‘Untainted' march to Nabanna, traffic feels heat across Kolkata
1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: Several hundred cops blocked multiple entries to Nabanna to stop thousands of unemployed 'untainted' teachers from marching to Nabanna on Monday. The rally threw traffic in large parts of Kolkata and Howrah into a mess for better part of the day. After hours of negotiations, the protesters — marching under the Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha, a platform representing 'untainted' candidates who sought a meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee and chief secretary Manoj Pant — said they would not budge and would continue to protest on the roaduntil the publication of a certified list of eligible candidates was uploaded on the West Bengal School Service Commission's website. The protesters gave the govt "a deadline" until Monday midnight. A 20-member team — 18 teachers and two non-teaching staff — made the announcement at a press conference after meeting CS Pant on Monday evening. Suman Biswas, who was in the meeting, said: "We demanded a clear list to be uploaded on the website; that's the only demand we have at this stage. Why should we take responsibility for this scam?" Mehebub Mandal, another prominent face of the protest, said, "They are trying to put all responsibilities on us, saying the uploaded list might create legal issues in the review process. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? In Howrah, the traffic situation was worse, with almost all roads to Kolkata under tight security. Even the bylanes in Mandirtala were barricaded, hampering normal movement. There were concerns about unrest surrounding the Nabanna Abhijan even as the protesters gathered at the Howrah station around noon. Huge metal barricades were installed at several key locations like Bangabashi crossing on GT Road, Ramakrishnapur Ghat Gate along Foreshore Road, Kazipara crossing, and Satragachi crossing. Additionally, small guard rails were installed in the areas adjacent to Nabanna, such as Shibpur, Mandirtala, and Belepole. RAF personnel were deployed at each point and two water cannons were kept ready. An additional 2,000 policemen were brought in from various commissionerates.

Draft delimitation published for ZP, panchayat samiti polls
Kolhapur: The State Election Commission (SEC) has released the draft delimitation for 1,917 electoral divisions across 32 zilla parishads (ZPs) and 3,802 electoral colleges from 336 panchayat samitis. These local bodies, crucial to the panchayat raj system, are preparing for elections in the coming months after a three-to-five-year hiatus. The delimitation, based on the 2011 census population, is now open for suggestions and objections. Often referred to as "mini-mantralayas" due to their significant role in rural development, ZPs operate at the district level, while the panchayat samitis function at the taluka level. According to a senior election official, most ZPs show minor changes, primarily adding one or two electoral divisions or colleges. These adjustments aim to accommodate areas reclassified as town councils, which now fall under urban local bodies. With this draft delimitation published, political parties have started strategizing. Eager party workers are scrutinizing the new boundaries to assess their electoral advantage. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Parties are also actively seeking candidates and beginning to form local alliances with prominent figures at the village and tehsil levels. The elections for rural local bodies are going to be contested party-wise. There are two alliances: BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP-led Mahayuti, and Mahavikas Aghadi led by Congress, SS (UBT), and NCP (SP). Politicians who TOI spoke with recently said the decision to enter into an alliance or contest separately is decentralised, meaning local leaders will take up the call. Sachin Sawant, Congress spokesperson said, "We are keenly watching the delimitation. Our local cadre will scrutinise the delimitation done and accordingly register the suggestions and objections to the appropriate authority. The decision of contesting the polls in alliance will be taken after proper deliberations." Recently, during a meeting with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, it was decided to ask Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) to send the merger plan afresh. To begin with, it was announced that eight neighbouring villages would be merged into the KMC. However, these villages have been included in the delimitation for ZP and panchayat samiti electoral areas. The pro-merger activists had demanded not to carry out delimitation for these villages and include them in KMC limits and carry out ward structuring for the civic body election, which seems to be a distant dream now.
