Tamil Nadu Polls: OPS Exits NDA After Snub; Whats His Next Move - DMK or Vijays TVK?
Tensions With EPS, BJP
Notably, OPS, once a key leader of the AIADMK and a former ally of the BJP within the NDA, has been politically adrift since a bitter power struggle with Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) led to a split in the AIADMK. The legal battle between the OPS faction and the EPS faction over the control of the AIADMK is still on, and the same may create trouble during next year's election if the issue is not resolved before that. Since the BJP has grown closer to the EPS, who is leading the AIADMK, the saffron party has reportedly been ignoring OPS.
The split follows what is widely viewed as a snub by the central leadership. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Tamil Nadu, OPS had written to him seeking an appointment, expressing that it would be his 'singular honour' to meet the Prime Minister at Gangaikonda Cholapuram. However, the request was reportedly declined, leaving the OPS camp disappointed.
In the aftermath, OPS took to social media to criticise the Union Government for delays in releasing funds under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, signalling a growing rift with the BJP. His departure from the NDA is now being seen as the culmination of these tensions.
OPS's Next Political Move
OPS is now preparing to embark on a statewide tour in the lead-up to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Adding an element of political intrigue, OPS met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin during a morning walk earlier today, raising speculation about potential future alignments. According to reports, the OPS faction is also in talks with actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). OPS reportedly has two relevant options - the ruling DMK or the debutant TVK spearheaded by Vijay. As per reports, TVK is also keen on inducting OPS as the party believes the former CM holds ground in key parts of the state.
Strong Support From Thevar Community
The exit of the OPS faction from the NDA is expected to impact Tamil Nadu's political landscape significantly, especially among the Thevar community, a powerful social group in southern Tamil Nadu that has traditionally backed the AIADMK. It remains to be seen how the community will respond to OPS' decision to walk away from the BJP alliance. With the 2026 elections looming, the move sets the stage for potential realignments and shifting loyalties in the state's dynamic political scene.

Telangana Congress leaders depart for Delhi in a special train to demand 42% BC reservations
In a show of political commitment, Backward Classes (BC) leaders from Telangana left for New Delhi in a special train on Monday (August 4, 2025) to participate in a three-day campaign demanding the implementation of 42% reservations for BCs. They will join the dharna at Jantar Mantar on Wednesday (August 6, 2025) where Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, his Cabinet colleagues will also participate seeking Presidential assent to the bills passed by the Telangana Legislature on BC reservations. Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan, Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar and Vakiti Srihari flagged off the train at Cherlapally railway station on Monday morning. While Ms. Meenakshi will travel up to New Delhi, the other three leaders travelled up to Alair and will join the dharna the day after. Speaking to the media, Mr. Goud said that BC leaders have departed for Delhi to press for their constitutional and social rights. 'The collective voice of BCs must move forward with unity,' he said. Mr. Goud said that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has taken up the BC cause nationally, and the Telangana Congress, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, is playing a central role in this movement. 'After the 1931 caste census, this is the first historic step towards true representation,' he added. The TPCC president came down heavily on BJP leaders N. Ramachandra Rao and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, accusing them of deliberately blocking the BC reservation bill. He also questioned the silence of prominent BJP BC leaders, including Bandi Sanjay, Etela Rajender, and Dharmapuri Arvind. 'Do the BJP's BC leaders have no courage? Why are they not speaking up?' Praising Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's sincerity, he said, 'Though Revanth Reddy is not from the BC community, he has worked with complete commitment towards implementing BC reservations.' The Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who also addressed the media, reiterated that the campaign for BC reservations was not a partisan issue. 'A special train carrying Congress leaders has departed for Delhi with a clear agenda of getting consent to the 42% BC reservations,' he said. 'Just as we fought unitedly for Telangana, we must now fight unitedly for BC rights. Let us keep this movement above party lines and politics.' He argued that the caste census was conducted in a legally sound and transparent manner, laying the groundwork for implementing BC reservations through legislation.

CM Siddaramaiah slams BJP over water poisoning incident
BENGALURU: CM Siddaramaiah on Sunday attacked BJP and pro-Hindu organisations over a Sri Rama Sene member and his two associates allegedly poisoning drinking water at the government school in Hulikatti village of Savadatti taluk in Belagavi district. They allegedly hatched the conspiracy to get the headmaster transferred as he is a Muslim. He congratulated the police for 'foiling the evil plot to massacre children', and expressed confidence that the judicial system will deliver punishment to the culprits who committed the act. 'BJP leaders who sow hatred in society for political gains in the name of religion should introspect. Will Pramod Muthalik (Sri Rama Sene chief), BY Vijayendra and R Ashoka take the responsibility? Let the leaders who support anti-social acts committed by such people come forward and atone for their sins,' he posted on 'X'. 'With the malicious intent of having the headmaster transferred, Sagar Patil, the taluk president of Sri Ram Sene, along with two others, has been arrested for poisoning the drinking water of schoolchildren. In this incident that occurred 15 days ago, several children fell ill, but fortunately, no lives were lost,' he said. '... In the land of the Sharanas, who proclaimed, 'compassion is the root of religion,' how could such cruelty and hatred arise? Even at this moment, I cannot believe it. BJP leaders who sow hatred in society in the name of religion to cook their political broth should introspect,' he said.

BJP reaffirms support to de-notified nomadic tribes in Andhra
VIJAYAWADA: BJP AP president PVN Madhav reaffirmed the party's commitment to the welfare of de-notified nomadic tribes during a roundtable conference in Vijayawada, held ahead of the 75th Vimukti Divas (Liberation Day). Addressing tribal leaders, Madhav said only the Narendra Modi-led government has allocated a dedicated budget for these communities, which have been historically marginalised due to colonial-era policies. He recalled that these tribes, despite participating in India's freedom struggle, were branded as criminals by the British in 1871, resulting in decades of persecution. Their liberation began on August 31, 1952, and gained momentum under former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose commission highlighted the cultural significance of these communities. 'The commission clearly stated that India's rich cultural heritage owes much to these nomadic tribes,' Madhav said. Since 2014, the Modi government has prioritised their recognition and welfare, he added. Highlighting local challenges, Madhav noted that many de-notified tribes in Andhra Pradesh still lack voting rights, contributing to their continued socio-economic struggles. He said the BJP has conducted studies to address this issue and is formulating plans to protect identity and dignity. As part of the 75th Vimukti Diwas celebrations, Madhav announced a month-long series of 'Spoorthi' programmes across all districts, culminating in a grand event on August 30. BJP MLA Dr Parthasarathi, former IAS officer Dasari Srinivas Rao, State General Secretary Bitra Shivannarayana, and OBC Morcha State President Rongala Gopi Srinivas were also present.
