Roman Kemp says it 'really stresses me out' as he opens up about rare disability
TV presenter Roman Kemp has revealed he is grappling with a little-known disability that causes him significant stress. The One Show host disclosed his struggle with dyscalculia, a specific condition affecting a person's ability to comprehend numbers and mathematical concepts.
During the latest episode of his podcast You About?, which he co-hosts with singer Tom Grennan, the duo discussed their personal lives and methods they use to decrease stress.
Despite not being a big spender, Roman confessed that checking his bank account is one of his biggest stresses.
He also shared that his preferred method of relaxation is using a lavender-scented eye mask. The star explained how his stress stems from his dyscalculia: "I think it's because I've got that f*****g dyscalculia stuff."
He further explained how the condition impacts him: "When I think about numbers, the numbers jumble up in the air for me and I can't see it."
Roman, son of actor and singer Martin Kemp, added: "It just feels like someone's throwing them up in the air and it's scrambling everything. That's exactly how I feel about numbers. And so it really, really stresses me out."
According to the British Dyslexic Association, dyscalculia affects approximately 5 to 6% of people in the UK, equating to around four million individuals nationwide.
According to the National Numeracy Charity: "Dyscalculia is a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers which can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics. It will be unexpected in relation to age, level of education and experience and occurs across all ages and abilities."
Earlier in the podcast, Roman also revealed how his "diary" causes him stress, admitting that he'll only ever check it "the day before" he is due to do something.
Beyond discussing his battles with dyscalculia, Roman has emerged as one of broadcasting's most familiar faces in recent years.
Following his start at Capital Radio, he departed the programme last year after seven years presenting its breakfast show.
He has since made the switch from radio to television, regularly appearing with the likes of Alex Jones, Ronan Keating and Lauren Laverne on the One Show sofa.
However, one of his earliest TV appearances saw him secure third place in I'm A Celebrity back in 2019, before Jacqueline Jossa claimed victory. More recently, he also represented England team in this year's Soccer Aid.
Many will also recognise Roman from his powerful documentaries exploring mental health, including the 2021 BBC release Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency. He is also set to announce a new country-wide mental health initiative in August.

Rochelle Humes parties with Myleene Klass' ex-husband after cheating claim
Rochelle Humes has shared photos on holiday with Myleene Klass' ex-husband Graham Quinn days after the star accused him of cheating. Last week I'm A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! star Myleene, 47, revealed that she once caught her ex about to have sex with a celebrity on her birthday. The TV presenter shares two daughters with the Irish bodyguard, whom she was married to for just six months, splitting after a decade together. However, when speaking about their relationship during a recent podcast interview, Myleene revealed that she once caught him about to sleep with a 'famous person' while in her own home for her birthday. A few days on, The Saturdays star Rochelle has posted snaps on holiday to Ibiza with husband Marvin Humes, 40. During the trip to celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary, the couple were joined by friends, including Graham, 47. In one photo Marvin was photographed smiling at a table in a restaurant, posing with Graham and two other friends. Captioning the post, which also included a string of photos of the group of friends partying and relaxing by the pool, Rochelle wrote: '72 hours in Ibiza…sun, sea, belly laughing, questionable dance moves and spicy margs that tasted better than our decisions. Our annual non-negotiable child free trip with old friends who remind you who you are. Sore heads all round today but ironically my battery feels recharged! Just what I needed. Happy 13 my love @marvinhumes. What a way to celebrate.' Graham is an old friend of Marvin's and used to manage his band JLS after they placed second on The X Factor in 2008. During her interview with Paul Brunson on the We Need To Talk podcast, Myleene spoke about walking in on her husband in an intimate moment with 'a famous person'. She described how the pair were taking off each other's clothes and immediately tried to claim that it wasn't what it looked like. 'I'm in my house, it's my party. They weren't having sex, but they were unzipping each other,' she explained before adding the pair tried to downplay what she'd seen. In shock, Myleene said she then 'kicked everyone out of the party, including his mum and dad'. 