US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Malaysia for Asean meetings

SUBANG JAYA - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived here today to attend high-level talks held in conjunction with the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) here, hosted by Malaysia under its 2025 Asean Chairmanship.
This visit marks Rubio's first to Asia since assuming office earlier this year.
Rubio is leading the US delegation at the Asean-led meetings taking place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from July 8 to 11.
The delegation landed at the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Base here at 7.39am.
They were received by Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Special Functions, Datuk Syed Mohamad Bakri Syed Abd Rahman, US Ambassador to Malaysia Edgard D. Kagan and Chargé d'Affaires at the US Mission to Asean, Kate Rebholz. According to the US Department of State, Rubio is scheduled to participate in the Asean-United States Post-Ministerial Conference, the East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, and the AseanRegional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, all taking place from Thursday.
He is also expected to hold bilateral discussions with senior Malaysian officials during his visit.
All Asean foreign ministers are attending the meetings, except for Myanmar, which is represented by a senior official. Timor-Leste is participating as an observer.
The ARF, a key component of the AMM's wider programme, brings together ASEAN, its Dialogue Partners and other strategic players, including the US, China, Russia, the European Union (EU), Japan and Australia.
Malaysia is hosting the AMM for the fifth time, having previously chaired ASEAN in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015.
The US began formal engagement with ASEAN in 1977, a decade after the regional bloc's formation.
The relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2015 and further upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. - BERNAMA

KENINGAU, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Communications Ministry hopes the Ministry of Education (MOE) will continue to support the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) so that the programme can be carried out in schools as part of efforts to improve digital literacy among students. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said this was important as KIS educates both primary and secondary school students about internet safety, given its increasing usage today. She said the campaign's content is tailored to suit the students' age levels — Level One for Years One to Three, and Level Two for Years Four to Six, as well as secondary schools. 'We are requesting cooperation from the MOE to allow us into schools so we can involve schools in educating students on how to stay safe online. 'For primary schools, KIS will carry out interactive activities to help them understand. They may not need too much exposure to issues like online gambling and scams, but cyberbullying is one of the key issues they might face,' she told reporters after attending the KIS programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Puteh here today. Teo said the KIS programme, launched on Jan 21, focuses on four areas — cyberbullying, online scams and gambling, child sexual exploitation, and data protection and digital literacy — and aims to reach over 10,000 educational institutions by the end of this year. She said school students are also provided with information on child sexual exploitation, which is seen as one of the issues they may encounter. A total of 344 schools nationwide are targeted to be involved in the KIS rollout from May to August this year, including 64 schools in Sabah. 'As of July 1, the programme has been implemented in 221 schools, involving 31,246 participants, comprising students, teachers and parents,' she said, adding that aside from schools, the campaign also receives support from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in developing engaging co-curricular activities.

ASEAN foreign ministers have set an ambitious target to realise the ASEAN Power Grid by 2045, reinforcing their shared vision for a more connected, secure and low-carbon energy future across Southeast Asia. In a Joint Communique issued after the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM), the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to boosting regional energy interconnectivity, including accelerating the development of the power grid, the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline, the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement and carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) efforts. The ministers welcomed plans to sign an enhanced memorandum of understanding on the ASEAN Power Grid and endorse a new framework for subsea power cable development within the year. The statement also highlighted progress made on the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project and acknowledged ongoing talks on the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines integration project. Singapore unveils upgraded Stars package to fast-track Timor-Leste's Asean membership
SINGAPORE, July 14 — Singapore on Monday launched the enhanced Singapore–Timor-Leste Asean Readiness Support (Stars) package to support the country's integration into the regional bloc and its long-term development. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the enhanced package will include tailored support to facilitate Timor-Leste's accession to key Asean agreements, specialised training in areas aligned with the country's national priorities, and leadership development programmes and scholarships for the next generation of leaders. 'Timor-Leste's upcoming accession to Asean is a significant milestone, both for your country and for Asean. 'Singapore looks forward to welcoming you warmly to the Asean family, and we will continue to stand with you on this journey,' Wong said at the official lunch he hosted in honour of Timor-Leste's Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao on Monday. Wong said Singapore launched Stars in 2002, a specially customised package to empower Timorese officials with the knowledge and skills needed for Asean membership. According to Singapore's Foreign Ministry, over 1,100 Timorese officials have, to date, participated in courses under the Singapore Cooperation Programme and the Stars package. Gusmao arrived in Singapore on Sunday for his second official visit to the city-state, which continues until Wednesday.
