
Clarks stayed loss-making in 2024 year of transition, but made big changes to drive growth
APAC saw increasing consumer demand across DTC channels with the performance trending up in Q2 from full-price stores in particular and the stores traded positively across all markets. This was driven by strong average selling prices and increased football during key holidays. To capitalise on increased demand for Clarks Originals in the region, new doors were opened in China and Hong Kong after the success of the premium Clarks Original concept that first opened in Japan in 2023.
The company also developed product specifically for China with the first product successfully launched last year.
Changes at the company itself included CEO John Ram leaving in April 2024 and an interim executive committee formed reporting to the board. It also reorganised its global leadership team to simplify its structure and centralise costs. And it focused heavily on cost savings.
Those savings included reduced headcount across all functions, relocating finance, costings and IT support teams to the lower-cost location of Malaysia. It consolidated warehouse operations in Europe by closing its EU distribution centre and servicing the market from its own warehouse in Street, Somerset. And it closed its Singapore office and moved the Southeast Asia team to Malaysia.
The product assortment was repositioned too and it looked at pricing in order to become 'a better-value proposition' in each market as well as rolling out an essentials range in the UK 'to serve price-conscious customers'. That also came with a change in marketing approach to drive traffic to stores and online, as well as reinforcing key brand values of comfort and fit.
To kick-start future growth the company is focusing on profitable market share growth in its mature markets of the UK, the US and EU but will build scale with 'aggressive' growth rates in its less established markets. It will invest in key growth opportunities and is building and sourcing 'appropriate' assortments per market with, as mentioned, suitable pricing for the consumer.

Lisbon launches citywide reusable cup scheme to cut plastic waste
Every night, around 25,000 cups are used in Lisbon's entertainment areas. Although many cups are sold as "reusable", until now there was no system in place to ensure the effective collection, cleaning and recirculation of these containers. Through a new citywide reusable cup system, supported by a local deposit and return model, Lisbon has become the first European capital to implement an initiative that aims to combat plastic waste, reduce emissions and introduce a smart reuse model in the city's restaurant sector and bustling nightlife. The first return points operated by TOMRA have been in operation in two of the city's historic kiosks since 27 June. One in Praça de São Paulo and the other in Praça do Príncipe Real. Consumers receive their drinks in reusable cups upon payment of a deposit. This is fully refunded upon return, simply by touching their card or mobile phone to the collection point. Full implementation of the reusable cup system is scheduled for October 2025. The innovative partnership was made between the Lisbon City Council, TOMRA and the Association of Hotels, Restaurants and Similar Services of Portugal (AHRESP). Policy with infrastructure The implementation of the system follows Lisbon City Council's 2024 regulation banning the use of disposable plastic cups - a bold measure that requires a robust infrastructure. With TOMRA's scalable technology and strong local buy-in, the city is aiming to make real progress on plastic waste. "Lisbon is committed to leading by example, promoting sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics and involving partners in a real change towards more conscious consumption habits," says Rui Cordeiro, Lisbon City Council's councillor for Waste and Circular Economy. "This is a concrete step towards building a culture of reuse in our city and inspiring other municipalities to follow suit." The participation of the catering sector is crucial to the system's success. AHRESP, Portugal's largest hotel and catering association, is supporting cafés, bars and nightclubs in integrating with this new reuse model. "This initiative represents a necessary change for the HORECA (hotel, restaurant, and café)sector, which is now playing an active and central role in the transition to a more circular economy," says Carlos Moura, chairman of the board of AHRESP. "The establishments gain not only a practical solution to respond to the new regulations, but also an opportunity to lead, with consumers, a sustainable and positive change of habits for the city of Lisbon." Live demonstration at MUDE The system was presented during the "Lisbon to Reuse" summit at the Museum of Design and Fashion (MUDE). Participants - including policy-makers, urban planners and environmental leaders - were able to experience how the system works, including the TOMRA return point and the reimbursement process. How does it work? Consumers receive drinks in reusable cups for a refundable deposit of €0.60. The cups can then be returned at TOMRA collection machines throughout the city. No registration is required - simply tap a card or mobile phone with contactless technology to receive the refund. TOMRA manages the logistics, sanitisation and redistribution of the cups, ensuring a continuous and efficient cycle By October, the city will introduce a standardised "Lisbon cup" for all participating bars and establishments in the central neighbourhoods, with 17 return points planned for the Baixa area.

