49ers QB Brock Purdy Devastated by Deebo Samuel Trade to Commanders
Coming off a season where they nearly reached the Super Bowl, the Washington Commanders got to work in the offseason to upgrade the roster. They managed to secure a notable addition in wide receiver Deebo Samuel, much to the dismay of some members within the San Francisco 49ers organization.
After being drafted in the second round back in 2019, Samuel emerged as a key piece within the 49ers' offense. He managed to get a Pro-Bowl nod in 2021 following a regular season campaign where he notched a career-high 1,405 yards to go along with six touchdowns. However, with his production steadily declining in recent years, San Francisco decided to move on from Samuel and deal him to Washington.
On Tuesday, 49ers QB Brock Purdy was a guest on the Bussin' With the Boys podcast. They discussed an array of topics, mainly about his rise from being the last pick in the draft to a full-time starting quarterback. However, towards the end of the episode, Purdy was asked about the front office trading Samuel this offseason.

Purdy didn't hold back with his true feelings, admitting he is hurt by Samuel's departure. The two built a strong bond when he was called upon to lead the charge for the 49ers.
"I mean it sucks dude," Purdy said. "He's my boy, I love Deebo. Day one, he's always had my back and believed in me when I got in. I didn't really know how they guys were gonna take it when I did get thrown in, Jimmy went down, I was like the last quarterback. Deebo man was just nothing but great to me dude. Building me up and just giving me confidence."
Purdy and Samuel nearly climbed the NFL mountaintop together in 2023, but ended up falling just short. Squaring off against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, the 49ers were unable to get the job done on the game's biggest stage.

While Samuel appears to be losing a good relationship he had in San Francisco, the veteran wideout has a lot to look forward to in his new situation. He gets to play alongside a rising star in quarterback Jayden Daniels and form an elite WR duo with Terry McLaurin (if his holdout ends). With this collection of talent, the Commanders hope to be right back in the mix in 2025.

Read more: Jets Linked to Surprise QB Trade to Challenge Justin Fields According to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Sanders has suffered a tendon injury in his foot that will keep him out for a prolonged period of time. "Broncos LB Drew Sanders, an up-and-coming defender, suffered a tendon injury in his foot in practice that will keep him out an extended period of time, sources say post-MRI," Rapoport wrote on X. "Sanders is not expected back before the season begins and further testing will determine what's next." Not only will he miss time during training camp and the preseason, he isn't expected to begin the season on the field. That is a tough break for the Broncos. During the 2024 NFL season with Denver, Sanders only played in four games. He totaled eight tackles and a sack. Back in his rookie season with the Broncos, he racked up 24 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sanders is just 23 years old. He was the No. 67 overall pick in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft by Denver. While his future is still bright, his absence is disappointing for the team. Dre Greenlaw, one of the team's big free agency additions, suffered a torn quadriceps injury that will likely sideline him for a portion of the 2025 season. Denver will need other players to step up to help fill some gaps due to injury. Hopefully, the team will be able to get everyone back to full health early on in the year. It will be interesting to see if the Broncos make any late-offseason moves to bring in more talent at the linebacker position. y'all see that Jaylin Lane catch??? The Washington Commanders returned to the practice fields in Ashburn on Sunday for Day 4 of training camp. It was "Back Together Weekend," with fans in attendance for the first time. It also featured the end of wide receiver Terry McLaurin's holdout, although he will begin on the PUP list. That meant Sunday was the perfect time for a rookie to show everyone what he was made of, and that's exactly what wide receiver Jaylin Lane did. Being defended in the back corner of the end zone, quarterback Jayden Daniels threw a dart to Lane, with cornerback Mike Sainristil and safety Quan Martin in perfect coverage. The 5-foot-10 Lane makes a phenomenal play on the ball. Check it out: What a throw. What a catch. Unfortunately, it was ruled incomplete, but that does not detract from the play Lane made on the ball. He was going up against arguably Washington's top two defensive backs and caught the ball. Daniels got this ball in behind them to give rookie Jaylin Lane a shot. Incomplete upon review but an awesome 1st team rep for the rook. That's what makes Jayden Daniels special. He was able to deliver a perfect throw in a pressure situation. Everyone was already excited about Lane, the speedy rookie receiver/punt returner from Virginia Tech. That catch will only enhance his legend throughout the remainder of this camp and the preseason.

"That's the only thing on my mind in camp, is just like, what can we do to bring a Lombardi trophy home?" Allen said. Allen put together the best season of his career last year. He won the NFL MVP, but that didn't mean much to him. Without a championship, the MVP was simply another award, although he was happy to win it. Throughout the course of the year, Allen played in 16 games. He completed 63.6 percent of his pass attempts for 3,731 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just six interceptions, while also racking up 531 yards and 12 more touchdowns on the ground. At 29 years old, Allen seems to have a new sense of urgency. He knows that a championship window can close at any time.
