Bank Governor, Karim Saeed, who emphasized the return of depositors' funds through a transparent action plan and roadmap, based on placing the burden of losses resulting from the financial collapse and chaos that has prevailed since the outbreak of protests in late 2019, and the resulting smuggling of funds and the random disposal of other assets, on three parties - the state, the banks, and the Central Bank of Lebanon."
The Union also congratulated the new Governor on his intention to conduct a thorough investigation to determine responsibilities to bring those involved to justice before the judiciary. "This falls within the framework of good governance, responsible and independent of all political interference, as the Governor declared in his statements," Al-Asmar added.
"The General Labor Union, the most representative body of all Lebanese laborers in various sectors, and the one most affected by the evaporation of deposits and the lack of any clear and planned plan to return them, looks with aspiration to the new Governor, Mr. Karim Saeed, hoping that all concerned will cooperate constructively with him so that he can establish the beginning of solutions that restore confidence to depositors in their certain right to recover their lifetime's earnings and compensation," Al-Asmar concluded.

Lebanon's Central Bank Bans Interactions with Hezbollah's Al-Qard Al-Hassan

Lebanon's central bank has banned licensed financial institutions from any direct or indirect interactions with Iran-backed Hezbollah's financial institution Al-Qard Al-Hassan, according to a circular seen by Reuters on Tuesday. The US Department of Treasury imposed sanctions on Al-Qard Al-Hassan in 2007, saying the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah used the institution as a cover to manage 'financial activities and gain access to the international financial system.' Al-Qard Al-Hassan, founded in 1983, describes itself as a charitable organization which provides loans to people according to Islamic principles that forbid interest. Israel struck branches of the institution during its war with the group last year. The organization, which operates under a license granted by the Lebanese government, has more than 30 branches, mostly in predominantly Shia Muslim areas of Beirut, southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

MPs meet in plenary session focused on Hezbollah disarmament

by Naharnet Newsdesk 15 July 2025, 14:25 Lebanese Forces MP George Adwan criticized Tuesday the government's lack of progress in restoring the state's authority and disarming Hezbollah as lawmakers convened in a plenary session focused on Hezbollah's disarmament. "We don't want the government of hope to become a government of missed opportunities," Adwan said. Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Jebran Bassil said he supports Hezbollah's disarmament but not by force, while Hezbollah MP Ibrahim al-Moussawi urged "those who claim to be friends of Lebanon" to provide the Lebanese army with defensive weapons "to protect the country against the enemy." "We all know there is no political decision to support the (Lebanese)army and there is a veto against arming it," he said. MP Jamil al-Sayyed criticized U.S. envoys Amos Hochstein, Morgan Ortagus, and Tom Barrack, who he said "threatened Lebanon with civil war". "It's as if we've become an experimental field for these envoys." MP Fouad Makhzoumi called for Hezbollah's disarmament and proposed to discuss it in a cabinet session.

Report: Lebanon demands two-stage Israeli withdrawal

Lebanon is waiting for a commitment from Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanon over two phases, a Lebanese source concerned with the negotiations with U.S. envoy Tom Barrack said. The first phase 'should begin immediately, after Lebanon carried out all its obligations during this period through the Lebanese Army's deployment south of the Litani and Hezbollah's pullback from the area,' the source told al-Binaa newspaper, commenting on reports that Barrack has demanded a timetable for finalizing the file of arms. The second phase would be 'withdrawal to beyond Lebanon's international border, in addition to halting attacks and the violation of Lebanon's airspace and waters,' the source added.
