Government supports suspended Kerala University registrar

New Indian Express14 hours ago
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A day after the suspension of Kerala University registrar K S Anil Kumar over the Bharat Mata portrait row, the state government and pro-Left Syndicate members came out in support of the official, terming the action against him as a 'misuse of authority' by Vice-Chancellor Mohanan Kunnummal.
Earlier in the day, Higher Education Minister R Bindu said Anil could continue in office as only the university Syndicate has the right to take action against him. General Education Minister V Sivankutty also strongly criticised the VC, accusing him of 'acting like a goon' of the governor.
Left-backed Syndicate members, teachers and employees held protests at the university in solidarity with the registrar and accused the Sangh Parivar of creating a situation similar to the days of the Emergency. The registrar came to the university premises later in the day where he was given a rousing reception by SFI workers and members of pro-Left university employees unions. The registrar, who was handed over a copy of the Constitution by the SFI workers, left the university soon after.
It is reliably learnt that the registrar is likely to approach the court against his suspension. 'The prayer before the court would be to issue directions to the VC to convene the Syndicate meeting at the earliest,' said a source close to the official.
Meanwhile, Digital University Vice Chancellor Ciza Thomas, who was given the additional charge of VC of Kerala University owing to Kunnummal's absence, assumed office on Thursday. She was welcomed by pro-Right wing Syndicate members and employees' organisation representatives.
The pro-Right wing Syndicate members termed SFI workers entering the university in protest as a serious security lapse.

‘Unacceptable': Naveen Patnaik Condemns BJP MLA's Sexist Remark Against BJD Leader

Last Updated: BJD Chief Naveen Patnaik condemned BJP MLA Santosh Khatua's sexist remarks against BJD's Lekhasri Samantsinghar. Patnaik criticized BJP's silence. Samantsinghar filed a complaint. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Chief and former Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, on Friday condemned the sexist remarks by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua, targeting the BJD's Lekhasri Samantsinghar, calling it 'extremely unfortunate and utterly unacceptable". In a long post on X, the BJD boss said, 'The derogatory remarks made by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua against a respected BJD woman leader are extremely unfortunate and utterly unacceptable. Attempting to assassinate a woman's character in public as a political response is a reflection of a perverse mentality and is aimed at suppressing women's voices. It suggests that all women should remain silent." Called out senior BJP members for their 'profound silence", the former CM said, 'Not a single leader has come forward to condemn such reprehensible remarks… the silence clearly reveals the stance of the ruling party in public." The BJD chief, whose 24-year reign as Chief Minister crashed to a halt last year, after the BJP's shock election victory, continued his attack on the BJP 'for failing to respect women", and said, 'Hearing such derogatory words from an elected representative is utterly intolerable and inhumane. It is quite rare for Odisha's political landscape to stoop to such a shameful level." — Naveen Patnaik (@Naveen_Odisha) July 3, 2025 The reference to Operation Sindoor – India's armed response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack – was particularly fierce. According to media reports, the operation had been named by PM Modi because 'sindoor' refers to the vermilion mark Hindu women wear on their forehead after marriage. Op Sindoor aimed to avenge the honour of women who lost their husbands in Pahalgam, many of whom were targeted by terrorists due to their religious identity. Samantsinghar also said the BJP's attitude towards women had led to an increase in levels of violent crime in the state. 'Your promise for women will sound hollow if you fail to take action against such misogynistic elected representatives," she said. While talking to X, BJD leader Samantsinghar condemned Khatua's remark, saying that the Constitution has enough provisions to safeguard the dignity and respect of women. 'BJP is misogynistic, anti-women and does not want women to have an equal place in society. We condemn this and will take all steps to restore women's dignity in the workplace. BJD has always been fighting for equal opportunities, safety and security for women. Calling names to any woman is highly condemnable, and we are taking this forward," she added. Dear Modi Ji @narendramodi,Please listen to your MLA from Odisha talking about women politicians. This is true blood bjp neta giving true salute to women. I know you have very competent and intelligent Odia officers in @PMOIndia and Party. Pl ask them to translate for you.… — Lekha Samantsinghar (@DrLekhaShree) July 3, 2025 Kathua has not yet responded to criticism from the BJD leaders. Samantasinghar also filed a police complaint on Friday, accusing Khatua of making derogatory remarks against her. Accompanied by senior BJD leaders, Samantasinghar visited the women's police station in Bhubaneswar and filed a complaint against the MLA from Nilgiri in Balasore district. 'Khatua has not only demeaned me but has cast aspersions on every woman of Odisha and India, as well as all the women political workers irrespective of their party affiliations. He has stooped to such a low with his utterances that it is difficult on my part to even narrate it here," she alleged in the complaint. First Published: July 04, 2025, 21:21 IST

