‘Unacceptable': Naveen Patnaik Condemns BJP MLA's Sexist Remark Against BJD Leader
BJD Chief Naveen Patnaik condemned BJP MLA Santosh Khatua's sexist remarks against BJD's Lekhasri Samantsinghar. Patnaik criticized BJP's silence. Samantsinghar filed a complaint.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Chief and former Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, on Friday condemned the sexist remarks by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua, targeting the BJD's Lekhasri Samantsinghar, calling it 'extremely unfortunate and utterly unacceptable".
In a long post on X, the BJD boss said, 'The derogatory remarks made by BJP MLA Santosh Khatua against a respected BJD woman leader are extremely unfortunate and utterly unacceptable. Attempting to assassinate a woman's character in public as a political response is a reflection of a perverse mentality and is aimed at suppressing women's voices. It suggests that all women should remain silent."
Called out senior BJP members for their 'profound silence", the former CM said, 'Not a single leader has come forward to condemn such reprehensible remarks… the silence clearly reveals the stance of the ruling party in public."
The BJD chief, whose 24-year reign as Chief Minister crashed to a halt last year, after the BJP's shock election victory, continued his attack on the BJP 'for failing to respect women", and said, 'Hearing such derogatory words from an elected representative is utterly intolerable and inhumane. It is quite rare for Odisha's political landscape to stoop to such a shameful level."

The reference to Operation Sindoor – India's armed response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack – was particularly fierce. According to media reports, the operation had been named by PM Modi because 'sindoor' refers to the vermilion mark Hindu women wear on their forehead after marriage.
Op Sindoor aimed to avenge the honour of women who lost their husbands in Pahalgam, many of whom were targeted by terrorists due to their religious identity.
Samantsinghar also said the BJP's attitude towards women had led to an increase in levels of violent crime in the state. 'Your promise for women will sound hollow if you fail to take action against such misogynistic elected representatives," she said.
While talking to X, BJD leader Samantsinghar condemned Khatua's remark, saying that the Constitution has enough provisions to safeguard the dignity and respect of women. 'BJP is misogynistic, anti-women and does not want women to have an equal place in society. We condemn this and will take all steps to restore women's dignity in the workplace. BJD has always been fighting for equal opportunities, safety and security for women. Calling names to any woman is highly condemnable, and we are taking this forward," she added.
Dear Modi Ji @narendramodi,Please listen to your MLA from Odisha talking about women politicians. This is true blood bjp neta giving true salute to women. I know you have very competent and intelligent Odia officers in @PMOIndia and Party. Pl ask them to translate for you.… pic.twitter.com/l1f83N1BUO

Kathua has not yet responded to criticism from the BJD leaders.
Samantasinghar also filed a police complaint on Friday, accusing Khatua of making derogatory remarks against her.
Accompanied by senior BJD leaders, Samantasinghar visited the women's police station in Bhubaneswar and filed a complaint against the MLA from Nilgiri in Balasore district.
'Khatua has not only demeaned me but has cast aspersions on every woman of Odisha and India, as well as all the women political workers irrespective of their party affiliations. He has stooped to such a low with his utterances that it is difficult on my part to even narrate it here," she alleged in the complaint.

Not against Hindi, just its imposition: Uddhav Sena clarifies, distances from Stalin's stand
A day after estranged cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray came together to celebrate their victory over the Maharashtra government's rollback of Hindi as a third language from Classes I to V, the Uddhav Sena on Sunday sought to downplay Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's support, clarifying that their opposition is strictly limited to the imposition of Hindi in primary schools. Referring to the Mumbai rally led by Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, Stalin had said, "The language struggle waged by the DMK and the people of Tamil Nadu has now crossed borders and sparked similar protests in Maharashtra." He also accused the BJP-led Centre of using education funding as a pressure tactic. "The BJP, which disregards the law, threatens to allocate funds only if Tamil Nadu schools agree to teach Hindi as the third language," Stalin alleged. The rally in Mumbai, titled 'Awaaz Marathicha,' marked a rare reunion of cousins Uddhav and Raj Thackeray on the same stage after nearly two decades. The protest came in the wake of the Maharashtra government's decision to withdraw two Government Resolutions that had made Hindi a compulsory third language in primary schools. The rollback followed strong opposition from the Shiv Sena (UBT), MNS, and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction).

