
Vigilance uncovers multiple properties of engineer during raids

Bhubaneswar/Berhampur: Vigilance on Saturday uncovered extensive property holdings belonging to Sushil Kumar Panda, an assistant executive engineer of Ganjam block, during raids conducted across seven locations.
The investigation revealed multiple high-value properties suspected to be acquired through disproportionate means.
The anti-corruption agency's operation led to the discovery of six plots, with four prime locations in Bhubaneswar, and three residential buildings. A significant finding was a triple-storied building measuring around 4,620 sq ft in Ramahari Nagar. Additional properties include two flats in Ankuli area, Berhampur, and Puri, along with various plots spread across Berhampur, Bhubaneswar, and Khurda areas.
The simultaneous raids, executed by a team comprising six deputy superintendents of police, seven inspectors, and supporting staff, covered multiple locations, including Panda's office in Ganjam, residential properties, and his relatives' premises. The search operations extended to his paternal house in Gudiali, in-laws' residence in Bedha, and his brother's flat.
During the operation, investigators seized Rs 2.05 lakh cash, one car, and two two-wheelers.

A bank locker held jointly by Panda and his wife was also discovered, the contents of which are yet to be evaluated.
A vigilance officer involved in the operation stated that the total value of the seized assets might increase after complete assessment. "The technical wing of the vigilance department is currently working out the measurement and cost of the buildings and plots," the officer added.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities focusing on determining the full extent of assets accumulated during Panda's service period.
The case highlights the department's continued efforts to combat corruption among public servants in Odisha.
The anti-corruption agency has also unearthed gold ornaments of 126 grams, bank deposits of Rs 50 lakh. His other deposits are under verification.
Panda joined govt service as a contractual junior engineer at Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district in 1977. He was working as the JE in different blocks till 2015. His post was regularised in Aug 2015. In 2023, he was promoted as assistant executive engineer in Ganjam block.

Loot suspect attacks cops with sword, 2 injured
Mohali: A suspected robber allegedly took a sword to an interstate police team that had gone to Kharar to arrest him on Saturday afternoon, injuring two constables, before he was overpowered. Security has been tightened near Nijjar chowk on Kharar-Chandigarh road. The accused, identified as Amandeep Singh Ausan, was on the run after snatching Rs 55,000 from Bhadroia toll plaza in Damtal in Himachal Pradesh, Kharar DSP Karan Singh Sandhu said on Sunday. He allegedly attacked the staff with swords when they asked him to stop for toll clearance on the night of June 26–27. He was accompanied by two women, who allegedly joined in the assault. Himachal Police, in coordination with Kharar police, tracked the accused and intercepted him near Chaumajra village in Kharar, Mohali. When they moved in to arrest him, Amandeep and the two women allegedly attacked the cops with swords. Constables Sukhmander Singh and Davinder Singh of Kharar City police station were injured, one of them requiring eight to nine stitches on his arm. Both are in hospital. Amandeep was arrested and the women detained. DSP Sandhu said, "The accused were handed over to Himachal police. We will bring them back to Mohali on production warrants." ASP Rajpal Thakur of Himachal Police said a case has been registered against Amandeep and his accomplices at Damtal Police Station, Kangra.

‘Section of girls getting involved in drug abuse': Tripura CM Manik Saha
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Sunday reiterated that the state government has a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related activities. Speaking at a government event in Dhalai district, CM Saha said, 'We have seen recently that a section of girls has got addicted to drugs. Drug abuse through intravenous injection is on the rise in the state. This practice can lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS.' He added that the state was also being used as a corridor for illegal drug trade. The chief minister informed the audience that the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned Rs 198 crore to set up a special de-addiction centre at Bishramganj in Sepahijala district. In addition to this, the state government is also setting up de-addiction centres in all eight districts of Tripura. He added that drug seizures increased by 103 per cent and destruction of drugs by 132 per cent in 2024-25 in comparison to the previous year. Meanwhile, CM Saha also stated that his government will honour the tripartite insurgent surrender agreement signed last year by the Centre, the state government, and insurgent outfits – National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) – and fulfill the promises made to the surrendered cadres of both the banned militant groups.

Newly-wed woman ends life due to dowry harassment in Tirupur
Tirupur: A newly-wed woman committed suicide by consuming sulphas tablets, an agricultural fumigant, on her way to Mondipalayam temple here on Sunday following dowry harassment. Police have arrested her husband, father-in-law and mother-in-law. Identifying the deceased as Ridhanya, 27, daughter of Annadurai, who runs a garment firm in the district, a police officer said she was married to Kavinkumar, 28, grandson of Tirupur district Congress leader Krishnan. "The marriage was solemnised in April. Ridhanya's parents had presented a dowry of 100 sovereigns of gold and a Volvo car worth Rs70 lakh to the groom." On Sunday, the officer said, Ridhanya sent a voice message to her father on WhatsApp stating her husband and his parents Eswaramurthy, 51, and Chithradevi, 47, had been harassing her demanding more dowry since 10 days after the marriage. According to the officer, she also told her father that she was going to end her life, as she couldn't endure the physical and mental harassment any more.
