Irish school historical sex abuse claims to be examined by commission
Announcing the commission on Tuesday, Irish Minister for Education and Youth Helen McEntee said the revelations of the report of the scoping inquiry were "devastating" and the survivors' accounts of their experiences had a "profound impact". She added it was clear that survivors wanted accountability and that "because of their courage, a light has been shone on a dark period of Irish history".The commission will be able to examine the handling of sexual abuse in all types of schools. It will start preliminary work in the coming months and will then seek initial expressions of interest from people who may wish to provide information to it.McEntee said when this part of the process began it would be widely advertised.
'Survivors want accountability'
McEntee said more work was required in relation to setting up a redress scheme for survivors. She said if it was set up it would be funded by religious orders and others who were accountable for abuse. The chairman of the commission will be supported by a team of commissioners. One commissioner will look at the investigation into the handling of sexual abuse claims in religious schools, which will continue the work of the scoping inquiry. The second commissioner will start work on the investigation into sexual abuse at non-religious run schools.A third commissioner will focus solely on a non-adversarial survivor engagement forum.

FBI launches probes into former FBI director, ex-CIA director, Fox News reports
WASHINGTON, July 8 (Reuters) - The FBI launched criminal probes into former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI director James Comey, Fox News Digital reported on Tuesday, citing sources. These probes are over alleged wrongdoing related to past government investigations about claims of Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections in which President Donald Trump defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the news report said. The FBI, the CIA and the Justice Department had no immediate comment. Reuters has not independently verified the probes. The scope of the criminal investigations into Brennan and Comey was unclear, the report added. A criminal investigation does not necessarily result in charges. Fox said its sources were from the Justice Department but did not specify the number of sources. A CIA review released last week found flaws in the production of a U.S. intelligence assessment that Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to sway the 2016 U.S. presidential vote to Trump, but it did not contest that conclusion.

Kneecap slam John Swinney during Glasgow gig after being axed by TRNSMT
Kneecap has bashed John Swinney during their Glasgow O2 Academy gig where police and sniffer dogs scoured their dressing room. Kneecap has hit out at First Minister John Swinney during their sold-out performance in Glasgow after being axed from TRNSMT. Kneecap, formed of Mo Chara - who was recently charged with a terror offence - Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, were originally billed to headline the King Tut's stage on Friday at the TRNSMT Festival, however they were dropped from the lineup at the end of May over safety concerns by Police Scotland. Instead, they headlined the city's O2 Academy tonight - with the show selling out in 80 seconds. In May, Scotland's First Minister John Swinney called for TRNSMT to cancel the performance on July 11, saying that 'organisers of TRNSMT have got to consider that issue.' Swinney also said: "It would be unacceptable to perform on such a stage given the fact their comments are so beyond the pale." It only took Kneecap 10 minutes into the show to address the issue, reports the BBC. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, asked the crowd "What's your first minister's name?" before swearing and saying: "They stopped us playing TRNSMT but they can't stop us playing Glasgow." DF Concerts took the decision to remove the rappers from the TRNSMT line-up after police raised safety concerns. Kneecap noted that they did not believe the TRNSMT cancellation was the festival's fault, before leading a chant against Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after he called for the band to be dropped from Glastonbury. Fans came to the gig daunting Celtic tops and waving the Irish Tricolour. Mr Ó hAnnaidh later criticised Israel but noted he meant "the government, not the people." Police and sniffer dogs have also been caught scouring Kneecap's dressing room before the Irish rap trio's sold-out Glasgow gig. Prior to the gig, officers and sniffer dogs were recorded and posted on Kneecap's Instagram story searching their dressing room. The caption of the video said: "Your sniffer dogs are..." The band arrived at the venue amidst a sea of Palestine flags from Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaigners. Pictures showed Naoise Ó Cairealláin, also known as Móglaí Bap, entering the building wearing a retro-remake version of Celtic's iconic 1996 bumblebee shirt. While being ushered into the venue, Naoise Ó Cairealláin could be seen carrying a leaflet calling for the charges against his bandmate to be dropped and for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to be arrested. Mo Chara was charged with brandishing a flag backing banned militant group Hezbollah at a gig in November 2024. He appeared in Westminster Magistrates' Court last month as a result and was released on an unconditional bail. The charge related to an incident after the band's O2 Forum show in Kentish Town, London. However, the band has branded the case against the musician as a "witch hunt". Police also said they are investigating Kneecap's Sunday performance at Glastonbury, after their set was filled with expletives and calls to "free Palestine" and "f*** Keir Starmer". However, the band pointed out that they did not call for a riot to take place. Kneecap previously took legal action against the then UK Conservative government after they blocked them from receiving a £15,000 funding award to support UK-registered artists in global markets. However, a court hearing sided with the group and awarded them £14,250. There are three other artists - Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and SZA - who are also set to perform at various locations across Glasgow tonight, and Police Scotland intend to keep everyone safe throughout all three gigs, including Kneecap's performance. Superintendent Paul Douglas stated: "We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday, 7 July, 2025." 'A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow," he continued. What's on the menu at the state banquet?
French chef Raymond Blanc has collaborated with the Royal Household to help create Tuesday's State Banquet menu. Blanc, who was recently made an Ambassador for the King's Foundation, is cooking the first course and dessert in a partnership described by Buckingham Palace as being 'in the spirit of the Entente Cordiale'. Around 160 guests are attending the glittering banquet in St George's Hall at Windsor Castle, which has not hosted a State Visit since 2014 when Irish President Michael D Higgins travelled to the UK. The menu, which is written in French as is the custom for State Banquets, includes: Selection of Pre-Dinner Canapes A Selection of Tender Summer Vegetables from the Gardens of Le Manoir with Sage, Raw Tomato and Extra Virgin Olive Oil Dressing Supreme of Rhug Estate Chicken with Norfolk Asparagus and Tarragon Cream Le Cassis Iced Blackcurrant Parfait on a Blackcurrant-soaked Sponge with Elderflower Jelly Guests each have five glasses, and the wine list includes Domaine Evremond, Classic Cuvee, Edition I, NV; Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Etienne Sauzet, 2022; Chateau Haut-Brion; 1er Grand Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan, 1996; Louis Roederer, Carte Blanche, NV. The English sparkling wine will be used for the toast. Following dinner, guests will be served Taylor's 1977 Vintage Port and a 1948 Grande Champagne Cognac by Frapin & Co. The drinks were selected to reflect the years in which President Macron and the King were born. A special cocktail has also been created for the occasion. The 'L'entente' combines British gin with lemon curd and French pastis. It is also garnished with dried French cornflowers and English roses. It has taken almost a week to construct and lay the 50-metre table for Tuesday's banquet, which will be lit by candlelight once the evening light fades. It is adorned with hand-picked and seasonal flowers from the gardens at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, along with flowers and lavender from The Savill Garden in Windsor Great Park, which have been arranged in silver-gilt centrepieces taken from the Grand Service. Guests will move to the Music Room for a performance by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales following the banquet. Of the artists performing, flautist, Matthew Featherstone, is a British-French national and cellist, Raphael Lang, is British-American but was born and raised in Paris.
