Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in conjunction with the 46th ASEAN Summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) today.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- ASEAN is set to fully embrace the advances in science, technology and innovation, especially breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing, as the grouping takes a bold step into the future under Malaysia's Chairmanship.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan outlined this focus during his opening remarks at the 36th ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) Meeting here today, ahead of the 46th ASEAN Summit.
He said these rapid digital advancements hold the key to faster economic growth, societal progress and greater security across Southeast Asia.
'These advances in technology would assist us in our journey, as long as we advance together as one.
'Above all, we must ensure that no one is left behind, as we prepare our region to meet future challenges with resilience and foresight,' said the Malaysian chair.
Mohamad stressed that ASEAN's ability to remain connected and resilient will be crucial to maintaining its competitiveness and relevance.
He said the bloc's track record proves that when member states unite with determination, great opportunities are created for its people.
'ASEAN must continue its rally, with purpose and in unity, to emerge stronger in the face of a turbulent world, characterised by fragmentation and uncertainty,' he added.
Earlier, Mohamad described the meeting as a timely opportunity to reflect on ASEAN's progress across its three pillars, namely the Political-Security Community (APSC), Economic Community (AEC) and Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC).

Thailand deploys F-16 jets in second strike ahead of midnight ceasefire with Cambodia

Image from The Nation Thailand/ANN BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): Thai Air Force strikes border targets hours before ceasefire, as Cambodia continues troop build-up near disputed temple zones. Hours before the agreed ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia is set to take effect at midnight, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) conducted a second round of F-16 fighter jet operations targeting areas near Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temples in Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province. The evening sortie involved two F-16 jets and followed an earlier morning mission in the same area. Both operations reportedly achieved their objectives and the aircraft returned safely to base, according to military officials. The Second Army Area's Operations Centre reported on the situation as of 12pm today, confirming that fighting along the Thai–Cambodian border remains intense. Cambodian forces were observed reinforcing their positions and increasing troop deployments from further inland in an effort to seize control of strategic locations near the Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temple zones. Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" from midnight (1700 GMT) on Monday, in a bid to halt their deadliest conflict in more than a decade after five days of fierce fighting that has displaced more than 300,000 people. After days of efforts by Malaysia, chair of the Asean regional bloc, the United States and China to bring both sides to the table, the two countries' leaders agreed to end hostilities, resume direct communications and create a mechanism to implement the truce. At least 36 people have been killed in the fighting, mostly civilians. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked his acting Thai counterpart Phumtham Wechayachai for what he said was a positive role and said he deeply appreciated Trump's "decisive mediation" and China's constructive participation. "We agreed that the fighting will stop immediately," he said, expressing confidence that both sides could rebuild trust and confidence. - The Nation Thailand/ANN

Anwar-led talks yield ceasefire, reinforce Asean's role in regional peace

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The agreement on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire reached between Thailand and Cambodia during a special meeting held in Putrajaya on Monday highlighted Asean's role as an effective mechanism in resolving regional disputes, as both parties complied with the bloc's call for order. School of Law and Governance Senior Lecturer at Taylor's University, Dr Julia Roknifard, said the desire of Asean members to avoid interference in the internal affairs of the grouping, prompted by United States President Donald Trump's threats, has encouraged both Thailand and Cambodia to adhere to the principle of Asean centrality. "At first, they (Thailand and Cambodia) didn't seem so open to the idea that Asean can play a role, saying that they would like to negotiate on a bilateral basis between each other. Yet, Asean turned out to be the very mechanism to call them to order, and they complied. "The very fact that the Thai and Cambodian leaders had the confidence to hold the talks in Malaysia with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the host bodes well for Asean as a cooperative organisation,' she said when contacted by Bernama on Monday. Earlier, Anwar announced that Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire amid rising tensions along their disputed border, following a special meeting he chaired in Putrajaya on Monday. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai attended the meeting. Also in attendance were United States (US) Ambassador to Malaysia, Edgard Kagan, and Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing. The US was a co-organiser of the meeting, while China was an observer to promote a peaceful resolution to the ongoing situation. According to Roknifard, both Cambodia and Thailand must work towards putting an end to the conflict, preferably for good, as such situations create an opening for external powers that are seeking to further their own interests. "This will be detrimental to the whole region as we will see instability, potentially a refugee crisis and the proliferation of weapons and increased criminal and militant activity. "None of this will be good for Asean, which is already struggling to address the conflict in Myanmar and potential conflicts in the South China Sea,' she added. During the special meeting in Putrajaya on Monday, Cambodia and Thailand reached a common understanding, including an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, with effect from 24:00 hours (local time) on July 28. The two South-East Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic rows over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border. Tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have been simmering since May 28 following a skirmish between their troops near the disputed Preah Vihear border area, which claimed the life of a Cambodian soldier. The latest round of hostilities erupted on July 24. Armed clashes have been reported along Cambodia's northern border region, with fatalities on both sides. - Bernama
