Sabah Space Centre study nears completion, site decision expected by July

KOTA KINABALU (June 13): The study on the proposed Sabah Space Centre is nearing completion, with the final report expected by the end of July, said Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah Ministry (KSTI) Permanent Secretary, Datuk Mohd Hanafiah Mohd Kassim.
'It was supposed to be completed earlier, but delays occurred due to pending information from several government offices. The new target for completion is by the end of July. It's nearly done,' he told reporters during KSTI's Sabah Excellent Service Awards ceremony at the Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort today, which was graced by KSTI Minister Datuk Ariffin Mohd Arif.
Once the study is finalised, planning for the project's implementation phases can begin, including identifying the budget requirements.
'Before we can proceed, the first step would be budgeting. The space industry is highly advanced and demands substantial funding, so foreign investment will be essential. Essentially, they will be the ones carrying out the implementation,' he said.
Hanafiah noted, however, that recent tensions between Elon Musk and the President of the United States have posed a setback to Sabah's space ambitions.
'This is relevant because we are targeting investment from Elon Musk's side. Most of the world's major commercial space programmes are based in the United States, followed by Europe. We are also considering China. All this requires firm decisions at the federal level,' he explained.
From a global perspective, he added, there is currently congestion in satellite launches due to a shortage of launch platforms.
'There is a bottleneck. Rocket operations are also very costly. That's why we're focusing on developing the ground-based operation site. In the future, God willing, with proper training, Malaysians — particularly Sabahan talents — can move further into the space sector,' he said.
He also emphasised that the project has the potential to create job opportunities for the people of Sabah.
In addition to Sabah, the states of Pahang and Sarawak are also vying to become Malaysia's launch site.
'There are three states involved, if I'm not mistaken. But everything is still undecided. Each state is likely conducting its own study. Once completed, the findings will be presented to the state governments and subsequently brought to the federal level. Only then will a final site be selected,' he said.
Nevertheless, Hanafiah expressed optimism that Sabah has the capability to be chosen as the launch site.
Touching on the awards ceremony, he said it is part of the Sabah Government's policy to recognise the contributions of public servants. Three categories were presented: Special Awards under the Permanent Secretary, Special Awards under the Minister, and the Excellence Service Awards.

NST Leader: Low MyDigital ID sign-ups reflect public trust deficit

ONLY 2.8 million out of a possible 35.8 million Malaysians have registered for the MyDigital ID. This says a lot about their trust, or lack thereof, in digital platforms — particularly after breaches in hospital records and the recent Immigration processing chaos. With much-vaunted secure databases containing sensitive private information having been breached by ransomware hackers previously, it's understandable why the rest of the populace might be clinging to their MyKad as if it were the last vestige of their soul. Malaysian motorists have already surrendered their physical driving licences to MyJPJ, now carrying digital versions in their smartphones. And the Johor customs, immigration and quarantine complex chaos was caused by system integration issues. We shudder to think what a hack could do to the system. This won't help: AI chatbots, or the secretive technology behind these digital assistants, could exploit registered debit cards on pay platforms to "subscribe" without user consent. Add to this the billions bilked from victims of digital banking scams. Against this backdrop, the government is mulling mandatory MyDigital registration to address the limited voluntary sign-ups. MyDigital ID, designed for secure online identity verification, has been integrated into 82 digital systems, including 35 government platforms — with 17 more taking shape and 21 under deliberation. While the government maintains that these platforms do not store personal data, a successful hack remains a chilling prospect. Hackers, empowered by the unimaginable advances in generative AI, are resourceful enough to link breaches into relevant databases. While government digital security programmes are robust, aiming to safeguard national interests and citizen data, the most crucial element remains elusive: public trust. Mandating MyDigital ID, rather than addressing these trust deficits first, risks putting the cart before the horse. Recent breaches and system disruptions have scarred public confidence, making such a move unlikely to foster the very trust needed for widespread adoption. What's needed is a multifaceted approach prioritising enhanced security and unwavering transparency. First, to tackle the public trust deficit, focus on improving user experience and accessibility. This means creating intuitive and easy-to-use applications, reinforced with instant feedback mechanisms. Next, foster a culture of accountability and disclosure. This includes clear standards, methodologies and safeguards to anonymise mobile phone data, alongside strong governance protocols for sensitive information. Paramount are independent audits of data security and privacy practices, alongside vigorous reinforcement of the Personal Data Protection Act and the Cyber Security Act. Finally, raise allocations for cybersecurity measures and open data initiatives against data breaches and cyberattacks. These proposed initiatives can help build a stronger foundation of trust towards greater adoption of digital services.

PN endorses United Opposition Front to coordinate stand on key national issues

KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional's (PN) Supreme Council has reviewed and endorsed a proposal to form Barisan Pembangkang Bersatu (BPB), or the United Opposition Front, aimed at forging consensus on key national and public interest issues among political parties outside the ruling coalition. The proposal, presented by PN chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today, outlines the formation of a structured platform to enable opposition parties to take joint positions on matters affecting the people and the country. In a statement issued after the meeting, PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Azmin Ali said the objective was to coordinate efforts among non-government political entities and align their responses to issues of national concern through a spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility. "The Supreme Council has agreed in principle to the formation of this opposition front and will initiate follow-up discussions with other political parties outside the government bloc," he said via the statement posted on PN's official Facebook page. He said the council viewed the proposal as a step forward in strengthening the voice of the opposition and ensuring the concerns of ordinary Malaysians are brought to the forefront of national discourse. "The supreme council sees it as a timely and necessary move to restore balance to the country's democratic process. We must unite all political forces outside the ruling bloc to ensure there is a credible, structured and effective opposition that can speak and act on behalf of the people," he said. Azmin added that further discussions would be held with other political parties and civil society groups before proceeding with the initiative. He also said that earlier in the meeting, which was attended by top leaders of all component parties, the council discussed preparations for the upcoming Sabah state election. "A central committee, chaired by opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, was formed to coordinate seat distribution, campaign strategies, and manifesto development. Among the concerns raised were over the long-standing infrastructure issues in Sabah, especially water supply, electricity, and road access, that are said to have burdened the people for far too long," he said. Azmin also reiterated that PN fully supported the Himpunan Turun Anwar rally, describing it as a peaceful gathering reflecting the people's demand for real change. "This is not merely a protest. It is the people's expression of frustration and hope for a better future, free from economic oppression and authoritarian governance," he added.
