Sabah Tourism Board hosts GSTC workshop to drive sustainable tourism

The full-day workshop brought together 80 key tourism stakeholders – consisting of tourism associations, government departments and agencies and academicians.
Advertisement Organised by the Sabah Tourism Board, the workshop featured speakers from GSTC, namely, Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC and Kingston Khoo, a certified GSTC trainer. Both experts led insightful sessions that introduced participants to the GSTC Criteria and provided guidance on sustainable tourism implementation. The workshop was officiated by Datuk Josie Lai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, who emphasised Sabah's responsibility as a steward of its natural and cultural treasures. 'Sustainable tourism is not just a goal; it is a necessity to safeguard Sabah's environment and culture for future generations while supporting economic growth and community well-being,' she said. Following her keynote address, Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of Sabah Tourism Board, delivered a briefing on the importance of GSTC in guiding Sabah's sustainable tourism efforts. He mentioned that the objective for implementing the GSTC criteria is to align Sabah's tourism sector with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by integrating these global standards. This approach enhances Sabah's international credibility, fosters sustainable business opportunities, and strengthens its position as a premier ecotourism destination on the world stage. Sabah is already making significant progress, with three key sites – Maliau Basin, Imbak Canyon, and the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley – having achieved GSTC certification, demonstrating local commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism best practices. The workshop provided an in-depth overview of sustainable tourism principles, current global trends, and the pivotal role of the GSTC and its international standards in guiding both public and private sector practices. The morning sessions highlighted successful case studies from abroad, providing helpful information regarding real-world implementation of sustainability in tourism. A highlight of the day was a sharing session by Grace Pounsin from Yayasan Sabah Group, who detailed their successful journey in achieving GSTC certification for the Maliau Basin and Imbak Canyon Conservation Areas – powerful examples of Sabah's leadership in conservation and sustainability. The afternoon sessions focused on local context, emphasising the role of various stakeholders in applying GSTC standards in Sabah. Interactive discussions encouraged participants to explore practical and collaborative approaches to enhancing sustainability across the tourism value chain. In his closing remarks, Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of the Sabah Tourism Board, encouraged all participants to turn knowledge into action. 'We now have a clearer understanding of how sustainable tourism can drive real change for our communities and ecosystems. 'Let us take the GSTC standards and make them part of how we plan, operate, and innovate in Sabah's tourism sector. Together, we can ensure that tourism development benefits both people and the planet.' 592 swimmers from 39 countries compete in OCEANMAN

KOTA KINABALU (July 21): The breathtaking scenery of Pantai Dalit, Tuaran has made it a fan favourite among holidaymakers looking to enjoy the best of Sabah's tropical paradise. Yesterday, Pantai Dalit once again became the chosen playground for 592 swimmers from 39 countries, vying to qualify for the OCEANMAN World Final Championship 2025 in Dubai, UAE, from December 3rd to 7th, 2025. This year's edition of OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu challenged swimmers of all ages and abilities to test their limits against the backdrop of the breathtaking Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu's coastline. The event featured a range of distances, including the Sprint 2km, 5km, 10km and 500-metre relay race, as well as the OCEANKIDS 500-metre race, catering to swimmers of all levels. Despite the choppy waves and strong wind conditions on that day, which affected the event's scheduling, the event still proceeded relatively smoothly. 'We wanted all our swimmers to swim and compete under the best sea conditions,' said OCEANMAN Event Director, Azura Zainol Abidin. 'Based on the technical review, we had to decide to change some of the flag timings,' she concluded. OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu offered a unique and unforgettable experience of swimming in crystal-clear waters surrounded by lush tropical landscapes. 'With such strong international representation, I believe OCEANMAN will help propel Sabah's reputation as a leading sports tourism destination in Malaysia,' said Sabah Tourism Board CEO Julinus Jeffrey Jimit. 'As the host venue for 2024 to 2026, we are excited about the potential this event holds for positioning Sabah as a prime destination for sports tourism. And with the event being held in Tuaran instead of the city centre, we are also excited to be able to highlight rural tourism to all the participants,' he added. Julinus also remarked that the economic impact of events like OCEANMAN cannot be overstated. Sports tourism is a growing segment that attracts high-spending visitors who not only participate in the event but also explore the surrounding areas. By hosting this prestigious series, STB is positioning Sabah as a destination for active travellers who seek meaningful, adventure-filled experiences. The OCEANMAN World Series event is the largest open-water event in the world. OCEANMAN Kota Kinabalu 2025 is organised by Tough Gorilla Ventures with support from the Sabah Tourism Board, Tourism Malaysia and Shangri-la Rasa Ria, Kota Kinabalu as the co-sponsors. The top 10 swimmers in every age group, as well as the top three from the Inspiration category, will get a qualification slot for the OCEANMAN World Final in OCEANMAN, Half OCEANMAN, and Sprint distances.

Melaka to build inland port in Taboh Naning, says CM Ab Rauf
MELAKA: A new inland port in Taboh Naning here is poised to boost regional logistics capability without compromising environmental or public safety, says Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said the Melaka Inland Port (MIP), a development plan on 52.89ha of land owned by Perbadanan Melaka (MCORP), is set to become a secure and sustainable logistics hub that will exclude the handling of hazardous materials. "It's being designed to streamline cargo movement via railway, particularly supporting industries in Johor, Negri Sembilan and here. "The port will cater exclusively to container cargo, palletised goods, commercial items in full compliance with environmental, health and safety standards," he said during the second session of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly on Monday (July 21). Ab Rauf said the planned port will focus solely on non-hazardous cargo and its development reflects our commitment to sustainable and responsible infrastructure. He said the project will adopt a full environmental, social and governance (ESG) approach, incorporating green technology, low-carbon rail connectivity, community empowerment and transparent governance. 'It aligns with Melaka's sustainability roadmap and the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). "We want this to be a benchmark for future developments that place both community welfare and environmental protection at the forefront,' he added. Phase One of the project, Ab Rauf revealed, will involve a gross development cost (GDC) of RM230.8mil, following a formal agreement signed between MCORP and DS Rail Mobility Sdn Bhd on June 13. He said the MIP is part of a wider development strategy for the MCORP Hi-Tech Park, which spans approximately 2.02ha and the planning for the port began in November last year. He said currently, the company is preparing documentation for planning permission from the local authorities, including an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the port. "Phase One of the project is expected to commence operations by October 2026, featuring components such as a spur line to the KTMB main railway, enclosed warehouses, a container yard, depot services, a Customs inspection centre and an operations office building," he said.
