Collin Morikawa Gets Real on Aldrich Potgieter's Insane Driving Ability at Rocket Classic
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The PGA Tour is in Detroit this week for the Rocket Classic (formerly Rocket Mortgage Classic). While several top-ranked players decided to either skip this event, or withdraw in droves, there were still some amazing golfers in the field. One such player is World No. 5, Collin Morikawa, who has had a rough go with media lately. Morikawa found himself in contention heading into the weekend at the Detroit Golf Club after signing for an 8-under 64 on Friday. Unfortunately for the 2-time major champion, he was unable to keep that momentum into his third round. Morikawa carded a 4-under 78, which on most courses, is really solid. But with the course record being set not once, but twice, this week, he fell a few shots behind South African Aldrich Potgieter. (Photo by) MorePotgieter, not Rory McIlroy, is the longest driver of the golf ball on the PGA Tour. Following his round on Saturday, Morikawa was asked his thoughts on Potgieter's ability to drive the ball. "I've never seen it in person, I just see the numbers that he produces," Morikawa said. "He hits it very, very far." He averages 326.6 yards per drive, six yards farther than McIlroy. Yet, the youngster is still in search of his first PGA Tour victory. Aldrich Potgieter Knocking on PGA Tour Door He entered Sunday's final round with a two shot lead. But there were more than 25 golfers within four shots, including Morikawa. Morikawa came out hot, birdieing two of his first three holes. However, he would cool down and finish at 4-under for the day, entering the clubhouse at 19-under. That was never going to be enough this week. Meanwhile, Potgieter has gone back and forth with Chris Kirk, Jake Knapp, and a few others taking turns leading the Rocket Classic. The South African golfer struggled early on Sunday. He bogeyed two of his first five holes, falling three back of the lead. Yet, he played the next nine holes at 4-under to take a one-shot lead. An ill-timed bogey on the par-3 15th cost him dearly, though. As he plays the 18th hole, Potgieter is tied at 22-under with Kirk and Max Greyserman. Will Potgieter get his first PGA Tour victory? We'll know within the next half hour. More Golf: Michael Jordan Trolls Giants Legend Lawrence Taylor on Golf Course

Padraig Harrington Shows Stones, Fends Off Stewart Cink for U.S. Senior Open Title
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The PGA Tour Champions saw a dramatic finish this week at the U.S. Senior Open, the fourth of five majors this season. In what proved to be a wild, back and forth day at the Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs, CO, Padraig Harrington prevailed by one shot over Stewart Cink. It was Harrington's second career U.S. Senior Open win. But it did not come easy. There were six lead changes during Sunday's final round, as Cink went tit for tat with the Irishman. (Photo by) MoreHarrington and Cink played all four rounds together, which is not very common. But the two have played together for years, including on the PGA Tour. Earlier in the week, the 3-time major champion was in the news for something other than his play. Harrington had words with an NBC Analyst, prompting rabid reactions online. But it was his play that stole the show on Sunday. Harrington Shows Clutch Gene As both Harrington and Cink approached the 18th tee on Sunday, the former held a one-shot lead at 11-under, and had the honors. He split the fairway, putting a bit of pressure on Cink to answer, which he did in spades. He outdrove the 2-time U.S. Senior Open champion, and put himself in prime position for his approach. That put the pressure back on Harrington to deliver, and that he did. CLUTCH! Padraig Harrington 🇮🇪 is in prime position at @TheBroadmoor! — USGA (@USGA) June 29, 2025 The 53-year-old fan favorite showed his clutch gene. He stuck his approach shot inside 10 feet. That forced Cink to have to some up with something special. But the second-place finisher was unable to do so, as his approach failed to stay on the top level and rolled more than 30 feet from the hole. That allowed Harrington to easily two-putt for another championship. With the win, he joined some truly exclusive company. Harrington is now only the third golfer ever to win multiple Open Championships and U.S. Senior Opens. The others are true legends of the game: Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Harrington won three majors while playing on the PGA Tour, two of which came in 2008: The PGA Championship and Open Championship. That win overseas was his second as he defended his crown, which he won at Carnoustie in 2007. Since joining the Senior Circuit, he captured the 2022 U.S. Senior Open, while also winning the Charles Schwab Cup that year. The Irish pro is known for his social media presence, as he loves posting tutorials for Sunday golfers. But this Sunday, he proved that he can still play the game at an elite level. PGA Tour: 2 players set bonkers scoring record at Rocket Classic
The post PGA Tour: 2 players set bonkers scoring record at Rocket Classic appeared first on ClutchPoints. Aldrich Potgieter and Kevin Roy made quite the splash at the Rocket Classic, both kicking off the tournament with record-breaking rounds. On Thursday, Potgieter, a rising star from the PGA Tour, nearly walked off the ninth green with a solo lead, but a missed 12-foot birdie putt left him tied with Roy at the top of the leaderboard. They both opened the 2025 tournament at Detroit Golf Club with impressive 10-under 62s, setting a new 18-hole scoring record for the event, according to the PGA Tour. Advertisement Both players enjoyed bogey-free rounds, racking up eight birdies and an eagle each. The 20-year-old South African rookie, Potgieter, dazzled on the front nine, shooting a remarkable 7-under 29 to kick off his day. Meanwhile, Roy finished strong, nailing a 30-foot chip-in for eagle at the par-5 17th. 'Just one of those days everything was clicking,' Roy shared after the round. Stellar performances were expected, given the ideal scoring conditions. Rain earlier in the week had softened the course, making the typically generous greens even more inviting. Since joining the PGA Tour schedule in 2019, Detroit Golf Club has consistently been one of the most scoreable venues. 'It was pretty easy,' said Andrew Putnam, who shot a solid 64. Not too far behind the leaders, Min Woo Lee, Max Greyserman, and Mark Hubbard all finished with 9-under 63s, tying the previous tournament scoring record. Two-time major champion Zach Johnson was part of a group of seven players sitting at 8-under. Lee, who recently faced a challenging stretch that included the U.S. Open and the Memorial, praised the course setup. 'Hopefully, the PGA Tour can have more courses like this. It would be a bit more fun and less stressful,' Lee remarked. For Potgieter and Roy, getting off to a strong start is crucial during this key stretch of the season. Potgieter kicked off the week sitting at No. 73 in the FedEx Cup standings, while Roy was at No. 100. Both players are in a race to secure full status for the upcoming season and possibly qualify for some elevated events. 'That's probably the biggest goal this year,' Potgieter shared with reporters after his round at the event. Advertisement With a crowded leaderboard and several top-50 players in the mix, including a frustrated Collin Morikawa and Keegan Bradley, the pair will need to keep up their momentum over the next three rounds to remain in the hunt.
