In a Bid to Woo Dalits, Adivasis, Rahul Gandhi Invokes ‘BJP-Adani' Nexus

The Wire4 days ago
New Delhi: Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi, who is visiting Odisha as part of the Congress's attempts to revive its organisation in the state, hit out at the state BJP government for cowering under pressure from industrialists.
Addressing a 'Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh' or 'Save the Constitution Rally' in Bhubaneswar on Friday (July 11), Gandhi said that the Mohan Majhi-led government was being entirely controlled by 'five or six billionaires like Adani' who wanted to steal ' jal, jangal, zameen ' (water, forests and land) from the Adivasis of Odisha. Adivasis form around 22% of the state's population.
'Nowhere in the constitution has it been written that the country belongs to Adani, Ambani and billionaires. This country belongs to every citizen. The land in the country belongs to the poor and farmers, and not to a single billionaire. But wherever we see, be it Odisha or Chhattisgarh, only one name is being seen – Adani,' Gandhi said, in a speech that closely resembled the political messaging in his recent speeches in neighbouring Chhattisgarh.
Repeating his slogan that the constitution was 'under attack' during the BJP regime both at the Union and state levels, Gandhi held up the now-familiar copy of the constitution with a red cover.
He went on to allege that the recent stampede during the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, in which over 50 devotees were grievously injured and three were killed, happened because of the state government's VIP treatment towards the visiting Adani family.

'When the Jagannath Yatra is taken out in Odisha, when rath s [chariots] are pulled, lakhs of people witness it and follow it. Then, a drama takes place and the raths were stopped for Adani and his family. This will make you understand everything about the Odisha government,' Gandhi said.
'The Odisha government, just like Prime Minister Modi, is being run by Adani,' he said.
Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani and his family visited Puri during the Rath Yatra on June 28, before which the industrial group's free food campaign for all devotees was much publicised in the state's media.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal also accompanied Gandhi in the rally. Both leaders also presided over a political affairs committee meeting in Bhubaneswar.
Given the tone and tenor of Gandhi's speech on Friday, it appears that the Congress, which has remained out of power in the state since 1995, will focus on rebuilding its organisation among Dalits and Adivasis around issues of jal, jangal and zameen and the associated cronyism of the state government.
In his speech at the rally, Kharge, too, took aim at the alleged crony practices of the BJP. He accused the party of appointing a chief minister who aides people like 'Adani-Ambani' to corner land for mining purposes. He added that while the Congress was instrumental in securing Adivasi rights through the Forest Rights Act of 2006, the Narendra Modi government has worked hard to weaken it.
He urged people to fight against such a 'usurping' of rights and secure them by strengthening the Congress.
Kharge said that the Modi government allegedly wanted to replace the constitution with the Manusmriti by securing over 400 Lok Sabha seats, but that the 'people of the country' did not give them that chance. He said that it will take a collective fight to save the constitution. 'If the constitution is changed, there will be no universal franchise and no reservations,' he said.
Citing a recent instance where two Dalit men were publicly humiliated by a cow vigilante group in Ganjam district, he said if the constitution is changed, Dalits and Adivasis will not be allowed to enter temples.
At the rally, Gandhi also attacked the Election Commission (EC), terming it an 'organ of the BJP' and accusing the latter of stealing the election across India 'the way it did in Maharashtra'.
'In this, the EC is hatching a new conspiracy and working as a wing of the BJP instead of doing its own job. Over one crore new voters were added between Lok Sabha and assembly polls in Maharashtra. To date, nobody knows who these voters were and where they came from. We asked the EC to provide the voter list and video not once but several times. The EC still hasn't done that,' Gandhi said.
He also said that over 40,000 women were missing in Odisha, and the recent cases of sexual assault point to a larger lack of safety for women in the state.

