Hindustan Times3 days ago
Ghaziabad: The round-the-clock agitation launched by councillors of the municipal corporation ended on Sunday afternoon, after the Ghaziabad municipal corporation officials accepted their three demands in writing and stated that official minutes of the June 30 board meeting will be prepared and sent to the city mayor on July 25. The June 30 board meeting was called by mayor Sunita Dayal, and the councillors with a resounding majority rejected the proposal of a property-tax hike as per the new structure, saying the tax will burden residents by multiple times. The June 30 board meeting was called by mayor Sunita Dayal, and the councillors with a resounding majority rejected the proposal of a property-tax hike as per the new structure, saying the tax will burden residents by multiple times.
The councillors later started protesting on July 18 seeking minutes of the board meeting which had discussed the proposal for hiking property tax on June 30.
'Since the June 30 meeting, we have been demanding official minutes. But officials were not ready to give us. On Sunday, the officials arrived and accepted three demands. They also issued a letter to this effect. So, we suspended our agitation,' said Gaurav Solanki, councillor from ward 76 of Vaishali – 1.
On Sunday, the corporation officials issued a letter to the councillors saying minutes of the meeting will be issued on July 25 and made available to the mayor by 10am. The letter also stated that hiked property tax bills being sent to the mobile numbers of the taxpayers will be stopped till further order. Also, the rebate of 20% (applicable upon payment of taxes till July 31) will be extended till September 30, and its proposal will be put in the upcoming board meeting, it added.
'The Kanwar Yatra is going on well and officials and staff are engaged in different works along with the councillors. Another meeting was held today (on Sunday) with the councillors at the corporation headquarters. The secretary of the House was instructed to take immediate action on the three demands and issue a letter to the councillors,' municipal commissioner Vikramaditya Malik said in a statement on Sunday.
A public interest litigation filed by three former councillors against the proposed hike is pending in the Allahabad high court, with the next hearing on July 29.

New York, Michigan, Iowa...: Is Trump getting desperate to shape US midterms that are due in 2026?

