Oman tackles human trafficking with effective legislation
Brig Jamal bin Habib al Quraishi, Director General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation, said Oman has made progress in enhancing its legislative and institutional framework to tackle trafficking. 'This year's commemoration reflects the sultanate's strides in combating human trafficking by updating legislation, improving inter-agency coordination, and equipping officers with the tools and training needed to address these crimes professionally,' he stated.
In conjunction with the international day, the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking launched a campaign called 'Aman' to raise public awareness, encourage reporting and inform victims of their rights. ROP has rolled out a new system to better identify and protect trafficking victims. It includes enhanced coordination with Public Prosecution and Ministry of Social Development to ensure victims are referred to official protection centres. Personnel across agencies have been trained to recognise indications of trafficking, enabling quicker legal action and appropriate care.
Brig Quraishi revealed that several cases investigated this year exposed organised criminal networks operating across borders. In one instance, individuals of Arab and Asian nationalities entered Oman on tourist visas and were found promoting illegal organ transplantation abroad. The operation targeted vulnerable patients in need of kidney transplants.
He added that perpetrators also use fraudulent job advertisements to lure women abroad, only to exploit them in Oman. Confiscation of personal documents and forced work under threat are among the tactics employed.
Other cases involved workers being brought in on tourist or visit visas, only to be illegally employed and pressured into paying off visa-related debts by working endless hours.
A high-profile arrest this year involved a suspect wanted by Italian authorities for leading a trafficking and migrant smuggling ring to Europe. The individual was apprehended in Oman and extradited following international protocols. The operation earned recognition from law enforcement partners abroad.

Muscat: Five citizens were arrested for defrauding and extorting a citizen by the South Al Batinah Governorate Royal Oman Police Command said on Friday. The Royal Oman Police further said that the suspects contacted the victim posing as a woman through social media platforms. They then persuaded the victim to travel to Barka and kidnapping and detaining him in a deserted house and extorting money from him. ‘Aman' campaign to raise awareness in Oman on human trafficking
Muscat – The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) has launched a national awareness campaign called 'Aman' coinciding with World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, as part of its intensified efforts to combat human trafficking. The three-month campaign aims to raise public awareness, improve prevention efforts, support victims, and enhance cooperation at both national and international levels. The campaign was launched on Wednesday under the patronage of H E Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Undersecretary for Political Affairs in Foreign Ministry and Chairman of NCCHT. Speaking on behalf of the committee, Dr Ahmed bin Taleb al Jabri, Assistant Public Prosecutor and Vice-Chairman of NCCHT, said Aman represents a step forward in the country's integrated national response to human trafficking. He described the campaign as a call to conscience and a reflection of Oman's firm commitment to protecting human rights in accordance with national legislation and international conventions. Dr Ahmed bin Taleb al Jabri, Assistant Public Prosecutor and Vice-Chairman of NCCHT Jabri added that this year marks a turning point in Oman's efforts, citing intensified investigations, judicial proceedings and announcement of several arrests and convictions related to trafficking. He noted that Oman is preparing to update legislation to better align with evolving legal frameworks in this field. At the campaign launch, Major Khalid bin Ali Tabuk, Assistant Director of Department of Combating Human Trafficking at Royal Oman Police, presented an overview of the national legal and institutional framework. He highlighted ROP's role in early detection of victims, case management and the mechanisms in place for reporting trafficking incidents. The launch event was attended by members of NCCHT, foreign diplomats and officials from relevant government entities.

The National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) has launched a three-month awareness campaign (Aman) to raise community awareness of the dangers of this crime, promote a culture of prevention, support and empower victims, and consolidate aspects of local and international institutional cooperation in combating this crime. The commemoration of this day comes within the framework of ongoing national efforts to combat human trafficking, which align with the pillars of Oman Vision 2040, particularly about the human and community axis, by consolidating the values of justice and fairness, strengthening the social protection system, and enshrining the principles of the rule of law. The launch was held in the presence of Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking. In his speech on behalf of the National Committee, Dr. Ahmed bin Taleb Al Jabri, Assistant Public Prosecutor and Deputy Chairman of the National Committee, emphasized that the campaign is not merely limited to media, but rather a sincere call to protecting human beings and their rights as per n international and national protocals.
