UAE: From rescue radar to life detector, Dubai Police showcase latest gadgets

Khaleej Times09-04-2025

From sonic scanner capable of detecting signs of life beneath the rubble of a collapsed structure, to 360° search camera, to ATV or all-terrain vehicle fitted with firefighting and rescue tools, and rescue drones with thermal imaging and navigational systems, Dubai Police are not only showcasing their latest rescue equipment but — more importantly — assuring the public that 'they are ready to serve and save anyone' under any circumstances.
Dubai Police displayed their latest rescue equipment and technology at the two-day World Crisis and Management Summit (WCEMS) in Abu Dhabi.
Speaking to Khaleej Times on Wednesday, Hassan Al Maeeni, an officer from Dubai Police elite Search and Rescue brigade, said their objective was to showcase their 'commitment to emergency preparedness and readiness to respond to any types of crises and disasters.'
Among the technologies and advanced equipment displayed by Dubai Police were:
Life-saver radar
Al Maeeni described the rescue radar as a life saver as it can help find survivors buried underneath a rubble up to 10 metres deep. 'It can be easily deployed and it works in any type of weather and environment. It is also water-proof.'
It has been proven as a game-changer in search and rescue operations in disaster sites such as landslides, earthquakes and collapsed buildings.
'The rescue radar is placed on the surface of a rubble and the operator will use a monitor to control the customised sensors that are capable of capturing the body's natural temperature,' Al Maeeni explained to Khaleej Times.
All-seeing camera
The 360° search camera serves as the 'all-seeing eye' of emergency responders during rescue operations. 'They can searching through a rubble by inserting the camera. It can also communicate with the victim as it has a mic,' said Al Maeeni.
'The camera can be used in confined spaces and even dark areas as it has built-in LED lights,' he noted, adding: 'The camera also records the whole rescue operation.'
The life detector, meanwhile, is an acoustic device that senses life in disaster zones. 'It can be attached to any surface, and using the six sensors, will hear any movement and identify any survivors buried underneath a collapsed structure,' said Al Maeeni.
He added: 'The sensors — all six of them — are strategically placed in a certain rescue zone to detect auditory cues and help the rescue team pinpoint the location of any survivor. It also transmits real-time data and gives as an opportunity to communicate with the survivor.
Powered for rugged terrain
When it comes to rescuing someone in a rugged terrain, including undulating sand dunes, the Can-Am ATV serves as the go-to vehicle. Al Maeeni said the vehicle drastically reduces equipment switchover as the ATV is specially fitted with firefighting and rescue tools.
'It allows us to penetrate deeper into disaster zones, making on-site rescues more efficient,' he noted, adding: 'Officers operating are also highly skilled who can perform first aid.'
Meanwhile, a rescue drone can go along with the ATV, especially at night as the drone is equipped with thermal imaging, lights, and navigation aids to locate victims in inaccessible areas.

Dubai: How autonomous cars can help cut down accidents, protect pedestrians

As autonomous vehicle technology advances, it's not just drivers who stand to benefit. Traffic authorities, police departments, and decision-makers are also eyeing the promise of safer, smarter roads. "Human error accounts for nearly 90 per cent of road crashes," said Abdulla Alfalasi, Traffic Expert at Dubai Police H.Q. "Distraction, fatigue, and poor decision-making are major contributors, and that's where autonomous systems can step in." Alfalasi outlined several critical scenarios in which human factors lead to serious accidents. These include speeding, aggressive driving, and especially distracted driving, such as using a mobile phone, eating, or adjusting in-car systems. 'Rear-end collisions, for example, are often linked to driver distraction,' he stated on the final day of the World Police Summit, which ran from May 13 to 15 in Dubai. Fatigue, another leading cause of crashes, was also highlighted. Alfalasi explained how tired drivers are prone to micro-sleep episodes and reduced alertness, which compromise reaction time and decision-making. 'In many cases, drivers may not even realise how impaired they are until it's too late,' he added. He also touched on the impact of psychological stress, health conditions, medication, and inexperience, all of which can contribute to misjudgments behind the wheel. 'Some drivers underestimate risks, or overcorrect in dangerous situations, especially when weather conditions are poor,' Alfalasi said. But autonomous vehicles, he argued, offer a promising path forward. Referencing the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) classification system, Alfalasi explained that autonomous driving is categorised from Level 0 (no automation) to Level 5 (full automation). Today, many vehicles already operate at Level 2 or Level 3, where driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane-centering are active, and testing is underway for Level 4 systems, especially in autonomous taxis. 'What makes this technology so promising is its ability to address the core issue: the human element,' Alfalasi said. 'By reducing reliance on human input, we also reduce the potential for human mistakes.' Connectivity was another key point in his presentation. Alfalasi described how V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) and V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) communication allow cars to share information in real-time, adjusting speeds, avoiding collisions, and responding instantly to hazards. These capabilities not only help drivers but also support emergency responders and traffic control centres in managing incidents more effectively. 'Autonomous vehicles don't just drive, they talk to the road, to other vehicles, and to the systems that manage our cities,' he said. 'This integration is essential for creating smarter, safer urban environments.' Beyond safety, Alfalasi emphasised the value of autonomous vehicles as data-gathering tools. With real-time information on traffic patterns, risk zones, and road usage, authorities and policymakers can make more informed decisions about infrastructure and enforcement. Finally, he stressed the benefits for vulnerable road users. 'Autonomous cars are equipped with advanced sensors that can detect pedestrians and cyclists more accurately than the average driver, helping to give them the right of way and avoid collisions,' he said. He also underscored the importance of continuing to invest in the development and deployment of autonomous technologies. 'This isn't just about convenience,' he said. 'It's about saving lives, supporting our police and road safety teams, and building a future where traffic crashes are the exception, not the rule.'

UAE: ChatGPT down for users amid global outage

Users in the UAE reported issued while using ChatGPT as thousands across the globe were hit with an OpenAI outage on Tuesday, as per information on data-tracking website Downdetector. From the reported issues globally, around 93% of users faced problems while using ChatGPT; seven per cent had issues while using the application and a percentage of users were struggling while trying to log into the site. The technical issues peaked at 1.30pm, when most users reported issues. At 2.45pm, reports had gone down but were still high around the world. In the UAE, reports peaked at 1.40pm and have been ongoing until now. Around 60% of Emirates' users faced issues while trying to use the website; 38 per cent of individuals had issues while logging in and two per cent of users had issues with ChatGPT. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Sarah K., a Dubai resident, said she was trying to compile her university notes but was unable to do so. "I have an assignment due at 5pm and just wanted to compile the notes together, but the page is unresponsive. It feel weird to not get a response from ChatGPT," said the 19-year-old. Earlier this year, ChatGPT removed the sign up option for users, making it simpler for individuals to log in. OpenAI initially launched the search engine to paid subscribers. It soon made it accessible to all users by rolling it out in the same year. Users still required an account to access it, as without one it would only allow for an allocated number of tries for a certain duration. This move is likely to put pressure on search engines like Google and Bing as the platform will now be easily accessible to all.