Donald Trump is steering key Republicans away from statewide races to protect the GOP's narrow House majority in 2026 read more As the political calendar turns its attention toward the 2026 US midterm elections, President Donald Trump appears to be exerting increasingly overt control over Republican congressional strategy. In recent weeks, Trump has played a decisive role in shaping GOP candidacies across battleground states like New York, Michigan and Iowa. While his supporters hail this as party discipline in action, many view it as a calculated and possibly desperate attempt to prevent another electoral debacle like the 2018 House flip. The question now looms: is Trump consolidating power or compensating for vulnerability? STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Keeping the House at all costs At the core of Trump's strategy is a single, obsessive goal: protecting the GOP's razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives. Republicans control the chamber by only a handful of seats, a fact not lost on the president. According to reporting by NBC News, Trump has been personally intervening to dissuade vulnerable House Republicans from seeking higher office, thereby keeping reliable incumbents in place. The Associated Press quoted Trump campaign sources as saying that the move marks a departure from earlier cycles where Trump often endorsed insurgent Senate candidates without much concern for broader party dynamics. Now, the emphasis is on unity and incumbency especially in marginal districts. New York: Lawler stays put, Stefanik in waiting One of the clearest examples of this effort unfolded in New York. Congressman Mike Lawler, who represents a swing district in the Hudson Valley that former vice president Kamala Harris won in 2024, recently confirmed he would not challenge Governor Kathy Hochul for the state's top job. While Lawler stressed the decision was his alone, he acknowledged that Trump had 'offered his perspective' during a private meeting. Lawler's re-election campaign was endorsed by Trump in May—an early signal that the president wanted him to stay in the House. Republican strategists see Lawler's decision as critical to retaining the seat in a high-stakes midterm. Meanwhile, this move potentially clears the gubernatorial path for Representative Elise Stefanik, a staunch Trump ally whose name was floated after her nomination to the United Nations ambassadorship was withdrawn. Stefanik has indicated she will reveal her intentions after this fall's elections. As reported by NBC News, her possible candidacy highlights Trump's willingness to elevate allies from safer districts while reinforcing GOP infrastructure where it's most needed. Michigan: Avoiding a GOP civil war Trump's influence is equally visible in Michigan, where Congressman Bill Huizenga opted out of a Senate run after meeting with the president at the White House. The Associated Press revealed that Trump's priority was keeping Huizenga in the House to secure his west Michigan seat, rated 'likely Republican' by the Cook Political Report. Huizenga's exit from the Senate race effectively clears the way for former Congressman Mike Rogers, a Trump-friendly figure who has staffed his campaign with former Trump aides. Though Trump has not yet formally endorsed Rogers, insiders expect that move soon. While Huizenga has not officially announced a re-election bid, GOP operatives suggest his decision—shaped directly by Trump—is part of a broader strategy to avoid intra-party conflict in swing states and to maximise resources toward winnable districts. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Iowa: Nunn bows to Trump's midterm playbook In Iowa, Representative Zach Nunn had been considering a run for governor following Governor Kim Reynolds' decision not to seek re-election. However, after a conversation with Trump, Nunn chose to remain in the House. The district he represents is a Democratic target in 2026, having been won by only four points in the last cycle. Trump's endorsement of Nunn's re-election was quick and emphatic, with sources describing the congressman as a 'team player.' According to NBC News, this move is emblematic of Trump's new playbook which is of convincing lawmakers in contested districts that the national interest of the party outweighs individual ambitions. Representative Randy Feenstra, who holds a safer seat, is now among those considering a gubernatorial run. This supports the notion that Trump is willing to let GOP members seek higher office only when their departure doesn't threaten House control. A calculated silence in the Senate Interestingly, while Trump is taking a hands-on approach with House races, he has remained relatively circumspect when it comes to open Senate contests. In states like Georgia and North Carolina, Trump has not yet waded into contentious primaries. Political observers interpret this as a deliberate contrast to his previous, often chaotic, endorsement patterns. That said, former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper is widely expected to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Thom Tillis. This could create a high-stakes showdown that may yet draw Trump's attention. For now, his priority appears to be ensuring a stable, loyal and electorally viable House majority. Trump's direct involvement has not gone unnoticed. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama told The Hill that Trump now commands more influence over the Republican Party than any president he's ever seen. Tuberville also issued a warning to dissenters, stating that GOP lawmakers who refuse to align with Trump should prepare to face primary challenges. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD However, not all Republicans are falling in line. Michigan's Representative John James has chosen to run for governor, a decision that reportedly displeased Trump. During a recent event, Trump jokingly suggested that James shouldn't be allowed to run unless his House seat could be adequately filled. Such moments illustrate the limits of Trump's control—even as most GOP lawmakers seem to heed his directives. As Lawler candidly put it in a media appearance, while Trump's opinion was valuable, 'I didn't get here by doing as told.' Desperation or discipline? Democrats, unsurprisingly, interpret these moves through a lens of weakness. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries framed Trump's interventions as coercion, saying that Republicans are being 'ordered' to stay in place because of their grim electoral prospects. Still, it's hard to ignore the effectiveness of Trump's manoeuvres. He's minimising damaging primaries, bolstering vulnerable districts and testing a more disciplined version of his political machine. This could either be the product of maturity in strategy or of nervous anticipation about what's at stake if the GOP fails to hold the House again. If Trump's campaign is marked by calculation rather than chaos in 2026, it may not be desperation at all but rather a serious, if ruthless, effort to ensure that history does not repeat itself. Whether that's enough to counteract traditional midterm losses remains to be seen. What's clear is that Trump intends to leave nothing to chance. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Include both Goa airports in visa-on-arrival scheme: State govt to Centre