‘No Compromise On Merit': CJI Gavai Assures 'Complete Transparency' In Collegium System

Last Updated: CJI B R Gavai assured to infuse "complete transparency" in the collegium system of appointment of judges, wherein merit will never be compromised. Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Friday assured to infuse 'complete transparency" in the collegium system of appointment of judges, wherein merit will never be compromised and all sections of society will get representation. Speaking at the Bombay High Court in an event organised by the Bombay Bar Association to honour his elevation to the highest judicial position in the country, the CJI said that since his predecessor Justice Sanjeev Khanna was the CJI, the collegium has tried to infuse more transparency in matters of appointments. The CJI was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India last month. He added that SC Justice Dipankar Datta previously at an event in Nagpur last week spoke about interference in the working of the collegium. 'I assure everyone, we will adopt a procedure of complete transparency. Merit will never be compromised. We will have representatives from all sections of society. Names of all recommended will be followed up," the CJI said. He further said that when his name was recommended in 2019 for elevation to the Supreme Court, one judge in the collegium was not in favour of the same. 'Last six years, I kept this as a secret when my name was doing rounds for SC, one of the collegium judges had some reservations," Gavai said, refusing to name the judge. This judge felt that if I am elevated, then there may be unrest among some senior lawyers in Mumbai, CJI Gavai said. 'However, several senior lawyers from the Bombay Bar Association met this judge in Delhi and told him that he was under a wrong impression," he added. 'I will always be indebted to the Bombay Bar Association as my elevation to the Supreme Court at that point of time and thereafter as CJI would never have been possible," CJI Gavai said. He emphasised that a judge must always do justice and uphold the Constitution and that he has always attempted to do so. CJI Gavai said when he was appointed as the CJI, he refused to give any interviews to the media or speak about any roadmap. 'Rather than speaking now, I felt I should let my work speak for me six months later when I retire. I do not want to make empty promises and leave room for any disappointments," he said. The CJI added that he also wants to dispel the misconception that the Supreme Court is a CJI-centric court. 'SC is a court of all judges. CJI is only the first among equals," he said. BRS flays Kharge for celebrating ‘samvidhan' while disregarding rights

HYDERABAD The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has criticised the ruling Congress party for flaying the Constitution by arresting the unemployed youth and students before and during the visit of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge to Hyderabad on Friday to celebrate 'samvidhan'. Working president of the party K.T. Rama Rao said the government action of arresting the unemployed youth and Osmania University students was a stark reminder of the Congress Government's utter disregard for democratic rights. He sought to know whether the Congress leadership including Rahul Gandhi had forgotten the job calendar, promised before the Assembly elections, after coming to power in the State. The tall claims of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy that the door of the Secretariat would always be open in the 'Indiramma Rajyam' were proved repeatedly wrong with the arrest of the unemployed youth umpteen times during the last 19 months. While several youth were arrested on Thursday ahead of Mr. Kharge's visit, those who were on way to the Secretariat and to Kharge's public meeting to explain their woes were also arrested on Friday. The Congress Government had not filled even 10,000 jobs by issuing fresh notifications and it could only complete the recruitment process for 60,000 jobs for which notifications were issued and tests were conducted during the previous BRS rule itself. He demanded that the government release all those who were arrested unconditionally. Senior leaders of the party Koppula Eshwar, S. Niranjan Reddy and S. Madhusudana Chary too condemned the arrests of unemployed youth and students. Speaking to newspersons separately, they criticised the comments of Mr. Kharge on social justice, reservation of backward classes. They alleged that the Congress government had failed to implement even one promise made as part of the SC, ST Declaration and also 42% reservation to BCs.
