Kerala Health Minister Veena George chairs review meeting on prevention of Nipah virus, says 461 people in Nipah contact list
Health Minister Veena George on Monday said, 'There are currently 461 people in the Nipah contact list in the state. Out of these, 252 are from the Malappuram district and 209 are from the Palakkad district. 27 people are on the high-risk list. They are undergoing treatment in Malappuram, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Ernakulam districts.'
The minister added, 'Out of 48 people in the contact list, 46 have tested negative. Out of these, 23 are in Manjeri Medical College and 23 in Kozhikode.'
She added that the people on the high-risk list are in quarantine, and all persons on the list have been found.
'It has been ensured that all the people on the high-risk list remain in quarantine. No person in the contact list is left unaccounted for. Police help has been sought for this,' Veena George added.
Earlier on July 4, the health authorities in Kerala issued an alert after two suspected cases of Nipah were found in the state.
Veena George said that the suspected cases of the Nipah virus are from the Palakkad and Malappuram districts. 'An alert has been issued in three districts of Kerala, namely Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad, in connection with two new Nipah virus cases,' she said.
According to official sources, the positive case is that of Bishara Nehrin, an 18-year-old female resident of Mallapuram District. The place of residence is rural, with a nearby forested area and fruit orchards reportedly frequented by Fruit bats. The patient succumbed to the illness on July 1, 2025.
'The post-mortem samples (Serum, CSF, NPS & lung tissue) were sent to Regional VRDL in GMC, Kozhikode on 2nd July and were reported positive by RT-PCR,' they added.
Regarding the other case, sources stated that Hasanath, a 38-year-old female resident of the Pallakad district.
'The patient is presently admitted to a private hospital in Mallapuram and is on ventilatory support. The samples sent to NIV Pune on 4th July 2025 were confirmed to be positive for NiVD Public Health Response,' sources told ANI.
The official sources further said that more than 300 contacts have been identified thus far in 3 districts: Pallakad, Mallapuram and Kozhikode. (ANI)

Earlier, under the leadership of CM Dhami and Health Minister Dhan Singh Rawat, the Health Department has prepared a strict and dedicated action plan to provide pure and safe food to lakhs of devotees during the upcoming Kanwar Yatra, a statement said. Special teams of food safety officers have been deployed in Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri and Uttarkashi districts. These teams will regularly take samples of milk, sweets, oil, spices, beverages, etc., from the pandals and send them to laboratories for testing. If any sample does not meet the standards, the concerned place will be closed immediately, the statement said. The Yatra is scheduled to get underway on July 10. In the Kanwar Yatra procession, Kanwariyas collect water from a river and carry it hundreds of kilometres to offer it to the shrines of Lord Shiva. 485 people are currently on Nipah virus contact list in Kerala, says Health Minister Veena George
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 8 (ANI): Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday informed that a total of 485 people are currently on the Nipah virus contact list in Kerala as containment measures intensify across districts, according to the official statement. According to the Health Department, Malappuram district has 192 contacts under observation, followed by Palakkad with 176, Kozhikode with 114, Ernakulam with 2, and Kannur with 1. In Malappuram, 18 people are receiving treatment, with one patient in ICU care. So far, 42 samples from the district have tested negative for Nipah virus. In Palakkad, 3 individuals remain in isolation, with 7 samples confirmed negative to date, as per the release. In a statement, Statewide, 26 individuals have been classified as highest risk, while 117 are in the high-risk category and are under strict monitoring. The confirmed Nipah patient from Palakkad continues to undergo treatment in the ICU in Kozhikode. A high-level meeting was held to assess the situation, attended by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, the NHM State Mission Director, the Directors of Health Services and Medical Education, Additional Directors, District Collectors, District Medical Officers, and senior officials from various departments. Punjab launches 'Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana' for free treatment up to 10 lakh annually
Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], July 8 (ANI): The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government on Tuesday launched the 'Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana', a major healthcare initiative that promised free and cashless medical treatment up to Rs 10 lakh per year for every eligible resident of the state. The scheme was formally launched by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal at a public event in Chandigarh. Addressing the gathering, CM Mann said, 'Today I launched the 'Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana' with National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal ji in Chandigarh. Under this scheme, people will get free and best treatment up to Rs 10 lakh every year.' The scheme aimed to benefit around 3 crore people across Punjab, covering permanent residents, including government employees and pensioners. According to the government, MMSY health cards would be issued to all eligible citizens, and treatment would be available free of cost in both government and private hospitals empanelled under the scheme. CM Mann further added, ''Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana' will cover around 3 crore population of Punjab. MMSY health cards will be issued to permanent residents of the state including government employees and pensioners. Free and cashless treatment will be provided in all government and private hospitals through this card.'
