Mumbai: Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik discharged from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital

Expressing gratitude following his discharge, Patnaik took to the social media platform X and wrote, 'I would like to thank the entire medical team of @KDAHMumbai and GangaWebteam for providing excellent medical service and taking great care of me pre-surgery and post-surgery. Heartfelt thanks to everyone from #Odisha and outside for their wishes and prayers for my health. Jai Jagannatha.'
Speaking in Bhubaneswar, BJD Vice-President Debi Prasad Mishra told ANI that Patnaik had travelled to Mumbai on June 20 for the medical procedure.
'People of Odisha are very glad to know that their beloved leader, Naveen ji has come out of Ambani hospital (Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital) in Mumbai. He had been to Mumbai on 20th June for the surgery...Now, he has come out of the hospital,' he said.
BJD's Mishra further added,' People are very eager to see him in Odisha at Naveen Niwas...This is a very successful operation. He has been discharged from the hospital and will remain in Mumbai for a few days for physiotherapy and other necessary treatments, as advised by the doctors. He will come back soon, hopefully...'
Meanwhile, on July 3, as the state climbed to fifth place in the national school education rankings for 2023-24, the former CM expressed his happiness on social media, crediting the 5T initiative for the transformation.
The previous Biju Janata Dal government had transformed about 7000 schools to unleash new aspirations and open new horizons for school students.
In a post on X, former CM Naveen Patnaik shared, 'Glad to share that Odisha has earned 5th rank nationally in School Grading System, as per Performance Grading Index (PGI-2.0) Report released by Government of India. Odisha has achieved score of 595.6 and secured PRACHESTA-3 grade for the academic year 2023-24, up from 14th in 2019. The PGI 2.0 evaluates school education through 73 indicators across two categories: Outcomes and Governance & Management.'

1 dead, 1 injured after a massive rockfall in Pathanamthitta district
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India] July 8, (ANI): One worker has died and another worker is reported missing after a massive rockfall at a quarry in Payyanamon near Konni, Pathanamthitta district, on Monday. The search for the missing worker is ongoing. Two workers, one from Odisha and the other from Bihar, were operating an excavator when a huge rock fell on top of it on Monday. The Fire Force and NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) resumed search operations on Tuesday morning. By the end of Monday, the search operations were stopped owing to adverse weather conditions and another rockfall. Labour Minister V Sivankutty expressed deep sorrow over the death of a worker. The minister's statement said,' The search for one person is ongoing. Additional Labour Commissioner K Sreelal has been instructed to investigate the incident and submit a report. The family of the deceased worker will be provided compensation under the Employees' Compensation Act. The Labour Department will also take steps to repatriate the body.' In a similar incident reported from Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur on Tuesday, a wall collapsed at a local eatery near Bageshwar Dham in Gadha village, leading to the death of at least one person. This incident occurred following heavy rainfall in the area. Speaking to CMHO (Chief Medical and Health Officer), Chhatarpur RP Gupta, he said, 'We have received one body and 10 injured persons at the hospital. This morning, due to heavy rainfall, a wall collapsed at Sharma Dhaba in Bageshwar Dham. Some devotees were injured in this incident and were brought to the hospital, where they are receiving treatment. Our medical team is present here, and all the injured have received first aid following a preliminary diagnosis. Further tests are being conducted on the serious patients, our doctors are treating them and will be referred further if needed,' the CMHO added. Earlier, on July 5, a culvert on a state highway connecting Narsinghpur to Narmadapuram had collapsed due to heavy rainfall over the past few days in Narsinghpur, Madhya Pradesh. (ANI)

PGI leads phase 1 clinical trials for indigenous cancer drug development in India
Chandigarh: The PGI is at the forefront of India's efforts to develop indigenous solid tumour cancer drugs, serving as one of the four pivotal Phase 1 Human Clinical Trial Units (CTUs) established by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). This initiative marks a significant leap in fostering innovation and promoting homegrown research in the country's pharmaceutical landscape. The molecule for the cancer drug is undergoing phase 1 clinical trials in PGI. The ICMR's visionary plan to create a nationwide network of CTUs aims to bolster the evaluation of new devices, diagnostics, and drugs in their crucial early phases of development. "PGI has been one of the four such units for phase one clinical trials in the country. For new medicine used in humans for the first time, Phase 1 assesses safety. Earlier, these studies were mainly done by big companies, but now ICMR is supporting indigenous clinical trials," stated Dr. Rajiv Bahl, director of ICMR. The ICMR director informed that phase 1 clinical trials elsewhere in these CTUs are ongoing for the development of Zika virus and antiflu vaccines. Dr. Bahl said, "There are 75 such networks in the country for Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials." PGI boasts a rich history in clinical drug trials, conducting the country's first human study in 2006. This pioneering trial involved an antimalarial drug molecule developed by the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow, with PGI playing a crucial role in developing a joint protocol and taking the research forward. Also, last year the PGI's CTU proposed an 8-bedded facility for the participating volunteers to be enhanced from the existing 4 beds. However, this facility has yet to take off. "One can compete with world-class innovations if there are better facilities for the volunteers who are the backbone of such clinical trials," said an official at the ICMR.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George chairs review meeting on prevention of Nipah virus, says 461 people in Nipah contact list
Malappuram (Kerala) [India], July 8 (ANI): Kerala Health Minister Veena George chaired a review meeting regarding the prevention of the Nipah virus at the Collectorate Conference Hall in Malappuram. There are 461 people in the Nipah contact list, out of which 27 people are at a high risk, Health Minister Veena George said. Health Minister Veena George on Monday said, 'There are currently 461 people in the Nipah contact list in the state. Out of these, 252 are from the Malappuram district and 209 are from the Palakkad district. 27 people are on the high-risk list. They are undergoing treatment in Malappuram, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Ernakulam districts.' The minister added, 'Out of 48 people in the contact list, 46 have tested negative. Out of these, 23 are in Manjeri Medical College and 23 in Kozhikode.' She added that the people on the high-risk list are in quarantine, and all persons on the list have been found. 'It has been ensured that all the people on the high-risk list remain in quarantine. No person in the contact list is left unaccounted for. Police help has been sought for this,' Veena George added. Earlier on July 4, the health authorities in Kerala issued an alert after two suspected cases of Nipah were found in the state. Veena George said that the suspected cases of the Nipah virus are from the Palakkad and Malappuram districts. 'An alert has been issued in three districts of Kerala, namely Kozhikode, Malappuram and Palakkad, in connection with two new Nipah virus cases,' she said. According to official sources, the positive case is that of Bishara Nehrin, an 18-year-old female resident of Mallapuram District. The place of residence is rural, with a nearby forested area and fruit orchards reportedly frequented by Fruit bats. The patient succumbed to the illness on July 1, 2025. 'The post-mortem samples (Serum, CSF, NPS & lung tissue) were sent to Regional VRDL in GMC, Kozhikode on 2nd July and were reported positive by RT-PCR,' they added. Regarding the other case, sources stated that Hasanath, a 38-year-old female resident of the Pallakad district. 'The patient is presently admitted to a private hospital in Mallapuram and is on ventilatory support. The samples sent to NIV Pune on 4th July 2025 were confirmed to be positive for NiVD Public Health Response,' sources told ANI. The official sources further said that more than 300 contacts have been identified thus far in 3 districts: Pallakad, Mallapuram and Kozhikode. (ANI)
