Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 Text Size: Lokman said the success of any organisation does not rely solely on individuals, but requires cooperation and coordinated teamwork in fulfilling each person's roles and responsibilities. Kota Kinabalu: The Defence Ministry (Mindef) Sabah has awarded 51 of its personnel with the 2024 Excellent Service Award (APC) in appreciation of their commitment, dedication and integrity in carrying out their duties. Mindef Secretary-General Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali described the award recipients as role models and exemplary figures among the Ministry's staff in Sabah. 'This award carries great significance, as out of the many Mindef personnel in Sabah, only 51 individuals have been acknowledged for their excellence. This proves that they possess strong values of integrity, dedication and a high level of commitment in their respective roles. 'The qualities of excellence shown by award recipients should not stop at this recognition alone but must be continuously practised with consistency in their daily work,' he said when officiating the award presentation ceremony here. Lokman said the success of any organisation does not rely solely on individuals, but requires cooperation and coordinated teamwork in fulfilling each person's roles and responsibilities. 'Each of us plays a role. The smallest task, if carried out properly by each individual, will contribute to major achievements for the organisation. 'The spirit of teamwork must continue to be nurtured at all levels to foster a harmonious, conducive and productive work environment. 'We are the architects of our own work environment. If any one of us fails to function effectively, the ideal working atmosphere we aspire will not be achieved,' he added. Also present were Mindef Deputy Secretary-General (Management) Datin Roszanina Wahab; Deputy Secretary-General (Development) Datuk Mohd Shaiful Ibrahim; Army Eastern Field Commander Lieutenant General Datuk Mohd Sofi Md Lepi; Head of Human Resource Management Division Mohd Khairuzaki Paiman; and Mindef Sabah Director Samasuddin Lawe. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Singapore and India conclude five-day maritime exercise
The Republic of Singapore Navy's RSS Supreme and RSS Vigilance sailing in formation with the Indian Navy's INS Satpura during the sea phase of the Singapore-Indian Maritime Bilateral Exercise 2025. - MINDEF SINGAPORE: The Singapore and Indian navies concluded a five-day bilateral exercise on Friday (Aug 1) that involved ships from both navies and aircraft from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). The Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (Simbex) was conducted ashore at the RSS Singapura – Changi Naval Base and at sea in the southern reaches of the South China Sea, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said on Aug 2. This was the 32nd edition of Simbex, which was first held in 1994. Mindef noted that the exercise took place at a significant moment, as Singapore and India mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties. The exercise saw the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) deploy a Formidable-class frigate, RSS Supreme, and a Victory-class missile corvette, RSS Vigilance, supported by cargo ship MV Mentor. An S-70B naval helicopter, two Fokker-50 maritime patrol aircraft and two F-15SG fighter jets from the RSAF were also involved. The Indian Navy participated in the exercise with the Shivalik-class frigate INS Satpura. During the shore phase, both navies took part in joint planning, simulator training, professional exchanges and sports. They also shared best practices related to maritime air operations and compliant boarding procedures over subject-matter expert exchanges, Mindef said. At sea, the participating forces conducted complex warfare serials, including gunnery firing, air defence exercises and maritime security drills. This phase concluded with a sail-past by ships from both navies. Mindef said the successful conduct of Simbex 2025 underscores the 'enduring partnership' between the Indian Navy and the RSN. The annual exercise is one of the RSN's longest-running bilateral maritime exercises, and India's longest continuous bilateral naval exercise with any other country. Mindef said the complexity of Simbex has expanded over the years to incorporate elements of maritime security and exercise serials in the air, surface and sub-surface domains. Lieutenant-Colonel Aaron Koh, the commanding officer of RSS Supreme, said: 'Simbex is a testament to the longstanding bilateral ties between the Republic of Singapore Navy and the Indian Navy. 'Over the years, the exercise has served as a valuable platform for generations of sailors to hone operational competencies, enhance mutual understanding and build enduring people-to-people ties.' With Singapore and India marking 60 years of official ties in 2025, both countries had also extended a bilateral agreement in October 2024 on joint military training between their armies for the next five years. - The Straits Times/ANN

26 homes destroyed in Tawau fire
Published on: Saturday, August 02, 2025 Published on: Sat, Aug 02, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Firemen putting the out the fire. TAWAU: 26 homes in Kampung Kurnia Jaya, Batu 4 Jalan Apas, were destroyed in a fire that reportedly occurred around 9.30am on Friday. A motorcycle was also reported to have been destroyed, but the swift action of the fire department successfully prevented the fire from spreading to another 1,300 homes. No fatalities were reported, as all residents managed to escape before the fire spread and destroyed their homes. The incident occurred less than a week after a similar fire at Kampung Cempaka, which is also located in the Batu 4 Jalan Apas area near Kampung Kurnia Jaya. The fire on July 26 resulted in the destruction of five homes, damage to three others, and the demolition of two houses to prevent the fire from spreading. In the recent incident at Kampung Kurnia Jaya, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Sabah received an emergency call via MERS999 at 9.37am. The fire brigade team from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the scene and arrived at 9.48am to control and extinguish the fire. The operation was led by Senior Fire Officer I Jehrey Ibno and involved 39 firefighters from the Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP), assisted by seven members of the Kampung Titingan Community Fire Team. Efforts to extinguish the fire were challenged by its rapid spread, as all the affected houses were constructed primarily from wooden materials. The fire department implemented both offensive and defensive firefighting strategies in an effort to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby buildings. A 300-foot single stream method was employed using one nozzle from a portable pump utilizing seawater as the source, along with two 200-foot dual streams supplied by water from the fire engine. Their efforts were successful as the fire was fully contained by 10.14am and the operation concluded approximately one hour and 30 minutes later, after all potential hazards were addressed. In addition to the fire department, the Royal Malaysia Police, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Malaysia Civil Defence Force, and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd were also present at the scene. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
