CM announces Secretariat revamp, 50,000 flats for poor
New Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday said the time had come for the Capital to have a new integrated Secretariat to house all government departments under one roof as she launched a month-long cleanliness campaign.
Addressing officials at the Department of Women and Child Development in Kashmere Gate, Ms. Gupta expressed strong displeasure over the dilapidated condition of the building. 'The ceilings are leaking, furniture is broken, cupboards are damaged, and fans are in such poor condition that they could fall at any moment,' she said, questioning how governance could be delivered effectively in such an environment.
'We will take steps in this direction. A suitable location will be identified for the new Delhi Secretariat. Our officials cannot be left to work in such miserable conditions any longer,' Ms. Gupta said.
Housing promise
The CM's remarks came after launching the 'Dilli Ko Koode Se Azadi' (freedom from garbage for Delhi) campaign, which will run from August 1 to 31. It aims at making the city cleaner, greener, and garbage-free, with coordination among multiple agencies and active citizen participation. Ms. Gupta also announced that around 50,000 flats, built more than a decade ago in the outer areas of the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, will be renovated and handed over to slum dwellers.
'The previous governments never bothered to allocate these flats, despite claiming to work for the poor. As a result, the units became uninhabitable over time,' Ms. Gupta said, adding that these flats will now be provided to eligible slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana -Urban.
The CM said departments like the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation had been allocated over ₹700 crore for the project, but the funds went unused and were nearly returned to the Centre. 'The Centre has now approved their use for the renovation of these flats. Our government will ensure rehabilitation of eligible slum dwellers so that they can be participants in Delhi's growth story,' she said.

The motion, tabled on the opening day of the monsoon session, also covered Operation Mahadev and was moved by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief whip Abhay Verma, who lauded the armed forces for striking terrorist hideouts deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites across Pakistan and PoK. Several terrorists were eliminated in precision strikes carried out by Indian armed forces. 'Operation Sindoor was the response to the tears of our sisters and the cries of mothers clinging to their sons' biers,' said Gupta. 'PM Modi protected the dignity and self-respect of all Indian women. But the opposition, driven by selfish motives, continues to drift away from national interest. They are unhappy with India's progress and want to keep the country backward.' The discussion saw frequent disruptions, with BJP and AAP MLAs shouting over each other. Minister Kapil Mishra accused AAP leaders of attempting to block the discussion on the armed forces' bravery. 'Such discussions hurt them,' he said. Minister Ashish Sood called the government's strong response to cross-border terrorism the 'new normal'. 'Raising questions about our forces avenging the point-blank shooting of tourists should be treated as sedition,' he said. AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha said terrorists were trying to divide the country along religious lines and alleged that some domestic elements were doing the same. His remarks drew strong objections from BJP members, and the Speaker ordered that they be expunged from the House records. The exchange escalated and Jha was marshalled out of the House. 'I was expelled for asking a question. Today, you may have thrown me out, but how will you silence the 140 crore people of this country and their questions?' Jha told reporters outside the Assembly. BJP MLA Shikha Roy demanded that Operation Sindoor be included in the Delhi government school curriculum. Congress leader Arvinder Singh Lovely said every Indian should be proud of the operation. 'Everyone should stand with the country on Operation Sindoor,' he said. Leader of Opposition Atishi also praised the armed forces but accused the Modi government of backing down under international pressure. 'Our armed forces had the upper hand. One base after another was being destroyed. We were close to eliminating state-sponsored terrorism in Pakistan,' she said. 'But then US President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. PM Modi backed off because Trump threatened to shut down trade.' Atishi said the Prime Minister failed to stand with the armed forces at a critical moment. 'Was the value of our sisters' sindoor less than the value of trade with America?' she said. 'While the country stood with our forces, PM Modi did not.'

Will take protest to every slum cluster in city: Delhi Congress
In its first major street protest since the BJP formed government in Delhi earlier this year, the Congress Monday accused the Rekha Gupta-led government of forcibly evicting slum dwellers across the city without rehabilitating them. 'The Congress will not allow the BJP to drive the poor out of Delhi. This government's agenda is to remove 'garib, not garibi, (the poor, and not poverty),' said Delhi Congress Chief Devender Yadav, announcing that the party will take its agitation to every JJ cluster in the city. Party leaders invoked the legacy of former CM Sheila Dikshit, claiming theirs was the only party that had made efforts to regularise and resettle slum clusters. 'Congress built in-situ flats in areas like Bhoomiheen Camp and Kathputli Colony. BJP only makes hollow promises,' said former MP Udit Raj. 'What's happening with slum dwellers is no surprise. This is BJP's character,' said former MP and Sheila Dikshit's son Sandeep Dikshit. Amid the demonstration at the Assembly, allegedly held without permission, Delhi Police repeatedly announced that Section 144 was in place and that public gatherings were prohibited. Even as Congress workers continued their demonstration despite warnings, police deployed water cannons and detained at least 36 protesters, including Yadav, who was taken to Subzi Mandi police station. The demonstration was called against the recent demolition in areas such as Jangpura, Kalkaji, Wazirpur and Ashok Vihar. More than 3,000 homes in slums have been demolished and 15,000 families have been rendered homeless over the past five months, without advance notice or alternate housing options, the party alleged. In a symbolic act, party workers brought a paper jhuggi topped with a toy bulldozer, bearing photographs of BJP ministers with the words 'Haye Haye' written below. A poster on a protest truck read: 'Jahan pe kiya jhuggi waalon ko beghar, wahin banao unka ghar (relocate the homeless jhuggi dwellers in the same area)'. Last month, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited the Ashok Vihar slum cluster in Jailorwala Bagh, where hundreds of homes were demolished in June as part of an ongoing anti-encroachment drive. Videos shared by the Congress on social media showed Gandhi walking through the debris, speaking to residents who said they were left homeless.
