BI reports 'sharp rise' in PH foreign fugitive arrests
According to the BI, immigration personnel nabbed a total of 268 foreign fugitives from January to June, up from the 69 arrests during the same period last year.
"The Philippines will not be a hiding place for fugitives. We are determined to flush them out and send them back to face justice," Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said.
"Our continued cooperation with foreign governments and international law enforcement agencies will ensure that the Philippines remains a secure nation from these fugitives," he said.
Among those arrested was Lee Jihwan, a Korean who was nabbed arrested in January in Talisay City, Cebu for violent robbery in South Korea.
Another Korean, Chu Hoyong, was collared in February for defrauding victims of KRW 2.26 billion using fake real estate collateral. He is considered a high-value target by Korean authorities and is allegedly linked to telecom fraud operations in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, four Japanese believed to be members of the "Luffy" syndicate, were arrested between January and April. They are wanted in their home country for theft, allegedly impersonating police officers to gain entry into homes and carry out robberies.
In May, seven more Japanese connected with the "JP Dragon" syndicate were apprehended for similar crimes. The group is known for targeting elderly victims by posing as authorities and stealing their automated teller machine (ATM) cards and banking details. Their alleged leader, Ryuji Yoshioka, was apprehended in Angeles City, Pampanga last June.
The arrested individuals will undergo deportation proceedings and are to be expelled from the country for being undesirable aliens.
Last week, the BI said it deported more than 1,400 foreigners during the first six months of 2025 for violating the country's immigration laws. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

8 bodies left at Manila funeral parlor identified
Authorities have identified the eight remaining bodies retrieved from a funeral parlor in Manila, including one belonging to a foreigner. According to Mark Salazar's report on '24 Oras' on Friday, seven of them were former street dwellers. One of the bodies was identified as 'Ramil,' who is believed to be in his 50s and was found dead along Ermita Avenue last May 11. Meanwhile, 'Tata' was said to have been shot dead last June 21. Another body was identified as that of a girl aged 13 to 15 years old who was found floating on the waters of South Harbor last July 10. Further, the three other bodies belonged to senior citizens who had their last breath while on the streets. Of the eight bodies, one of them belonged to a Japanese citizen identified as Akihito Nishizuka - a 49-year-old male who was found dead inside a condominium unit in Malate in August 2024. However, none of his family members claimed his body for a year. The details on the identities of the remains were based on the spot report released by the Manila Police District's Homicide Division. Meanwhile, the Manila North Cemetery will give one week for the families to claim the bodies before they bury them, the report said. There were three families who went to the cemetery to check if their deceased loved ones were among the seized bodies from Body and Light Funeral Services. According to the report, these families have yet to claim the bodies due to remaining payments to the funeral parlor. 'Pinapunta ko na po sa Manila City Hall, sabi ko doon na lang mag-blotter. Ni-refer ko na sa City Legal yung mga problema,' said Manila North Cemetery director Daniel Tan. (I told them to go to the Manila City Hall for a blotter report. I referred them to the city's legal office about their problem.) GMA Integrated News reached out to Body and Light Funeral Services for a comment. For its part, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said that it offers wake and burial assistance to those who are in need. 'Ang pinapa-submit natin yung funeral contract, of course yung death certificate, valid ID, mayroon ding certification from the hospital, and ini-interview kasi 'yan ng ating mga social workers,' said DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao. (They only have to submit to us the funeral contract, of course, the death certificate, valid ID, and certification from the hospital, because our social workers will still have to conduct an interview first.) For street dwellers, a barangay certificate would suffice for them to avail of DSWD's burial assistance.

BI: 3 trafficking victims rescued at NAIA; 'overstaying' Korean to be deported
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) rescued three Filipino human trafficking victims supposedly bound for Spain and is currently processing the deportation of an overstaying South Korean. According to the bureau, the victims — two males and one female, who are in their late 30s and 40s — allegedly attempted to board an Emirates airline flight to Spain at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) when they were stopped by immigration personnel. The victims initially said they were working in a local tech company and were headed to Spain to attend a conference. However, immigration officers doubted their statement and referred them for secondary inspection. They then admitted that they are travelling to Spain for work and that they were recruited and that they paid over P300,000 to a contact they met on social media. "The said recruiter promised to provide them with all the necessary documentary requirements, and assistance to depart the country illegally," according to the statement posted by the bureau. Immigration Commissioner Joel Viado said they are investigating if any immigration personnel were involved in the incident. 'In line with the BI's one strike policy, we will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against those involved in human trafficking,' Viado said. The victims were turned over to the inter-agency council against trafficking for investigation and filing of cases against their recruiters. Overstaying foreigner nabbed Meanwhile, immigration authorities apprehended a South Korean man in Tubigon, Bohol over alleged overstaying. Suspect Park Yeungtae, 56, was arrested in his residence in Barangay Pooc Oriental in July 23 after allegedly failing to update his immigration status since 2016. His continued presence in the country was deemed in violation of the Philippine Immigration Act, according to the BI. 'Our officers continue to monitor and act on cases of foreign nationals who choose to overstay and disregard our immigration policies,' said Viado. 'The Bureau maintains zero tolerance for such violations. The law applies to everyone — no exceptions,' he added. Following his arrest, the foreigner was transported via ferry to Cebu City and temporarily held at the Mabolo Police Station. He is scheduled for transfer to the BI's facility in Manila. He will also undergo deportation proceedings and included in the BI's blacklist to prevent future re-entry into the country. 'The Philippines welcomes foreigners who respect our laws. But if you break them, we will take the necessary legal action,' said Viado. 'Overstaying is not a minor offense. Koreans arrested for fake travel agency, streaming app scams in Pampanga
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has arrested four Korean citizens in two separate operations in Pampanga. According to John Consulta's report in '24 Oras' on Wednesday, two Koreans were arrested for operating a fake travel agency while two others were allegedly masterminds of a streaming app scam. In one operation, personnel from BI's Fugitive Search Unit busted a residence after the Department of Tourism received complaints from some foreigners and Filipinos who were scammed by the illegitimate travel agency. Authorities found at the scene the desktop computers being used for the sham travel agency, the report added. 'Nagpapanggap nga sila na travel agency at nagtatawag sa kanilang mga biktima sa Korea upang alukin ng mga mababang flights at mababang rates sa mga hotels sa atin,' said BI Fugitive Search Unit chef Rendel Sy. (They were posing as a travel agency and were offering Koreans low rates for flights and hotels here in our country.) 'May nakausap tayong isang hotel sa Cebu at sinasabing may lumapag sa kanilang more than 30 Korean nationals na akala nila may booking sila dito sa isang 5-star hotel. Ngunit nung chineck ng hotel ay wala pong naka-register na booking itong grupong ito,' he added. (We talked to a hotel in Cebu and they told us that more than 30 Korean nationals went to them expecting that they already had a booking in this 5-star hotel. But when the hotel management checked, these foreigners did not make bookings.) In another operation, two other foreigners were arrested inside a villa for luring people to subscribe to an online streaming app. One of them is allegedly the leader of a scamming syndicate in South Korea, the report added. 'Na kukumbinsihin nila itong magpadala ng pera or mag-subscribe kung saan ito ay walang totoong subscription sa sinasabing movie streaming application,' Sy added. (They will convince them to send money or subscribe to a non-existent movie streaming application.)
