Siddaramaiah has already been given a message to quit State politics, says Joshi

The Hindu17 hours ago
I think the Congress appointed Siddaramaiah to its national OBC cell to make him to quit the Chief Minister's post, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi said in Hubballi on Sunday.
'It is not clear why the Chief Minister has been appointed to the national-level team. I think it is a message asking him to quit State-level politics and go to Delhi. However, I do not think he will succeed in his new role. A leader who is unable to handle political affairs at the State-level will not be able to achieve anything significant at the national level,' Mr. Joshi told reporters.
'On the other hand, Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC president D.K. Shivakumar has been going around saying that he will be the next Chief Minister. But then, he seems to have changed his mind recently. He is making philosophical statements of renouncing political power,' Mr. Joshi said.
Mr. Joshi criticised Mr. Siddaramaiah's statement about a connection between COVID-19 vaccine and heart attacks in young people, as unscientific.
'It is an irresponsible statement. It is an insult to the country. Over 150 nations are using COVID-19 vaccines. The whole world has praised the vaccine-makers of India. People in responsible positions should not make such statement,' Mr. Joshi said.
'The Chief Minister has taken the vaccine. Was it Indian or foreign? Is he criticising the vaccine just because it was promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi? Mr. Siddaramaiah should tender a public apology for his anti-vaccine statement,' Mr. Joshi said.
'The Congress leaders have made such irresponsible and insulting statement in the past too. They insulted the country during the war with Pakistan,' he said.
He said that Congress legislators, including Basavaraj Rayaraddi, are saying that there is no money for development as all the funds are spent on guarantees.
'Yesterday, Shiggaon MLA Nasir Khan Pathan also made a similar statement during a public programme. I was present there. It is unfortunate that the Congress government is not doing any development work,' Mr. Joshi said.

'Fraudulent': Congress slams govt assertion on India being among 'most equal' countries, calls PIB as Press (mis)Information Bureau

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The Congress on Monday termed as "fraudulent" and "intellectually dishonest" the government's assertion that India is among the world's most equal countries, and said the Modi government cannot simply wish away the stark reality of deepening inequalities by "doctoring data".The opposition party's attack came after an official release, citing World Bank data, said inequality in India has come down significantly between 2011-12 and 2022-23, making it the fourth-most equal country Congress demanded that the Press Information Bureau (PIB) must clarify as to the origins of this press release and retract it immediately. Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, "Aap chronology samajhiye. The World Bank released its Poverty and Equity Brief for India in April 2025. Immediately after, the Congress released a statement identifying the several warning signs that the World Bank had flashed for poverty and inequality in India - including warnings about government data underestimating inequality."Three months after its release, on July 5, the Modi government's drumbeaters and cheerleaders in the "Press (mis)Information Bureau" issued a press release making the "staggeringly out-of-touch" claim that India is among the world's most equal societies, Ramesh said in a a press statement issued on July 6, the Congress once again warned that the government's data interpretation was based on the limited availability and the uncertain quality of existing data, as well as to the selection of dated benchmarks to measure poverty, he it emerges that the Modi government was not only "negligent" in its analysis of the World Bank report , it was also outright "intellectually dishonest", Ramesh claimed that to arrive at its conclusion, the Modi government deliberately chose to use two different benchmarks: consumption inequality in India and income inequality in other countries."A comparison between two entities requires us to use the same metric to judge them. This is not just a fundamental principle of economic analysis, but one of common sense" Ramesh choice to measure consumption inequality in India was also deliberate, he pointed out that consumption inequality is always less than income inequality since the rich save a large part of their income."When we compare India's income equality to that of the rest of the world, India performs extremely poorly: India is ranked 176 out of a total of 216 countries in 2019. In other words, India is not the 4th most equal society - it is actually the 40th most unequal society in the world," he claimed."Income inequality in India has grown, and worsened in the last few years under the Modi Raj," Ramesh inequality in India is even higher than income inequality, reflecting the disproportionate gains of the elite in the last 11 years of cronyism, he said."Such fraudulent analysis, being published through the auspices of the PIB, reveals one of two things: a disturbing lack of talent in this government, or an equally disturbing lack of intellectual integrity. The PIB must clarify as to the origins of this press release and retract it immediately," Ramesh said."There has been a dangerous trend of such random ad-hoc statements and declarations coming from the Modi Government's officials," he claimed."In May 2025, we saw a similar flurry of incoherent and diverging statements from NITI Aayog officials on the size of the Indian economy. The political leadership's penchant for distortion and propaganda has clearly trickled down to officials as well," Ramesh "doctoring data", the Modi government cannot simply wish away the stark reality of what is staring us in the face - growing and deepening inequalities, driven by its mindsets and policies, he its release, the government attributed the reduction in inequality to various initiatives and schemes pursued during the last decade."...India's Gini Index stands at 25.5, making it the fourth most equal country in the world, after the Slovak Republic, Slovenia and Belarus," the statement said.

