
Retired faculty of BDU urge digitisation of pension process
They say the move would spare elderly pensioners the inconvenience of travelling to the university or a post office every year to submit their life certificate.
"The central govt has already introduced Jeevan Pramaan, but the university is yet to implement it," said M Selvam, president of the Bharathidasan University Retired Faculty Association (BURFA).
BDU currently processes pension disbursement only upon receiving the pensioners' life certificate each year, either through direct submission or via attested documents sent by post.
"The process of digitisation will remove the need for aged individuals, many with health issues, to physically appear at a gazette office. It's a one-time task for the university to set it up, yet they are slow-walking this process," Selvam added.
Selvam added that the demand was also raised during a recent general body meeting held late last month, where it was urged for the university to expedite the rollout of such digital services.
When contacted, a senior official from the BDU told TOI that the process is almost over without wanting to commit to an exact time.
"Ninety-eight percent of the pensioners have been identified. Around 10 to 12 cases remain, which will be resolved very soon. After that, we will roll it out," the official said.
"Some of the pensioners are very senior and old retired faculty members of the institution, and we are working to identify them and ensure it is inclusive of everyone."

BENGALURU: Namma Metro is the breath of Bengalureans: safe, predictable and reliable. But on Friday night, the Metro broke away from its routine for a life-saving mission. The Metro facilitated its first-ever organ transport, becoming the second Metro in India to undertake such an initiative. A donated liver was transported from Vydehi Hospital in Whitefield (East Bengaluru) to Sparsh Hospital located in Rajarajeshwarinagar (South Bengaluru) via Metro, covering 31 kilometres and 32 stations along the Purple Line in a mere 55 minutes. 'The initiative showcased how a public transit system can also serve critical medical emergencies. Regular services remained unaffected as the operation was conducted at 8.42 pm, when Whitefield Station was relatively less crowded. Only the last coach of the train was reserved for the medical team, and passengers were asked to shift to other coaches,' said the BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer Yashwant Chavan. 'The operation was meticulously planned, with the last coach cleared for the mission and station elevators kept free for emergency use. Chief Security Officer Selvam supervised the transfer along the Purple Line,' he added. The organ was first transported via a 5.5-kilometre 'green corridor' from Vydehi Hospital to Whitefield Metro Station, where it arrived at 8.38 pm under escort by a doctor and seven medical staff. Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) then dedicated the last coach of a regular service train for the mission. Metro security teams cleared elevators and ensured uninterrupted movement at all stations. Metro personnel, along with an Assistant Security Officer (ASO), coordinated security checks and documentation before the team boarded the train.

‘Ten Rupee Doctor' dies at 96 in Tamil Nadu's Pattukottai
THANJAVUR: Dr T A Kanagarathinam, also known as 'Ten Rupee Doctor' passed away on Saturday at the age of 96 due to age-related health issues in Pattukottai, Thanjavur. Dr. Kanagarathinam, a resident of Srinivasapuram, is survived by his wife, K. Rajalakshmi has three daughters and a son. He had been bedridden for the past five years. According to sources, he started his medical career in the late 1950s and he established a clinic in Periya Theru during the 1960s. Initially, as a gynecologist, he charged a consultation fee of Rs 2, increased it to Rs 5, and later from 1990, he maintained a nominal fee of Rs 10. 'Kottai' Ambidhasan and a retired headmaster N Selvam from Pattukottai, writing a book about the doctor titled "En Vergal. Vizhuthugal', said that the doctor during his career has overseen thousands of childbirths. Speaking to TNIE, Selvam said that he has contributed his service to over 50 villages in and around the taluk. Sometimes, the doctor also provided free consultation to those who were unable to pay even Rs 10 as a consultation fee. "He ran the hospital on a service basis and he even provided free medicines to the people from a poor background. Since he collected only Rs 10 as a consultation fee and with his experience in taking care of normal childbirth, people especially from rural areas throng to his clinic," Selvam added. It may also be noted that he waived off a total of Rs 9 lakh rent from his tenants in the commercial complex he owns adjacent to the hospital during the Covid period.
