Luigi Mangione musical sells out in San Francisco, producers eye national tour after smash debut

Fox News6 days ago
A San Francisco musical about Luigi Mangione, charged with the 2024 assassination of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, might go national as the show continues to sell out.
The show, entitled, "Luigi: The Musical," is a "satirical prison comedy inspired by the bizarre true story of three high-profile inmates housed together at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn," according to the production's website.
Mangione is depicted along with Sean "Diddy" Combs, who was recently acquitted of racketeering and sex trafficking charges, and Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of FTX who was sentenced to 25 years in prison for a multi-billion dollar fraud.
The three have reportedly been held in the same jail, the Metropolitan Detention Center, in Brooklyn, New York, but reports suggest Bankman-Fried was recently transferred to a different facility in California.
The website for the production features an announcement that it has been "Extended by popular demand – August 6 show added after sell-out run," and invites patrons to purchase tickets for the fifth show that was added.
Nova Bradford, head writer and director of the show, was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter saying that the show's popularity has a lot to say about the level of interest society has in Mangione, as well as Bankman-Fried and Combs.
"There is this interesting thing that these three men represent three pillars of society that people have lost a lot of trust in in recent years, including healthcare, Hollywood and the whole tech/VC/finance ecosystem," Bradford said.
"And so what we want to explore more with the show is not about the individual actions of these actual people, but more so the place that these figures are occupying in the public consciousness and what it means about us when we've lost so much trust in institutions that are supposed to support us," she added.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that the show was originally set to be performed at Taylor Street Theater in San Francisco, which seats 49 people, but was moved to The Independent, which seats 350 people.
The musical's architects are reportedly trying to get it into the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, held in August, as well as considering adding shows in Los Angeles and New York, per The Hollywood Reporter.
"Our hope is that regardless of someone's worldview, they'll leave the show with more questions than they had at the beginning," Bradford said.

Reneé Rapp Is Anything but 'Shy' with 'Late Show 'Performance as She Climbs Out of a Window in Heels — Watch!

The 'Mean Girls' star's album 'Bite Me' is now available to streamNEED TO KNOW Reneé Rapp's dramatic rendition of "Shy" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is anything but that The Mean Girls actress' dramatic performance was New York City-coded from the exposed brick set and casual fire escape acrobatics Her new album Bite Me is available to stream, and she will embark on her tour in support of it in SeptemberReneé Rapp is anything but shy in her latest performance. The Mean Girls star appeared on the Thursday, July 31 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform "Shy" from her sophomore album Bite Me. Rapp, 25, sings on a set decorated like a small apartment before leaning backwards out of a brick window and gracefully climbing to the fire escape — while still carrying a tune and wearing heels. "Don't handle me with care / When you're pullin' my hair / Baby, ruin my life," she croons. "I want it bad, I swear / That I'm really not scared / I'm just a little bit shy." "Shy" appears on Rapp's new album Bite Me, which she announced in May and came out on Friday, Aug. 1. She spoke about how her mom manifested her becoming a pop star during an appearance on Amy Poehler's podcast Good Hang with Amy Poehler in May, thanks to her name's alliteration. "My mom chose my first and last name to be, well, okay, arguably chose my first and last name to both have [two letter R's]," she recalled. "She was like, 'Alliteration, just in case she wants to be a pop star' before I was born." Though Rapp admitted that her mom's decision was "conceited," she is "obsessed with the way [her mother] did it." "I'm like, thank you, God," she added. Poehler, 53, was impressed with how things came to be. "She gave you a pop star name just in case, because Reneé Rapp is a huge pop star name," the Parks and Recreation star said. Rapp, who released her album Snow Angel in August 2023, told PEOPLE about the inspiration behind the project. "All the songs I write obviously are about things that I've been through personally, but I think that any relationship I've ever had in my life is all culminated into one on this project and in these songs," she said at the time. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "I love relationships. I love so hard. I am very protective of the people that I love. I'm very protective of myself, and all of these situations were taken from relationships that I had, whether they be good or bad." She also said that Snow Angel featured a "really mature version of myself" with "a little more bite." "I think that a lot of my EP thematically had more of a, 'Oh, no, this is what's happening to me," Rapp said. "This is what I'm going through' thing, which is great, but I think that Snow Angel is a bit more resilient and it's a bit more matter of fact and has a little bit more bite." Up next for the Sex Lives of College Girls actress is a tour through North America in support of her latest album. Kicking off on Sept. 23, Rapp will stop in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta and Toronto, among other cities, through Oct. 29. Bite Me is available to stream. Suspect in 2023 fatal Bronx car wash hit-and-run charged with manslaughter

A suspect in a fatal hit-and-run at a New York City car wash has been arrested more than two years after the accident killed an employee at the 24-hour business. Trina Bryant was arrested Wednesday after the NYPD said she struck and killed Felix Thomas Bontia in the Bronx in February 2023. She pled not guilty to an 11-count indictment charging her with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and more. According to police, Bryant was driving a Ford Escape with Georgia plates when it veered into a bus lane and struck a Toyota RAV4 that Bontia was drying off on Webster Avenue near 168th Street in the borough's Concourse Village section. Bontia was pinned between the cars and did not survive. Investigators at the time said there were two women in the Ford Escape, the driver and a front-seat passenger, who drove a short distance away before they fled on foot. The accident, which occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, was captured on surveillance video. Bontia worked at the car wash for about a year while his family was back home in Mexico, CBS News New York reported at the time. His friends and coworkers in the city said they called him Benito Felix. The driver in the RAV4 was hospitalized with minor injuries.
