Hong Kong-born actor and entrepreneur Sammy Sum has opened up about the financial struggles he endured during the early years of his career at TVB.
In a recent interview with fellow actress Lee San San on her YouTube programme, the 42-year-old revealed that he once earned a monthly salary of HK$6,000 (RM3,243).
Out of that, HK$4,000 (RM2,162) went towards rent for a tiny subdivided flat in Tsim Sha Tsui, leaving him with just HK$2,000 (RM1,081) to cover all other living expenses.
To make ends meet, Sum took on part-time jobs, occasionally borrowed money from friends and would spend no more than HK$50 (RM27) a day.
'I used to walk from Tsim Sha Tsui to this barbecue shop in Mong Kok to buy two meal boxes for HK$20 (RM10) each. I was really just surviving on HK$50 a day,' he said, adding that he kept up with this lifestyle for nearly seven years.
Despite the hardship, Sum pressed on out of his passion for acting and remained grateful for simply having a roof over his head.
'As long as I had a bed to sleep on, I was fine. I could chase my dreams with a simple heart, and that alone made me happy,' he added.
Sum, who joined TVB in 2006, first gained popularity for his performance in the 2011 series Lives Of Omission .
His breakout moment came in 2014 with the hit crime drama Line Walker , which earned him a nomination for Most Improved Male Artiste at the TVB Anniversary Awards.
After his contract ended in 2016, Sum parted ways with TVB but made a return in 2020 to film two dramas – Final Destiny (2021) and I've Got The Power (2022).
The actor later signed an exclusive deal with Emperor Entertainment Group in 2022, following the expiration of his TVB contract in July 2021.

Suspicious iPhone 16 Pro Max Promo? Singer Nadeera's Instagram Reportedly Hacked

Whether your social media account is set to private or public, it essentially serves as a digital diary or a space to connect with friends and family. Either way, the last thing you'd want is for someone to hack into your account and exploit it to scam your followers. It's even more troubling if you're a public figure with thousands or even millions of followers, as hackers and scammers are more likely to exploit the account or even just your name for personal gain. That's exactly what appears to have happened to Malaysian singer Nadeera, whose account seems to have been hacked after fans noticed suspicious activity. Here's what happened: Recently, Nadeera had been posting her usual updates on Instagram, including appearances and performances. However, on Wednesday (2nd July), fans began to suspect something was wrong. The singer's account suddenly promoted a suspicious sale offering three iPhone 16 Pro Max units at a cheap price. The caption read: 'Why cheap? Because the cheap redemption that we are holding is a gift and a sign of our gratitude for the profit exceeding the target. Therefore, we are holding this special for our loyal followers and the fastest winners.' If the unusual photo and caption weren't already a red flag, the post was signed off as 'Admin' rather than Nadeera herself – a clear indication that her account had most likely been hacked. The account later posted a similar photo, claiming that one unit had already been sold and that only two iPhone 16 Pro Max units remained, likely an attempt to pressure potential victims into acting quickly before the supposed promotion ended. The comments sections on both posts were also disabled, a clear move to prevent fans from warning others that it was a scam. Following the incident, Nadeera's agency, Rocketfuel Entertainment, issued a statement confirming that her Instagram account had indeed been hacked. They also warned fans not to click on any links related to the alleged iPhone 16 Pro Max promotion. 'We're in the process of retrieving the account. We appreciate all the information fans have provided,' the company wrote. It's truly unfortunate that this has happened to Nadeera, and we hope she regains access to her account soon. If her agency chooses to file a police report, there's also the possibility of taking legal action against the hacker. Sources: Instagram (1)(2)

#SHOWBIZ: Bella joins Syed Saddiq, family for birthday celebration

KUALA LUMPUR: Actress and singer Bella Astillah has once again captured public attention after being seen celebrating the birthday of Muar MP Syed Saddiq's elder brother, alongside the politician and his family. The intimate gathering, held on June 28, was documented in three photographs shared on Instagram by Syed Saddiq's sister-in-law, Aishah Kamal. One image showed Bella, 31, standing next to Syed Saddiq, 32, in a family portrait, while the other two featured her posing with his mother, sister, and Aishah herself. Aishah Kamal captioned the post, saying: "Happy Birthday to my wonderful husband! So happy we could celebrate you today with our family. You're the best father and husband, and you deserve all the happiness in the world! Big thanks to my sister-in-law and Bella for helping me pull together this lovely gathering." The post quickly became a talking point on social media, with many netizens remarking on the apparent closeness between Bella and Syed Saddiq. Some also praised Bella for her support during what was described as the former Youth and Sports Minister's "darkest times." Rumours of a romance between Bella Astillah and Syed Saddiq have been circulating since their joint appearance in a Hari Raya Aidilfitri campaign for a local fashion label earlier this year. Adding to the speculation, Bella was present at the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya on June 25, offering her support as Syed Saddiq awaited a ruling on his appeal in a RM1.2 million graft case involving funds from Armada Bersatu. He was subsequently acquitted of all four charges. The following day, during a TikTok livestream, Syed Saddiq acknowledged Bella's consistent presence in his life over their six-month acquaintance. He described her as an "extraordinary woman," adding, "Whatever hardship I've faced is nothing compared to what she has gone through." Bella Astillah was previously married to Singaporean singer and actor Aliff Aziz. They have two children. Their first divorce was in 2019, followed by a reconciliation in 2020. They divorced for the second time on June 13, 2024.