Samik: Not party's job to attend ‘namaz' or ‘hari naam sankirtan'

Kolkata: Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya, who has been making attempts to recalibrate its political narrative in the state, on Tuesday said a party's job was not to attend "namaz" or "hari naam sankirtan (chanting Hari)". Bhattacharya, who emphasised BJP's "inclusive politics", also claimed that Trinamool had fostered divisions in society. "A political party's duty is not to participate in namaz or hari naam sankirtan, but to provide assistance to people for hospitalisation, admission in schools, or better civic amenities. People don't come to political workers to listen to Sundarkanda of Ramayana," Bhattacharya said at a workers' meet in Cooch Behar. Bhattacharya, who has earlier tried to bridge the gap with minority communities and said BJP is not against Muslims, asked party workers to refrain from divisive politics. "A political party's job is not to wedge a divide among people. We want Durga visarjan and Muharram processions to go forward simultaneously. They shouldn't need different routes," he said. Who is forcing Hindus to unite overnight? Trinamool has changed the narrative in West Bengal." He claimed a member of the Muslim community could not even protest against atrocities on Hindus without being "attacked" by the governing party. In the same breath, the Bengal BJP president criticised attempts at radicalisation. "What is happening in Murshidabad, Maheshtala or Kidderpore? Radicalisation is a curse on the entire world and we have to fight against this," he said. Saying the party had always put the country first, Bhattacharya said: "Indira Gandhi was a Congress neta. Yet (former PM Atal Bihari) Vajpayee ji called her 'Devi Durga'. BJP doesn't believe in political differences if it is about the national interest."

Siddaramaiah pitches Ahinda model as national blueprint for social justice

Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah Tuesday said Ahinda — a Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalits — must no longer be seen as a vote bank but as the "conscience of the nation," as he pitched the Karnataka model of empowerment for national adoption at the inaugural meeting of Congress' national OBC advisory council. "Let us remind the country that Ahinda is not a vote bank. It is the voice of India's conscience," Siddaramaiah said, addressing the gathering at KPCC headquarters. He said the model Karnataka had developed for social justice was rooted in fraternity and backed by data and scientific surveys. "We are here to reorient politics and reclaim our voice. India cannot progress without empowering backward classes, Dalits and minorities who have long been denied power, opportunity and dignity," he said. "And it is now ready for a national level adoption." The meeting is expected to give the CM a political edge as the prominent OBC face in Congress party, although his continuance as CM remains a matter of speculation. Former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, who is part of the advisory council, voiced concerns about the BJP-led Centre's seriousness in conducting a caste census. "There is a certain degree of scepticism among OBCs that the caste census may become only lip services after Bihar elections with BJP-sponsored petitions in the Supreme Court and high court scuttling it," Gehlot said. OBC advisory council convenor Dr Anil Jaihind said the inaugural session deliberated on Congress' stand regarding Centre's caste census plan. The two-day event is expected to conclude with the passage of three resolutions on Wednesday. The meeting also featured deliberations on Article 164(1) of the Constitution with reference to states like Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Senior Congress functionaries including former CMs Bhupesh Baghel, V Narayanasamy and M Veerappa Moily joined the discussions alongside dozens of other national OBC functionaries.

Court suspends sentence of two Congress MLAs in 2014 road block case

A sessions court in Jaipur on Tuesday suspended the sentence of two Congress legislators who were among nine persons who were sentenced last month for blocking a road in Jaipur during a 2014 protest. All nine, including Shahpura MLA Manish Yadav and Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar, were found guilty under IPC sections 147 (punishment for rioting) and 283 (causing danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation). The others sentenced by the court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on June 17, 2025 were Abhishek Chaudhary — who unsuccessfully contested 2023 Assembly elections on a Congress ticket — Dron Yadav, Rajesh Meena, Ravi Kirad, Wasim Khan, Bhanu Pratap Singh and Vidyadhar Meel. On Tuesday, the District and Sessions court suspended their sentences after their lawyers argued that there is a possibility of delay in disposal of appeal. Senior lawyer V R Bajwa, appearing for the appellants, said that if the execution of the impugned sentence is not postponed till the decision of the appeal, then the appellants will be deprived of their legal rights and that in such a case the execution of the sentence passed by the subordinate court should be postponed until the appeal is decided. The court accepted their contention and gave the relief to the petitioners. The case will now be heard on August 26, 2025. Following the trial, the court awarded a one-year sentence and a fine of Rs 3,000 each under IPC Section 147, along with an additional fine of Rs 200 under Section 283. The nine, at that time students leaders, were part of an August 2014 protest at Rajasthan University. According to court documents, the protesters from the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) had blocked the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg outside the main gate of Rajasthan University, prompting the police to book them.
