ETBWS 2025: What differentiates marketing in the age of AI

Time of India18-07-2025
Marketing is increasingly shaped by algorithms and automation. To stand out,
human connection in marketing
has never been more important. AI enables brands to operate at an unprecedented scale, but the challenge lies in preserving authenticity, emotion and cultural nuance.
At the 7th edition of the
Brand World Summit 2025
, organised by ETBrandEquity, a panel of marketing leaders explored the evolving relationship between storytelling and artificial intelligence. The panel featured Nitin Saini, vice president of marketing at Mondelez India; Shubhranshu Singh, chief marketing officer, CVBU, Tata Motors; and Anuradha Aggarwal, director of user growth and chief marketing officer, Amazon Pay.
Storytelling is being redefined in the age of AI.
Singh shared, 'I'm not so worried about artificial intelligence. I'm more worried about artificial imagination. Imagination is unique to human beings, and that must be preserved as is.'
He explained that while
generative AI
can now produce content at scale, it brings the risk of synthetic storytelling. 'It's already a reality,' he cautioned, referring to the vast quantity of AI-generated content flooding the digital landscape.
According to Singh, the true differentiator in the future of storytelling will not be technical perfection but human ownership. 'I stand by my story. I am telling it. It may not be synthetically flawless, but it is genuine. Authenticity, as a stamp of human credibility, owning the story, being real and remaining contextually relevant, is where the real battle lies. Sadly, at this stage, it feels like a losing battle against artificial intelligence,' he noted.
From a creative perspective, the heart of storytelling will always lie in crafting narratives that emotionally resonate with audiences, something AI cannot replicate.
'When we talk about 2047, I don't think AI can ever truly replace human creativity or imagination, not now and not in the foreseeable future. However, the way stories are told will evolve. As traditional CPG (consumer packaged goods) marketers who have been telling stories around Cadbury for years, we are learning that the formats and platforms may shift, but the emotional core must stay intact,' stated Saini.
Marketing at scale
Large-scale creative ideas that appeal to a broad audience will remain critical. 'It has always been challenging to speak to many people at once and still create something that excites them collectively, especially today when people increasingly believe in their uniqueness. We are going to continue marketing at scale, but we will be using far more new-age tools to do it,' highlighted Aggarwal.
Speaking about the influence of AI on marketing, Aggarwal remarked, 'Honestly, anyone's guess is as good as mine. What I was doing yesterday, my tech teams now tell me, is already outdated. This is what I know today, and it is just a fraction of how it will eventually be used. I believe we are in a rapid phase of evolution. Anyone who thinks AI will not impact their life is simply fooling themselves.'
Branding vs. performance
On performance marketing and brand-building, Singh shared, 'You cannot have persuasion before you have fame. A brand must first be well-known and well-liked. There is no question of focusing solely on performance at the expense of brand-building.'
Part of the challenge, he noted, stems from marketers themselves.
'Many avoided attributions and insisted they were just building the brand. As a result, those with Excel sheets began to win over those with stories and scripts. In my view, both brand and performance are essential. But unless you invest in building the brand, you will not have a strong performance engine either,' Singh concluded.

Krutrim layoffs continue as Ola-backed AI startup looks to build ‘leaner' teams

Ola founder Bhavish Aggarwal's AI venture, Krutrim, has reportedly laid off several employees in the company's linguistics department in its second round of job cuts this year. More than 100 employees have been impacted by the layoffs after being hired six months ago as part of Krutrim's strategy to make its workforce leaner, according to a report by Economic Times. 'As part of a strategic realignment and our commitment to efficient capital deployment, we are building leaner, more agile teams. This transition aligns with evolving business priorities and reflects our long-term vision to build India's own full-stack AI platform,' a Krutrim spokesperson told The Indian Express in a statement. The AI startup did not confirm exact figures on how many job roles have been cut in this round of layoffs. 'We urge you to refrain from publishing unverified reports that are not substantiated by accurate facts,' it added. Krutrim reportedly hired linguists for full-time roles to train its AI models and evaluate its responses in at least 10 Indian languages, including Tamil, Odia, Telugu, and Marathi. The company's linguistics team comprised over 600 people, as per the report. In June this year, Krutrim reportedly axed dozens of linguist roles after the introduction of its agentic AI app called Kruti. which is capable of autonomously booking cabs and ordering food on the Ola platform. It also has plans to enable ride bookings and food delivery orders on rival platforms such as Uber, Zomato, Swiggy, etc, through the AI agent. Earlier this year, Krutrim released a handful of new 'open-source' AI models with the aim of making India have a stronger presence in the AI race which is currently dominated by the US and China. Aggarwal, the founder and CEO of the company, had announced a $230-million injection of funds into Krutrim and said he was seeking an additional investment of $1.15 billion by 2026. He also announced Krutrim AI Labs to carry out frontier AI research with a focus on 'developing India's first frontier-scale AI models, creating state-of-the-art multimodal AI systems, and publishing breakthrough research in top-tier AI conferences like NeurIPS, ICML, ACL, Interspeech, and CVPR,' as per the official website. In May this year, a machine learning engineer at Krutrim was found dead in Bengaluru. Allegations cropped up on social media suggesting that the 25-year-old died by suicide due to 'work pressure'. However, the company responded to the social media posts, saying that the employee, Nikhil Somwanshi, was 'on personal leave at the time of the incident.'

In a poetic tribute to the spirit of the armed forces, Singh began with a line that set the tone of the discussion: 'Yeh sindoor ki rani, shaurya ki kahani hai, Bharat ke mastak par veerta ki nishani hai.' ('This sindoor is a story of courage, a symbol of bravery on India's forehead.') 'The entire operation was concluded within 22 minutes,' Singh said, highlighting the surgical efficiency of the strike that targeted terror infrastructure across the border. He dismissed claims that the mission was halted under global pressure, stating: 'India paused its action because the pre-decided political and military objectives were achieved… Saying that this operation was paused under any pressure is baseless and absolutely wrong.' 'In my political life, I have always tried not to speak lies ever.' 'We had many options, but we chose the one that caused maximum damage to terrorist camps while avoiding harm to innocent civilians in Pakistan.' Singh applauded India's advanced air defence systems for thwarting Pakistani retaliation: 'S-400, Akash missile system, air defence guns, these proved to be very useful and completely foiled this attack by Pakistan.' Responding to the Opposition's criticism, Singh recalled the BJP's own conduct during previous conflicts: 'In 1992, when we (BJP) were in Opposition, we did not ask the then government how many tanks and machines we lost; same was the case during the war of '71.' He urged everyone to focus on the bravery of soldiers rather than war statistics: 'Machino aur topo ki chinta na karein, apne sainikon ki kariye.' (Don't worry about machines and guns, honour our soldiers instead.) Singh ended with a pointed remark aimed at critics: 'Results matter in any exam.' Rajnath Singh said, "India wants friendly relations with Pakistan and other countries, successive governments have made efforts in this regard." "If we know how to make efforts for peace, we also know how to speak and explain in the language that the vicious understand," he added. "We have learnt from Lord Krishna that in the end, one needs to pick the Sudarshan Chakra to protect 'Dharma'. We saw the 2006 Parliament attack, 2008 Mumbai attacks- and now we have said enough is enough, and picked the Sudarshan Chakra..."