The Goa government has been pursuing with the Centre for the inclusion of both the airports in the state in the visa-on-arrival scheme, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said in the legislative assembly on Thursday. Goa has successfully tapped into the emerging markets such as Poland, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. He was responding to questions raised by some members in the House, including Michael Lobo of the ruling BJP. The coastal state has two airports - the Goa International Airport at Dabolim in South Goa district and the Manohar International Airport at Mopa in North Goa district. Khaunte said while the e-visa programme has already been incorporated for more than 170 countries by the Union government, the visa-on-arrival facility is currently restricted to a select group of just four countries -- Japan, South Korea, the UAE, and Russia. "This facility is operational only at six designated metro airports, including Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru," he added. The state government has already raised this matter with the civil aviation minister and is planning to discuss it with Union Home Minister Amit Shah as well, he said. Khaunte said the state government has also corresponded with the Union Ministry of External Affairs. "We are actively pursuing the matter to ensure that both the facilities in Goa are included as a visa-on-arrival airport," he said. Speaking further, Khaunte said the connectivity from Goa to other states and countries has increased due to the "outreach efforts" undertaken by the tourism department. While the visa-on-arrival facility comes with both advantages and limitations, it is important to work out a comprehensive and balanced solution, he said. Once the assembly session concludes (on August 8), the matter will be taken up in detail with Chief minister Pramod Sawant and all relevant stakeholders, the minister said. He expressed confidence that through collective dialogue and coordinated efforts, a viable way forward can be achieved. Goa has successfully tapped into the emerging markets such as Poland, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which previously had limited or no direct tourism linkage with the coastal state, Khaunte said. "This growth is attributed to targeted international roadshows and sustained global destination promotion, which have expanded Goa's reach and visibility across new geographies," he said. Khaunte said the data on tourist arrivals and hotel occupancy is systematically captured through the Tourism Information Management Enterprise software.

Both Houses adjourned for fourth day amid Opposition uproar over Bihar SIR

New Delhi, July 24 (UNI) For the fourth consecutive day today, both Houses of Parliament were adjourned for the day after Opposition members created ruckus, demanding the withdrawal of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Bihar and discussion on Operation Sindoor. As soon as the Lok Sabha reconvened at 2 pm, and the presiding officer, Krishna Prasad Tenneti, called for the proceedings of the House, Opposition members entered into the well of the House holding placards in support of their demands and started raising slogans. Tenneti urged the members to return to their seats and participate in the discussion on the bill related to the Scheduled Tribes of Goa, which was due today. He said that the bill was also listed for discussion yesterday, but due to the commotion caused by Opposition members, the discussion could not take place. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal said that an important bill related to the Scheduled Tribes is listed for discussion and passage, but the Opposition was not concerned about the interests of the Scheduled Tribes. He said that this is a significant bill as for the first time, a legislation has been introduced to provide representation to the Scheduled Tribes of Goa. The presiding officer said that yesterday as well, the Goa State Scheduled Tribe Representation Re-adjustment Bill, 2014 was brought for discussion and passage, but the House was not allowed to function. He added, "As long as you keep displaying placards, the proceedings of the House cannot continue. All of you please return to your seats and participate in the discussion on the bill". Due to the continued protest by Opposition members, the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until Friday. Earlier in the day, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm after Opposition members created ruckus demanding rollback of SIR process in Bihar. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha too was adjourned for the day after Opposition party members protested against the SIR of the electoral roll in Bihar and created uproar. When the House reconvened at 2 pm, Deputy Chairperson Bhubaneswar Kalita called on AIADMK's M Thambi Durai to begin the discussion on the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025. As soon as Durai stood up to speak, Opposition members rose from their seats and came near the chair, shouting slogans in protest against the SIR in Bihar. As the uproar escalated, BJP's Laxmikant Bajpai raised a point of order under Rule 235 and demanded action against Opposition members. In response, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the House, Pramod Tiwari, also cited rules and said that the Leader of the Opposition was not being given an opportunity to speak in the House. Kalita appealed to the Opposition members to return to their seats and urged for maintaining order in the House. When his appeals had no effect, he adjourned the proceedings for the rest of the day.
