Three students, van driver injured in Johor crash with cement lorry
Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department Operations Commander, Senior Fire Officer II KUP Muhamad Azizi Zakaria, in a statement, said the 32-year-old lorry driver and 19 other children in the van were reported to be safe.
He said the department received an emergency call regarding the incident at about 1.10pm, before a 'Fire Rescue Tender' and Emergency Medical Services (EMRS) Unit with a strength of 10 members were rushed to the scene.
'Upon arrival, the team found that there were 24 victims involved, with a male student and two female students injured. Also injured was the 45-year-old female van driver,' he said.
He said the team extricated the trapped victims from the wreckage using special equipment, and all the injured were sent to the Sultan Ismail Hospital by ambulance for further treatment. — Bernama

A brief altercation ensued but was swiftly brought under control by a passing Road Transport Department (RTD) officer,' the company said. The bus captain has since undergone a counselling session aimed at improving the handling of such situations, Rapid KL added. All drivers have also been reminded to maintain courteous behaviour and adhere to strict safety protocols at all times. The company advised the public to stay alert and follow traffic rules to avoid incidents, and reminded cyclists to ride in single file and avoid entering vehicle lanes or obstructing traffic.

Cops arrest father and son for alleged murder of e-hailing driver in Ampang after post-mortem reveals foul play
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — A man and his father have been arrested over the murder of a 37-year-old e-hailing driver, whose body was found in Taman Pandan Perdana, Ampang, on June 22. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said police initially classified the case as sudden death after receiving a call from a medical assistant at Hospital Kuala Lumpur at 7.16pm that evening. Police later confirmed the death at the scene, but a post-mortem at Ampang Hospital revealed necrotising soft tissue infections caused by skin and skeletal injuries, indicating foul play. The victim's body was discovered inside the home of one of the suspects, and the case was reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. According to The Star and New Straits Times, the 36-year-old suspect is the victim's best friend, and was arrested along with his 73-year-old father. 'We believe unpaid debts led to the murder,' Azam said, adding that police seized a bamboo cane and pliers believed to be linked to the case. The arrests took place between June 26 and 28, and both suspects tested negative for drugs and have no prior criminal records. The younger suspect has been remanded for 14 days from June 27 to July 10, while his father is remanded for 13 days from June 29 to July 11. Those convicted under Section 302 face the death penalty or up to 40 years in prison with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

SINGAPORE, July 8 — Singapore-based Malaysian billionaire hotelier and property tycoon Ong Beng Seng will return to court on July 23 for a pre-trial conference, as proceedings in his high-profile graft case continue. The Straits Times reported that the session follows a hearing on July 8, which was adjourned to allow parties to file revised submissions. No further details were disclosed. Ong, 79, had previously been scheduled to plead guilty on July 3. However, the hearing was postponed the day before, with the prosecution and defence indicating that they needed more time to finalise their sentencing submissions. The tycoon, best known for bringing Formula One to Singapore in 2008, had initially been slated to plead guilty on April 2. That date was also pushed back at the request of his lawyers, who cited the need to obtain his medical reports. Ong was charged in October 2024 with abetting a public servant in obtaining gifts and with abetment of obstruction of justice. The charges stem from dealings with then-transport minister S. Iswaran, who was sentenced to 12 months' jail in October 2024 after pleading guilty to corruption offences. According to court documents, Ong allegedly arranged for Iswaran to travel on his private jet from Singapore to Doha in December 2022. The flight, valued at around S$10,400 (RM35,000), was followed by a one-night stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Doha worth over S$4,700 and a business-class return flight estimated at S$5,700. The businessman is also accused of informing Iswaran that the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau had obtained the flight manifest for that trip. Iswaran subsequently requested to be billed for the private flight to minimise suspicion, according to the court documents. Ong's case remains under the spotlight due to his longstanding ties with Singapore's Formula One project. He was instrumental in securing the city-state's debut on the F1 calendar in 2008, working closely with Iswaran, who chaired the F1 steering committee and led negotiations on the Government's behalf. The upcoming hearing on July 23 is expected to determine the next steps in the ongoing legal process.
