Retired faculty of BDU urge digitisation of pension process
Trichy: Retired professors of Bharathidasan University (BDU) are urging the institution to implement a digital portal linked to the Centre's 'Jeevan Pramaan', to digitise the process of processing pension claims. They say the move would spare elderly pensioners the inconvenience of travelling to the university or a post office every year to submit their life certificate. "The central govt has already introduced Jeevan Pramaan, but the university is yet to implement it," said M Selvam, president of the Bharathidasan University Retired Faculty Association (BURFA). BDU currently processes pension disbursement only upon receiving the pensioners' life certificate each year, either through direct submission or via attested documents sent by post. "The process of digitisation will remove the need for aged individuals, many with health issues, to physically appear at a gazette office. It's a one-time task for the university to set it up, yet they are slow-walking this process," Selvam added. Selvam added that the demand was also raised during a recent general body meeting held late last month, where it was urged for the university to expedite the rollout of such digital services. When contacted, a senior official from the BDU told TOI that the process is almost over without wanting to commit to an exact time. "Ninety-eight percent of the pensioners have been identified. Around 10 to 12 cases remain, which will be resolved very soon. After that, we will roll it out," the official said. "Some of the pensioners are very senior and old retired faculty members of the institution, and we are working to identify them and ensure it is inclusive of everyone."

No reprieve for ex-lorry driver as Federal Court dismisses final appeal in 2016 culpable homicide
PUTRAJAYA, June 16 — The Federal Court today upheld the 18-year prison sentence of a former lorry driver convicted of culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the death of an Indian national in 2016. A three-member bench consisting of Justices Datuk Zabariah Mohd Yusof, Datuk Nordin Hassan and Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera unanimously dismissed R. Kamaraj's final appeal against his conviction and sentence. 'We do not find any reason to disturb the findings of the courts below, both in terms of the conviction and sentence,' said Justice Zabariah, affirming the Court of Appeal's decision, which upheld the Seremban High Court's ruling. Kamaraj, 35, was found guilty by the High Court for causing the death of M. Selvam, 39, in a school compound in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan, at 8pm on November 27, 2016. He had initially been charged with two others – S. Kumaravelan and P. Tanabalan – for murder. Tanabalan, 42, passed away before the trial started. On December 29, 2021, the High Court convicted both Kamaraj and Kumaravelan, 31, for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Kamaraj was sentenced to 18 years' imprisonment, while Kumaravelan received a 13-year jail term. Kamaraj appealed to the Court of Appeal, but his appeal was dismissed on April 29, last year. He then brought his case to the Federal Court. Kumaravelan, meanwhile, withdrew his appeal at the Court of Appeal. During the trial, a florist testified that Selvam, her employee, was taken by three men, including the appellant, from her stall following a dispute involving money she had entrusted to Selvam. The woman told the court that Kamaraj became enraged when Selvam admitted to spending part of the money and requested more time to repay it. She testified she had been in a relationship with the appellant (Kamaraj) at that time and had saved the money for their intended marriage. Selvam was subsequently assaulted and was hospitalised. He later died from his injuries. — Bernama

Cutting-edge assistive devices galore at disability expo
Chennai: Navigate differently using assistive devices and breakthrough tech solutions — this is what the Tech4All 2025 showcased for two days in the city through lived experiences. The two-day expo of innovation designed for persons with disabilities (PwD) was not an exhibition but a conversation. For individuals with disabilities were directly involved in testing new tools, sharing feedback, and highlighting their specific needs. Several companies, including startups from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad, participated in the expo at Kalaivanar Arangam, displaying advanced technologies aimed at supporting people with disabilities. Around 1,500 people, 60% of whom were persons with disabilities, had registered for the event. Attendees were able to try out demonstrations of artificial limbs, 360-degree VR videos designed especially for children with autism and mental challenges, AI-powered glasses, and electric wheelchair bikes. "We are glad that the govt has organised an exclusive expo for the PwD community, and we were able to experience many advanced technologies. I came across motorised wheelchair bikes and tried them—they were helpful, comfortable, and surprisingly affordable compared to market rates. These devices are also quite advanced. We saw various technologies designed for different types of disabilities," said M Selvam, a wheelchair user. Students from schools for children with disabilities also visited the exhibition over the two days. They explored games specifically developed for visually impaired and autistic children. The students gained insights into the available facilities and shared their feedback on the stalls based on their experiences. Many parents and caregivers placed orders for devices, particularly motorised bikes, games, sensor-enabled artificial limbs, and spinal cord injury support devices. A Mumbai-based company, Robo Bionics, showcased a bionic arm and hand with a sense of human touch. According to co-founder Anil Nair, the device functions with the help of sensors and has already benefited at least 60 individuals across the country.
