Andi, 44, the Tanjung Batu assemblyman and assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship, and Dr Yusof, 69, the Sindumin Assemblyman, along with businessman Datuk Tei Jiann Cheing, 37, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga. According to the charges, Andi and Yusof allegedly received bribes from Tei as inducement to facilitate applications by two companies, Syarikat Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Sinaran Hayat Sdn Bhd, owned by Tei's business partners, for mineral exploration licences in Sabah. Tei faces two charges for allegedly offering the bribes to the two assemblymen for the same purpose. Territorial Army soldier jailed, fined for drink driving
TAWAU: A Territorial Army soldier was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined RM10,000 by the magistrate's court here today after pleading guilty to a drink driving offence committed last year. Davyson Nyanggau Lawai, 36, was initially charged under Section 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Amendment 2020) for driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol level above the permitted limit. The original charge carries a sentence of seven to 10 years' imprisonment, a fine ranging from RM50,000 to RM100,000, and a 10-year driving licence suspension upon conviction. However, his lawyer submitted a representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers requesting a plea bargain. The prosecution accepted the proposal and reduced the charge to Section 45A(1) of the same act. Davyson then pleaded guilty before magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum. The amended charge carries a maximum penalty of two years' imprisonment and a fine of between RM10,000 and RM30,000. According to court documents, the accused, a corporal with the Territorial Army stationed at the Kukusan Camp was driving a Perodua Bezza when he was found to have a blood alcohol concentration of 372mg per 100ml, far exceeding the legal limit of 50mg per 100ml. The incident occurred about 10.45pm on April 25, last year, along Jalan Utara Simpang. The offence also led to a road accident that injured a 27-year-old male motorcyclist. The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Shearil Aizad Murnizam, while the accused was represented by Jhesseny P. Kang.

Man gets 30 years' jail, 13 strokes of rotan for raping daughter
TEMERLOH: A man was sentenced to 30 years in prison and 13 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here today for raping and molesting his then 10-year-old daughter three years ago. The 54-year-old was ordered to serve 20 years in prison and to be given 10 strokes of the cane for rape and another 10 years and three strokes for physical sexual abuse. However, judge Jamaludin Mat ordered the prison sentences be served concurrently from the date the accused was arrested on Sept 12, 2022. For the first offence, the accused was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for raping his daughter, who was then aged 10 years and 3 months, at a residence in Kampung Lubuk Paku, Maran, in mid-March 2022. The section carries a manimum prison sentence of 30 years and up to 10 strokes of the cane. For the second offence, he was charged with committing physical sexual abuse against his child in the same place about 8pm on Aug 8, 2022. The charge, under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, carries a maximum jail sentence of 20 years and whipping. Prior to sentencing, deputy public prosecutor Khairunnisa Zaffar urged the court to mete out the maximum sentence, citing the severity of the crime. The accused was represented by Khairul Anuar Abu Hasan Ashari and Ahmad Zahid Abu Hashim.

Former surveyor charged with abusing position for RM150k contract
KUALA TERENGGANU: A former quantity surveyor at the Dungun Municipal Council was charged today in the Sessions Court for allegedly abusing his position to secure a RM150,000 contract for his parents' company. Mohammad Hanif Ahmad, 41, denied the charge under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum 20-year jail term and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The offence was linked to a 2019 animal shelter project in Taman Rimba, Bandar Bukit Bauk. Judge Mohd Azhar Othman granted bail at RM6,000 with conditions, including monthly MACC reporting and passport surrender. The case will next be mentioned on July 29 for document submission.
