Marcos leads inauguration of valor clinic in Batangas
The said facility is situated in the Fernando Air Base. Marcos visited the area together with Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr.
The Valor Clinic is a project initiated by the Veterans Memorial Medical Center to extend its services to the different areas across the country, including those outside the National Capital Region.
Through this initiative, more veterans and the dependents will be able to avail the medical services that they deserve. This will also decongest the number of patients being seen in their main hospital.
The medical facility will provide out-patient based services manned by the personnel and staff of the VMMC.
It will offer basic consultation, diagnostic examinations, as well as pharmacy services. The facility features patient waiting area, outpatient consultation rooms, pharmacy unit, blood extraction area, staff pantry and support area, and dedicated teleconsultation facility. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

SONA 2025: Marcos urges healthier lifestyles, 'car-free' Sundays
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Monday expressed concern over the growing number of overweight Filipino adults, calling for a nationwide shift to healthier, more active lifestyles through accessible community-based fitness initiatives. Speaking before Congress during his fourth 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA), Marcos said, "Nakikita natin ang sobrang pagtaas ng timbang ng ating mga kababayang edad dalawampu at pataas. Kaya sikapin nating maging mas aktibo ang ating pamumuhay araw-araw." (We are seeing an excessive rise in the weight of our countrymen aged 20 and above. That's why we must strive to live more active lifestyles every day.) In May last year, the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) reported a significant increase in overweight and obesity prevalence among Filipino adolescents, from 11.6% in 2018 to 13% in 2021. Obesity is not an issue facing the Philippines alone. According to research published in The Lancet, rates of obesity and overweight are spiraling due to a "monumental societal failure" to tackle the problem. More than half of adults and almost a third of children and young people set to be affected by 2050, the study found. Marcos encouraged local government units (LGUs) to organize sports activities such as local leagues, fun runs, and group fitness events like Zumba and aerobics. He also urged cities and municipalities to open public parks and plazas, and make them inviting spaces for physical activity. "Ipalaganap natin ang pagsasagawa ng mga palaro at mga paliga, mga fun runs at fun walks, pati na mga pa-aerobics at pa-Zumba," he said. (Let's encourage organizing sports fests and tournaments, fun runs and fun walks, and even aerobics and Zumba sessions.) "Para sa mga LGU (local government units), buksan at gawing maaliwalas ang mga park at mga plaza, kung saan makakapag-ensayo ang ating mga mamamayan, bata man o matanda," he added. (To our LGUs, open and brighten up our parks and plazas so people of all ages can use them to exercise.) Walkable cities Marcos also promoted the expansion of "Car-Free Sundays" across the country, citing its current implementation in cities such as Metro Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao. The vision for these weekly initiatives converts major roads into walkable, bike-friendly spaces, encouraging outdoor movement and reducing pollution. "Magpatupad tayo ng mga 'Car-Free Sundays', tulad ng ginagawa sa ilang lungsod dito sa Metro Manila, sa Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, at Davao," he said. (Let's implement Car-Free Sundays, like what's already being done in some cities in Metro Manila, Baguio, Cebu, Iloilo, and Davao.) PSC facilities As additional support, Marcos said the Philippine Sports Commission will now open its facilities to the public for free. "Simula ngayon, bubuksan ng Philippine Sports Commission sa publiko ang kanilang mga track and field oval sa Pasig, Maynila, at Baguio, upang makapag-jogging na kayo nang libre," he said. (Starting today, the Philippine Sports Commission will open its track and field ovals in Pasig, Manila, and Baguio to the public for free jogging.) The President's push for public fitness is part of a broader strategy to combat preventable health conditions and strengthen the country's overall well-being, following recent efforts to improve nutrition among children and access to free medical services. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Marcos touts ‘zero-balance billing' at DOH hospitals
Patients no longer have to settle their balance when seeking treatment at Department of Health (DOH) hospitals, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said Monday. In his fourth State of the Nation Address, Marcos announced that the government will cover all expenses incurred by Filipinos at DOH hospitals. 'Itinuloy na po natin ang zero-balance billing. Libre po. Ibig sabihin, ang serbisyo sa basic accommodation sa ating mga DOH hospital, wala nang babayaran ang pasyente dahil bayad na ang bill ninyo,' he said. 'Uulitin ko, wala nang kailangan bayaran ang pasyente basta sa DOH hospital dahil bayad na po ang bill ninyo,' he added. (We will continue zero-balance billing. It's free. This means, for the services in the basic accommodation in our DOH hospitals, no payment is necessary because your bills have already been paid. I repeat, a patient will no longer have to make payments if they're in a DOH hospital because your bill will have already been paid.) Earlier, the President said that he aspired to ease the burden of Filipino patients when it comes to out-of-pocket medical expenses. Marcos said he had already been working with the Department of Health in terms of budget and overall improvements in the Philippine healthcare system. — BM, GMA Integrated News

Marcos orders hiring of more school counselors to address bullying, mental health
'Maraming mag-aaral ang nakakaranas ng bullying o kaya'y depresyon. Binabantayan natin ang mental health ng ating kabataan,' President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said during his fourth SONA on July 28, 2025. President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has directed the hiring of more school counselors in public schools, citing rising cases of bullying and mental health challenges among learners during his fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday. Calling attention to the emotional toll many students continue to face, Marcos said the government must prioritize the mental well-being of young Filipinos alongside traditional academic interventions. Th Department of Education had earlier acknowledged the lack of school counselors to support students' wellbeing. 'Maraming mag-aaral ang nakakaranas ng bullying o kaya'y depresyon. Binabantayan natin ang mental health ng ating kabataan,' the President said. (Many students are experiencing bullying or depression. We are closely monitoring the mental health of our youth.) To address this, Marcos said the Department of Education (DepEd) will increase the number of school counselors to serve as support systems and first responders for students in distress. Expanding mental health access The president also announced the rollout of the YAKAP Caravan, a new nationwide initiative that provides free medical checkups, cancer screenings, and essential medicines for both learners and teachers. While primarily focused on physical health, the YAKAP program is expected to open more touchpoints for early detection of psychological stress, anxiety, and depression among students, especially in underserved communities. "Naglaan tayo ng isang bilyon para makapagtayo ng mahigit tatlong daang Barangay Child Development Centers at Bulilit Centers sa buong bansa. Lalo na sa mga higit na nangangailangang pook. At pauna lamang 'yan. Unti-unti nating tutugunan ang matinding kakulangan sa daycare centers na nabinbin mula pa noong 1990," he said. With this, education and health agencies are expected to work together to integrate mental wellness assessments into school-based health programs. Advocates have long pushed for stronger mental health support in schools—especially following the COVID-19 pandemic, which deepened isolation, academic pressure, and emotional strain among students. Despite the passage of the Mental Health Act in 2018, implementation in basic education has lagged, due largely to the shortage of licensed guidance counselors. As of latest DepEd data, thousands of schools still share a single counselor—if they have one at all. Marcos' call signals renewed urgency to address this gap and comes amid growing public concern over student suicides, school-based violence, and online harassment. 'Ang pinakamahalaga sa sistema ng edukasyon ay ang ating mga mahal na guro,' Marcos added, emphasizing the need to support both students and teachers. (The most important part of the education system is our beloved teachers.) The administration has yet to disclose how many new counselor positions will be created or when hiring will begin. However, education stakeholders say Marcos' pronouncements mark a long-overdue shift in national policy, placing mental health at the core of education reform. — BM, GMA Integrated News