Image courtesy: LinkedIn/@VaibhavTaneja Indian-origin executive Vaibhav Taneja, who currently serves as Tesla's Chief Financial Officer, has found himself at the heart of Elon Musk's latest political venture, the newly launched America Party (AMEP). According to official documents filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Taneja has been listed as both the Treasurer and Custodian of Records for the party. Taneja took over as Tesla's CFO in August 2023 and has since been a key figure in Musk's leadership team. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The development comes amid rising buzz about Musk's growing ambitions in politics. On Saturday, the billionaire took to his platform X (formerly Twitter) to announce the launch of a new political party, saying it was meant to 'give Americans their freedom back' and push back against what he called a 'one-party system' in the country. So, who exactly is Vaibhav Taneja, and what does his role mean for the future of Musk's new party? Here's a closer look. Who is Vaibhav Taneja? Vaibhav Taneja was born and raised in India. He completed his commerce degree from Delhi University, went on to become a Chartered Accountant in 2000, and later earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential in 2006. He began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), where he worked for 17 years across offices in India and the US, advising Fortune 500 clients on financial controls and IPO preparation. In 2016, Taneja joined SolarCity, the solar energy company founded by Elon Musk's cousins. After Tesla acquired SolarCity later that year, he transitioned to Tesla. By 2017, he was appointed Corporate Controller at Tesla. His rise was quick, he became Chief Accounting Officer in 2019 and took over as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in August 2023 after the departure of Zach Kirkhorn. Now 47, Taneja oversees Tesla's global financial operations and has been a key player in the company's India strategy. In January 2021, he was appointed as the director of Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd, the company's Indian subsidiary. Earlier this year, Taneja's lucrative paycheck made headlines. According to The Washington Post, he earned a staggering $139 million in 2024, including stock options and equity awards, placing him ahead of tech heavyweights like Microsoft's Satya Nadella and Google's Sundar Pichai in total earnings. What will be Taneja's role in Musk's America Party? With more than two decades of experience in finance, accounting, and global leadership, Vaibhav Taneja has long been seen as one of Elon Musk's most trusted lieutenants. Now, his influence appears to be expanding into the political space as well. According to paperwork filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), now widely shared on social media, the America Party lists its headquarters at 1 Rocket Road, Hawthorne. The filing names Musk as the party's sole candidate, while Taneja is listed as both the Treasurer and Custodian of Records, with a Texas-based address linked to him. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD He will be responsible for keeping detailed documentation of every financial transaction the party makes, from contributions and loans to expenditures and debts. Musk had hinted at this political move back on July 1, shortly after Trump's ' Big, Beautiful Bill', a controversial tax and spending bill, was passed in the Senate. Posting on X, he wrote: 'If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.' If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day. Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE. — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 30, 2025 Though once aligned with Donald Trump, even heading Trump's short-lived Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and donating significantly to his 2024 campaign, Musk has since distanced himself, publicly criticising the spending bill. The fallout has reportedly led to rising tensions between the two, with Trump warning that the government might 'reconsider' its contracts with Musk's companies. Meanwhile, Trump was quick to mock the new party during a press interaction on Sunday. 'I think it's ridiculous to start a third party,' he told reporters before boarding Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey. 'Starting a third party just adds to confusion. He can have fun with it, but I think it's ridiculous.' Taneja's appointment is perhaps the clearest sign yet that Musk plans to run this new political outfit much like his companies, keeping control within a small, loyal group of trusted executives.