'No requirement': Centre after news agency Reuters' X account witheld in India
The Centre has responded to social media platform X blocking the account of news agency Reuters in India, saying that it is a mistake on the part of the Elon Musk-owned company. The government had legally demanded the withholding of the Reuters X account and several others during Operation Sindoor in May(X) 'There is no requirement from the Government of India to withhold Reuters handle. We are continuously working with X to resolve the problem,' a government spokesperson said. The government has asked X to explain the ban and has asked the company to reverse it Sources quoted in a PTI news agency report said the government had legally demanded the withholding of the Reuters X account and several others during Operation Sindoor in May. While many were withheld, Reuters remained accessible. The social media giant seems to have acted on that request and blocked Reuters' X handle in India. Since the issue isn't relevant now, the government has asked X to explain the blocking and lift the embargo. "An order was issued on May 7 (during Operation Sindoor) but it was not enforced. X seems to have enforced that order now which is a mistake on their part. Government has reached out to X for resolving it at the earliest," PTI quoted an official source as saying. Are all Reuters handles withheld in India? Reuters's official X handle, along with Reuters World, remains inaccessible in India, while all the affiliated handles on the social media platform, such as Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Asia, and Reuters China, can be accessed. X users attempting to access the main account can see a message that reads: "Account withheld. @ Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand." The social media company has an explainer about such messages on its help center page titled "About country withheld content". The message means X was compelled to withhold the entire account specified or posts in response to a valid legal demand, such as a court order or local laws.

TMC MP Mahua Moitra moves SC against EC's revision of electoral rolls in Bihar
Trinamool Congress leader and Member of Parliament Mahua Moitra has moved the Supreme Court challenging an order of the Election Commission of India for special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. TMC leader Mahua Moitra during the launch of a book in Delhi in May.(PTI) In her plea, Moitra said she seeks setting aside of the order dated June 24 under which Special Intensive Revision (SIR) is being conducted in alleged violation of various provisions of the Constitution. "The present writ petition has been filed in public interest under Article 32 of the Constitution seeking setting aside of order dated 24.06.2025 issued by Election Commission of India under which SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar is being conducted in violation of Articles 14, 19(1)(a), 21, 325, 328 of the Constitution and provisions of Representation of People (RP) Act, 1950 and Registration of Electors (RER) Rules, 1960 which, if not set aside, can lead to large-scale disenfranchisement of eligible voters in the country thereby undermining democracy and free and fair elections," it submitted. Moitra further sought a direction from the apex court to restrain the Election Commission of India from issuing similar orders for SIR of electoral rolls in other states of the country. "It is submitted that it is for the very first time in the country that such an exercise is being conducted by ECI, where electors whose names are already there in electoral rolls and who have already voted multiple times in are being asked to prove their eligibility," the plea filed through advocate Neha Rathi said. The plea said "the impugned SIR order requires the inclusion or retention of a voter's name in the electoral roll upon production of citizenship documents, including proof of citizenship of either or both parents, failing which the voter is at risk of requirement is ultra vires Article 326 and introduces extraneous qualifications not contemplated by the Constitution of the RP Act 1950.' A similar plea has also been filed by NGO Association of Democratic Reforms challenging the poll panel's direction for SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar. The EC on June 24 issued instructions to carry out an SIR in Bihar, apparently to weed out ineligible names and ensure only eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll. Bihar goes to polls later this year. The NGO has also sought setting aside of the order and communication, arguing that it violates Articles 14, 19, 21, 325, and 326 of the Constitution, as well as provisions of the Representation of People's Act, 1950, and Rule 21A of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. The NGO's plea filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan said the EC order "can arbitrarily and without due process" disenfranchise lakhs of voters and disrupt free and fair elections. "That the documentation requirements of the directive, lack of due process as well as the unreasonably short timeline for the said Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Roll in Bihar further make this exercise bound to result in removal of names of lakhs of genuine voters from electoral rolls leading to their disenfranchisement," the plea said. The last such revision in Bihar was conducted in 2003. According to the EC, the exercise was necessitated by rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths, and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants. It said with the exercise, it wants to ensure the integrity and preparation of error-free electoral rolls. The SIR is being conducted by booth officers, who are conducting a house-to-house survey for verification. The EC said it will scrupulously adhere to the constitutional and legal provisions as laid down in Article 326 of the Constitution and Section 16 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, in carrying out the revision. Several other civil society organisations like PUCL and activists like Yogendra Yadav have approached the top court against the ECI's direction.
