Congress devours Mahayuti Govt over serving 'meal in silver plates', asks where is farm loan waiver
The former State Minister also targeted the BJP-led government over 'deteriorating' law and order situation in Maharashtra, and what he called 'internal contradictions' within the ruling coalition which consists of the BJP, the NCP and the Shiv Sena.
Speaking to reporters in Nagpur, Mr. Wadettiwar questioned the government's priorities, stating, 'When the State is virtually on the brink of bankruptcy, what was the need to serve meals in silver plates to members of the Estimate Committees in Mumbai?' He claimed each meal cost ₹5,000 and so much money was spent by the government at a time when farmers are being denied loan waivers, bonuses are not being paid, and large sections of tribal, social welfare, and Anganwadi schemes are allegedly facing budget cuts.
Mumbai hosted a two-day conference of the Estimates Committees of Parliament and States from June 23. The event, held at Vidhan Bhavan (legislative complex) in south Mumbai, saw participation of chairpersons and members of such panels of Parliament, States and Union Territory legislatures.
These financial committees, at the central and State/UT level, examine the expenditure estimates for each administrative department in respective budgets and also utilisation of funds.
'A majority of farmers in Vidarbha have been denied fresh crop loans. Anganwadi workers [who look after child care centres] aren't paid honorarium on time, and funds for schemes like the Sanjay Gandhi Niradhar Yojana remain pending. Yet, the government chooses to serve meals to estimates committee members in silver plates,' Mr. Wadettiwar said.
The Opposition legislator maintained this act was nothing, but an insult to the poor.
His party colleague and Maharashtra Congress president Harshwardhan Sapkal also hit out at the Mahayuti Government over the issue of 'meal in silver plates'.
'They [Estimates Committee delegation members] feasted on ₹5,000 meal served in ₹550 worth of silver plate each. Was the fund spent linked to the money found in the Dhule government guest house when the State Estimates Committee was touring?' the MPCC chief asked in Mumbai.
Last month, a huge amount of cash was recovered from a room in the government guest house in Dhule district ahead of the visit of State Estimates Committee members.
'They have no money for farmers' loan waivers or even ₹2,100 for a poor sister, but they have no shortage of funds for lavish banquets,' Mr. Sapkal remarked.
Citing an incident in Pune, where a BJP office-bearer allegedly molested a policewoman, CLP leader Wadettiwar questioned the Mahayuti Government's moral authority to uphold law and order.
'If even women police personnel are not safe, what does that say about law and order? The Chief Minister [who also holds the home portfolio] is from the BJP. Will women get justice when the BJP men are accused of such acts?' he asked.
Raising concerns over the recently approved Maharashtra Shaktipeeth Expressway, Mr. Wadettiwar pointed to growing opposition among farmers, whose lands are likely to be acquired for the mega project.
'Some Ministers in the Cabinet opposed the project, but that's not enough. If Hasan Mushrif and Prakash Abitkar [both Ministers] truly object to it, they should quit the government. Mere token dissent while clinging to power is hypocrisy,' the former Minister emphasised.
The 802-km-long expressway will link Pavnar in Wardha district (in Vidarbha) with Patradevi in Sindhudurg district on the Maharashtra-Goa border.
The Congress MLA accused the Mahayuti Government of indulging in 'double standards', saying it has no money for the poor, but at the same time the ruling coalition is showing no restraint in spending on political elites.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut, whose party is an ally of the Congress, also hit out at the State Government over the issue of corruption.
'The corruption taking place in Maharashtra cannot be compared to any scam in the world. It is a very high-level scam,' Mr. Raut alleged.

Congress-led govt is bankrupt, says former CM
Bengaluru: BJP Central Parliamentary Board member and former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, alleged that the Congress-led state government has gone 'completely bankrupt' as it does not have enough funds to release for undertaking any development work in the state. Addressing the media at the State BJP Office 'Jagannath Bhavan', in Bengaluru, Yediyurappa said, 'We have repeatedly pointed out that the (Congress) government is bankrupt. No development work is taking place in the state. The government is in no position to release funds for any developmental activities.' He also said that no funds have been released for the Gruha Lakshmi scheme for the past three months. Under the Anna Bhagya scheme, the state government owes around Rs 250 crore in pending payments to lorry owners who transport foodgrains. He urged the state government to immediately call a meeting with G.R. Shanmugappa, President of the Lorry Owners' Association, and take necessary action. He claimed that every programme of the Congress government is merely for publicity, with no sincere attempt to implement them effectively. 'All these facts and documents clearly show that the government is bankrupt,' he said. Yediyurappa demanded that the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and other Ministers acknowledge the ground reality and disclose the true financial status of the state. Meanwhile, State BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra has alleged that the Congress government is sabotaging the Anna Bhagya free rice scheme that was launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah himself. Speaking to the media in Shivamogga on Tuesday, Vijayendra said, 'They initially promised 10 kg of rice, which was reduced to 5 kg. Now even that is being stopped.' He remarked that Karnataka is now heading towards financial bankruptcy. He also said that the state government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are unable to mobilise funds. The state government is even struggling to pay salaries to its employees, he added. 'The Chief Minister has lost control over governance. Even Congress MLAs have lost confidence in him. The government has no funds even to pay the lorry rent for transporting Anna Bhagya foodgrains, or to pay salaries to state employees. State Excise Minister R.B. Timmapur himself has admitted that some guarantee schemes may have to be discontinued,' Vijayendra said in response to a query. When asked about the tragic stampede incident during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory parade that led to 11 deaths, the State BJP President said, 'It was the Chief Minister himself who had tweeted and invited people to the RCB felicitation event. Now they are hiding the truth and trying to blame only RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). This is part of a cover-up conspiracy.'

