Sporting Lisbon president rips into wantaway Viktor Gyokeres and promises disciplinary action - as £70m Arsenal target goes on strike
Gyokeres, 27, failed to report for the club's pre-season training this week, despite Sporting having granted him an extended summer break until Saturday, July 12.
That patience has now run out, with Varandas vowing to hand the in-demand a 'hefty fine'.
Gyokeres is thought to have agreed pre-contract terms with Arsenal, with the only remaining stumbling block in the way of a move to north London being his transfer fee.
The Gunners are yet to meet Sporting's firm £69m valuation - but Varandas' recent comments show that there are no signs of desperation from the Portuguese club.
'We're calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group,' he told Portuguese news agency Lusa.
'If they don't want to pay Viktor's fair market value, we'll be very comfortable with that for the next three years.
'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, not only are they completely wrong, but they are also making it more complicated for the player to leave.
'No one is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.'
Gyokeres scored a staggering 54 goals for Sporting last term across all competitions, and is rated as one of the most prolific forwards in Europe.
The former Coventry City and Brighton striker currently has three years still remaining on his contract with the Portuguese giants, though it appears unlikely in the extreme that he will be seeing out those terms as things stand.
Since making a £20m switch from Coventry to Sporting in 2023, Gyokeres has gone on a remarkable scoring spree in Portugal, netting 97 times in just 102 appearances across two seasons.
Gyokeres scored 43 goals for Coventry in his two and a half seasons, but never got to suit up in the Premier League for Brighton.
He has previously spoke of his desire to return to the English top flight, to get revenge for his empty spell with the Seagulls.
'It's one of the biggest leagues in Europe,' Gyokeres said. 'I spent several years there without being able to play a single match.
'So, of course, it's something I would like to do. It would be a great revenge.'

England rout neighbours Wales to cruise into Euro 2025 quarter-finals
ST. GALLEN, Switzerland, July 13 (Reuters) - Reigning champions England thrashed neighbours Wales 6-1 to reach the Women's Euro 2025 quarter-finals on Sunday, securing second spot in Group D and cruising into the knockouts on a high note. Georgia Stanway struck from the penalty spot in the 13th minute after a foul in the box, calmly sweeping her shot into the far-left corner past the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Olivia Clark to open the floodgates. Ella Toone found the back of the net with a scrappy goal eight minutes later, while Lauren Hemp nodded home a third inside 30 minutes. Alessia Russo bagged her first goal of the tournament just before halftime and Beth Mead cut inside a defender before slotting home in the 72nd minute. Hannah Cain pulled one back to the delight of the Wales fans in the 76th minute, but England's Aggie Beever-Jones replied in the 89th. England will face Sweden in the quarter-finals on Thursday. France finished top of the group after their 5-2 victory over the Netherlands.

Viktor Gyokeres' agent waives fee for brokering deal between Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon
Arsenal's long search for a centre-forward is almost over, with the club on the brink an agreement with Sporting CP to sign Viktor Gyokeres. The two clubs are finalising a transfer that is expected to be worth an initial £55 million, with a further £8.5 million in potential add-ons. The breakthrough has come after the striker's agent agreed to waive his cut of the deal, which is thought to be about £6 million. On Sunday night, the clubs were working on the final terms of the add-ons. It emerged last week that Arsenal were prioritising a move for Gyokeres ahead of other attacking targets such as RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins. Gyokeres, the former Brighton and Coventry City forward, had made it clear that he wanted to move to north London by not reporting for pre-season training over the past few days. The increasingly fractious relationship between Sporting and Gyokeres has made the deal more complicated for Andrea Berta, Arsenal's sporting director. Last month, the Sporting president said he would not bow down to 'blackmail and insults' amid claims that Gyokeres believed a gentleman's agreement had been disrespected. The Sweden international has been a sensation in Portugal, scoring 97 goals in 102 matches since moving from Coventry in the summer of 2023. A new striker was Arsenal's top priority for this transfer window after they were unable to close deals for Sesko a year ago and Watkins in January. Injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus meant that Mikel Arteta deployed midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift No 9 in the second half of last season. If Arsenal complete deals for Gyokeres and Chelsea winger Noni Madueke, who is set to sign for the club in the coming days, it would take their summer transfer spending to more than £170 million. Gyokeres and Madueke would join midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard as new arrivals. Arsenal have also signed goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for £5 million.

Chelsea win FIFA Club World Cup with victory over PSG - as Donald Trump watches from stands
Why you can trust Sky News Chelsea have thrashed European champions Paris Saint-Germain to win FIFA's Club World Cup - as Donald Trump watched from the stands. The French side were the heavy favourites to win the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey but were 3-0 down within 43 minutes. They eventually finished the game with 10 men after midfielder Joao Neves pulled Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella's hair in the 85th minute. Chelsea talisman Cole Palmer had scored almost identical finishes in the 22nd and 30th minute to give the West London side a two-goal advantage a third of the way through the tie. The England international later played a neat pass to Brazilian forward Joao Pedro - who lifted the ball over PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to give the Blues a three-goal advantage just before half-time. PSG came out strong at the start of the second half and nearly narrowed the deficit in the 53rd minute when Ousmane Dembele struck at goal from six yards. However, it was well-saved by Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez who put in a strong performance all night for the West London side. Goalscorer Pedro received a standing ovation from the Chelsea fans as he was replaced by Liam Delap on the 67th minute - with the Englishman nearly scoring with his first touches of the game as he had a shot from outside the area well-saved by Donnarumma. Following the final whistle players from both sides appeared to be involved in a large altercation on the pitch. Please refresh the page for the fullest version.