'They went back to Ireland and his dad said: 'He doesn't get it from me'. 'I was like 'Ok'. I remember thinking that was quite a weird thing to say.' Myleene, who is now married to PR guru Simon Motson, said that Graham later blamed the 'drink'. Although she refused to name the woman involved, Myleene said that 'for a long time it was very difficult to see their life'. 'My life literally just broke apart very, very publicly. And their life, they've managed to continue building a family brand on it and it felt so difficult for a long time.' Myleene and Graham met in 2001 when he was the bodyguard for her band Hear'Say. They welcomed daughter Ava in 2007 and Hero in 2011. The same year the couple got married but split soon after. Myleene has said that for 12 years she raised her children as a single parent, emotionally and financially. Graham has lived out of the spotlight since his split from Myleene, however in 2020 he posted a lengthy statement on Twitter calling out his ex-wife and claiming he had been blocked from seeing their daughters for seven years. More Trending In a series of posts, Graham said he was a 'private and loyal person' and would 'always put our daughters first'. 'The breakdown of our relationship should have never been in the public eye…we simply grew apart and neither of us was happy.' Myleene went on to meet her current partner Simon in 2015, with the couple welcoming their son Apollo four years later. Got a story? Roman Kemp shares heartbreaking message to friend on fifth anniversary of death
Roman Kemp has taken to social media to share a moving tribute to his close friend, Joe Lyons, on what was the fifth anniversary of the radio producer's death Roman Kemp has issued a moving tribute to his pal on the fifth anniversary of his death. The broadcaster was left utterly heartbroken in 2020 when he was informed that Joe Lyons, his close friend and the producer of his Capital FM Breakfast show, had sadly died at the age of just 31. Broadcaster Roman noticed that Joe hadn't arrived at work on August 4, and texted his pal: "Let me know you're ok," believing he had slept through his alarm. However, as the morning went on, staff became concerned about Joe, with a member of the team heading over to his home to check in on him. While still on air, Roman was informed by an executive producer that Joe was "in the house." Speaking on his BBC documentary, Our Silent Emergency, 32-year-old Roman said: "I knew. I said, 'Is he gone?' She said, 'Yeah, he's gone.'" In the wake of Joe's death, his family set up Joe's Buddy Line, offering emotional and mental health support to people from primary school, right through to university. On Monday, the fifth anniversary of Joe's death, Roman shared a moving tribute on his Instagram Story. Sharing a clip of Joe in the studio, watching a Tottenham football match, with Joe offering commentary, the late producer was seen in his element. Captioning his post, Roman said: "Can't believe it's been 5 years since you've been gone bud, still one of the best commentators I've ever heard. Even if we were meant to be running a national radio show @joesbuddyline." Roman and Joe first met nine years ago, and instantly formed a close friendship and spent almost every day together. The last time that the presenter saw Joe was on a sunny day, when they spent time together on Clapham Common shortly after the first lockdown. Unbeknownst to Roman, Joe had been secretly dealing with his mental health. Since Joe's death, Roman has become an advocate for men's mental health and even opened up about his own struggles, inspiring millions to reach out and speak to friends, family and professionals. Four years after Joe's death, Roman made the decision to step back from his position on Capital FM's Breakfast show, and explained that part of his decision related to finding out about his pal while at work. He previously told the Mirror about his decision: "I actually think that a big decision in wanting to do it and wanting to move on and feeling like I need to close this chapter isn't anything to do with radio or the occupation." He went on to explain: "It's to do what happened for me. That sounds wild, but I mean it, it's not normal. Imagine a tragedy happened in your house, you're going to want to move. The bosses at Capital know this and I said it, it's difficult, I went through such a horrible moment in that room in that studio, four years on and I've been living that same day over and over again, without the awful event. "For me, I'm quite ready to go 'OK, close that door now, don't keep going back living that horrible day over again. That's sad that obviously affects me but it does. Every day I walk in there and I see Joe, that's a weird thing to do." Joe, who has been described as "the happiest person," who put others before himself, sadly took his own life. Roman said that the heartbreaking news had "ripped" his life apart.