Standing Committee on Home Affairs to meet today, discuss cybercrime
The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs will hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue of cybercrime prevention. BJP MP Radha Mohan Das Agrawal is the Chairman of the panel. The panel will meet on the subject of "Cyber Crime - Ramifications, Protection and Prevention" and hear the views of ministries and organisations. The Committee will again meet on Friday and hear the views of ministries and organisations. Meanwhile, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, headed by BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, will hold a meeting on Thursday to record the oral evidence of the representatives of the State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Indian Bank and Indian Overseas Bank on the 'Review of working of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and Emerging Issues'. Besides, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Sanjay Malhotra, is scheduled to brief the committee on 'RBI's Evolving Role in India's Dynamic Economy'. The central government is likely to bring an amendment in the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, sources told ANI. The amendment in Section 31(4) of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) will be made. This particular section mandates prior approval from the CCI for any resolution plan. Sources said the amendment in the IBC will reduce the load on the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Once the new amendment is adopted, approval from CCI would not be needed for a company planning resolution under the IBC route, they added. The plan to amend the IBC comes in the wake of the Supreme Court's latest observation during the hearing of the resolution plan of AGI Greenpac. The apex court had noted that the resolution was unsustainable without CCI approval. The Supreme Court had reportedly observed in January 2025 that AGI Greenpac Ltd's bid for the acquisition of insolvent Hindustan National Glass (HNG) Ltd without the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) approval is unsustainable and must be set aside. "AGI Greenpac's resolution plan is unsustainable as it failed to secure prior approval from the CCI, as mandated under the proviso to Section 31(4) of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). Consequently, the approval granted by the Committee of Creditors (CoC) to the resolution plan dated October 28, 2022, without the requisite CCI approval, cannot be sustained and is hereby set aside and quashed," the apex court order had said.

LeT prison radicalisation case: BJP accuses govt of being soft on terror following NIA arrests
Bengaluru: The BJP on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress-led Karnataka government after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested three individuals -- including a prison psychiatrist and a City Armed Reserve (CAR) policeman -- in connection with the 2023 Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) prison radicalisation case. The arrests were made following extensive raids across Bengaluru and Kolar districts. Those arrested include Dr. Nagaraj, a psychiatrist at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison; Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Chan Pasha; and Anees Fathima, mother of an absconding accused. The NIA said the case pertains to a conspiracy by habitual offenders to carry out terror activities in Bengaluru on behalf of the proscribed LeT outfit. Reacting to the arrests, BJP State General Secretary and MLA V. Sunil Kumar alleged that the incident exposed the Congress government's 'soft corner for terror.' 'A collapsed law and order system is a clear indication that the state is sinking poor business environment,' he said, calling the NIA operation a damning reflection of the Home Department's failure. Kumar expressed concern that state government officials, including an ASI and prison staff, were allegedly colluding with international terror networks. 'This isn't just alarming, it's evidence of silent support to extremists,' he said, questioning the role of the Karnataka Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in preventing such infiltration. 'It is shocking that staff from the Home Department allegedly aided a convicted Lashkar terrorist, Tadiyandaveed Naseer, lodged in Bengaluru Central Prison, and passed instructions to absconder Junaid Pasha, believed to be operating from abroad,' Kumar said, adding, 'What exactly is the ATS doing in this state?' He also targeted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him of weakening internal security forces -- drawing a parallel to the alleged dilution of the anti-Naxal force during his previous tenure. 'Is the Internal Security Division (ISD) also being rendered ineffective to avoid upsetting certain vote banks?' he asked. Kumar criticised what he called the government's misplaced priorities. 'While they rush to bring in 'hate speech' laws to silence Hindu activists, they ignore terror activities occurring within the state's prisons and police force,' he alleged. He warned the Congress government against being a 'silent spectator' in the face of rising security threats and accused it of indulging in appeasement politics. According to the NIA, during the raids, officials recovered arms, ammunition, digital devices, cash, gold, and documents from the accused. Dr. Nagaraj was allegedly smuggling mobile phones into the prison for use by inmates, including Naseer, with help from one Pavithra. Meanwhile, Anees Fathima is accused of passing on Naseer's instructions to her son, Junaid Ahmed, for raising funds and facilitating delivery inside the prison. The NIA also said ASI Chan Pasha had, in 2022, passed on information about Naseer's court escort movements in return for money.