Greek farm fund scandal to impact discharge of Commission's budget
A scandal involving Greek use of EU agricultural funds is set to play a role in the EU Parliament's discharge of the Commission budget later this year, the co-chair of the European Parliament's Intergroup on Anti-Corruption has told Euronews. German Green MEP Daniel Freund was commenting on the "fake farmer" fraud scandal, a sprawling case that has triggered political turmoil in Greece and raised questions over the management of EU agricultural subsidies. The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) announced in May that it has an ongoing investigation into an alleged organised fraud scheme involving agricultural funds and corruption involving public officials of the Greek Payment and Control Agency for Guidance and Guarantee Community Aids (OPEKEPE). Five high-ranking Greek government officials, including a minister and three deputies, resigned on Friday following allegations of involvement in the case, which stems from the alleged mismanagement of EU subsidies for agriculture between 2019 and 2022 by OPEKEPE, a government agency tasked with handling the funds. According to the EPPO, a "significant number of individuals" received subsidies through the agency based on false declarations, including claims of owning or leasing pastures that were in fact public land. 'In September 2024, Greek authorities placed OPEKEPE's accreditation on probation, and an action plan was designed to address the deficiencies identified,' a European Commission spokesperson told Euronews, adding: 'The Commission is working closely with the Greek authorities in this context.' Freund called on the European Parliament's budget control committee to investigate whether the alleged fraud points to deeper structural issues in Greece's management of EU funds. 'This issue will for sure play a role into the discussion on the discharge of the Commission's budget after the summer,' he said. The Commission said it could not comment on ongoing EPPO criminal investigations or criminal trials. Under EU law, member states must accredit only those paying agencies that meet minimum standards for managing EU funds, and if an agency fails to meet these conditions, it must be placed under probation and eventually stripped of its accreditation. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has publicly acknowledged the scandal as 'evidence of the state's inadequacy' in addressing corruption, pledging to establish a special taskforce to conduct a swift and thorough investigation. 'Clientelism cannot govern the way we conduct business,' he told his cabinet, vowing that 'since OPEKEPE didn't manage to do its work, the state will do it centrally.' In June the Athens-based EPPO referred to the Hellenic Parliament information regarding the alleged involvement of two former Ministers of Rural Development and Food in criminal offences. The Greek Constitution provides that only the national Parliament has the power to investigate and prosecute serving or even former members of the Greek government. This legal limitation has forced EPPO to split its investigation, a move the office argues undermines its mandate under EU law. EPPO has reported this issue to the European Commission, suggesting that national legal protections for ministers could limit the EPPO's competence and therefore be in breach of the EU's prosecutorial framework. Former agriculture minister Makis Voridis, who was serving as migration minister until recently, was one of those who resigned last week. 'I hope that the Greek Parliament lifts the immunities of MPs involved, in order to allow a proper investigation,' Freund said.

Poll suggest Europeans want tougher Big Tech EU enforcement
The majority of French, Spanish, and German citizens want stricter EU enforcement of Big Tech, according to a new YouGov survey. Almost two-thirds in France (63%), 59% in Germany, and 49% in Spain said EU enforcement of laws addressing Big Tech's influence and power is too relaxed, when asked to choose between too relaxed, too strict, or about right. Only 7% of respondents in France, 8% in Germany, and 9% in Spain felt the enforcement was too strict. The survey, commissioned by two NGOs—People vs Big Tech and WeMove Europe—follows the EU's 2022 adoption of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA), aimed at regulating tech giants' impact on users and the marketplace. Both regulations are caught up in the trade dispute between the EU and the US, in which the US has described the DSA and DMA as unjustified non-tariff barriers. EU Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera told Euronews last week that the EU would not give in to US pressure on the issue. 'We are going to defend our sovereignty,' Ribera said, adding: 'We will defend the way we implement our rules, we will defend a well functioning market and we will not allow anyone to tell us what to do.' Surprisingly, the survey results also show that the survey participants believed Big Tech holds more power than the EU itself. Half of French respondents (50%), 48% in Germany, and a majority in Spain (55%) believe that Big Tech companies are 'more powerful' or 'slightly more powerful' than the EU. In contrast, only 9% in France, 12% in Germany, and 15% in Spain think tech giants are 'slightly less powerful' or 'much less powerful.' The survey was conducted on a sample of 2,070 respondents in France, 2,323 in Germany, and 2,077 in Spain.
