Ke Huy Quan & Lili Reinhart To Star In New Breed Of Horror Film, ‘Bad Boy', From ‘Longlegs' & ‘M3gan' Producers; Black Bear Launching Hot EFM Package

Yahoo05-02-2025
EXCLUSIVE: Here's a novel package that should generate some heat in the cold of Berlin's EFM next week.
Black Bear is launching Bad Boy, a new breed of genre film that charts a young woman's fight to escape a deadly serial killer through the eyes of man's best friend, his faithful dog. There have been plenty of kids films and some dramas told from an animal's perspective, but not many horror films.

From the producer of Longlegs, Dave Caplan, and M3gan, Divide/Conquer's Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath, the film is set to star Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Lili Reinhart (Hustlers). Genre director Jacob Chase (Come Play, The Girl In The Woods) will direct Travis Braun's Black List-topping script. Dave Caplan's company C2 will also fully finance. Filming is due to start in August in Canada.
Casting is in process for the dog, which we hear will be a Terrier.
Black Bear previously sold box office breakout Longlegs and has anticipated horror Monkey on deck. Genre is increasingly prevalent at all the film markets as big-budget packages become more scarce and this is the type of project that could stand out from the pack.
Black Bear is repping international rights. CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group rep domestic.
Here's the fun synopsis: 'Gary is a good boy who loves his new owner, Cameron (Ke Huy Quan). He gets treats and belly rubs and life is great. Gary isn't allowed in the basement though. And even if he was, he can't unlock doors. But there's a girl (Lili Reinhart) in the basement. And she can't come out to play. Gary doesn't know it, but he's her only chance.'
'I love dogs. More than people. And I'm tired of seeing horror movies where the dog is the first one to die!' said director Chase 'They're not just pets, they're our best friends, and I believe it's time for a horror film where the dog is the hero. Bad Boy is about loyalty, instinct, and the incredible bond between humans and dogs. It's going to be a highly original, grounded, deeply suspenseful fresh take on a horror thriller. And I'm thrilled to collaborate with Ke and Lili on two roles unlike anything they've played before.'
Everything Everywhere All at Once star Ke Huy Quan recently starred in season two of Marvel's Disney+ series, Loki, for which he was nominated for a Critics Choice Award. Next, he will lead Universal's action-comedy Love Hurts, followed by roles in Netflix's The Electric State and the leading role in Lionsgate's Fairytale in New York.
Reinhart is best known for her breakout role as Betty Cooper on the popular CW series Riverdale, as well as her performance in Hustlers. She is currently starring alongside Mark Ruffalo in writer-director Cooper Raiff's limited series Hal & Harper, which had its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
Braun is the first writer to reach #1 on the Black List two years in a row. One Night Only is being produced by Olive Bridge, while Lord & Miller are producing Dying for You, which also made the list in 2022. On the TV side, Braun is currently in an overall deal at Disney.
Jacob Chase is represented by CAA, Affirmative Entertainment, and Gang, Tyre. Travis Braun is represented by UTA, Echo Lake Entertainment, and Gang, Tyre. Ke Huy Quan is represented by WME, and Cohen & Gardner. Lili Reinhart is represented by UTA, Anonymous Content, and Peikoff Mahan Law Office.

Trump Says Sean Combs Pardon Is ‘More Difficult to Do' Since Combs Was ‘Hostile' to Him

Donald Trump weighed in again on rumors of a possible presidential pardon for Sean Combs, the hip-hop mogul convicted last month on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, calling him 'half-innocent' but agreeing with a host who asked if it was 'more likely a no.' Combs was found not guilty on July 2 of more serious sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges. Yet each of the two prostitution counts could technically land him in prison for up to 10 years when the mogul is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 3. (Legal experts, however, tell Rolling Stone they expect him to get much less.) More from Rolling Stone Sean Combs' Allies Have Upped Pardon Talks. His Survivors Want to Shut Them Down Sean Combs Asks Judge to Ditch His Conviction or Retry Prostitution Counts Mary J. Blige Fighting Back After 'Meritless' Lawsuit From Sean Combs' Ex Misa Hylton 'Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent,' Trump told Newsmax host Rob Finnerty Friday night. '[He's] still in jail or something, but he was celebrating a victory. But I guess it wasn't as good of a victory.' Trump and Combs have had an up-and-down relationship in the decades since they first met in the 1990s. Over the years, the real-estate magnate has been spotted at a number of Combs' VIP parties and events in New York City, including the Bad Boy founder's blowout birthday bashes. Trump called Combs 'a good friend' during a 2012 episode of The Apprentice, while Combs called Trump 'a friend of mine' in 2015, not long after Trump launched his first campaign. But when asked about Trump in 2017, Combs told the Daily Beast, 'I think that to be honest, we don't really give a fuck about Trump, because [black people are] in the same fucked-up position. So that's not what we're on.' Speaking to Charlamagne tha God in 2020, Combs said, 'White men like Trump need to be banished. That way of thinking is real dangerous. This man literally threatened the lives of us and our families about going to vote … The number one priority is to get Trump out of office.' When asked about a possible pardon in May, Trump said, 'I haven't seen him, I haven't spoken to him in years. He used to really like me a lot, but I think when I ran for politics that relationship busted up … I read some little bit nasty statements in the paper all of a sudden.' But he seemed at least somewhat sympathetic to Combs' plight, telling reporters that he 'would certainly look at the facts' of the case. 'I know people are thinking about it,' he added. 'People have been very close to asking.' During Friday's interview, Trump recalled that he was 'very friendly with him. I got along with him great, and [he] seemed like a nice guy. I didn't know him well. But when I ran for office, he was very hostile. It's hard, you know? We're human beings. And we don't like to have things cloud our judgment, right? But when you knew someone and you were fine, and then you run for office, and he made some terrible statements. So I don't know …. it makes it more difficult to do.' As Rolling Stone reported in May, the mogul's associates began contacting people close to Trump shortly after he won the presidential election last November. During the presidential transition and in the opening months of Trump's second administration, several longtime friends and allies of Combs, who've known the rapper for many years, began reaching out to some Trump transition and administration officials, as well as to others close to the president, two sources familiar with the matter and another person briefed on it told Rolling Stone. The small number of senior Trump officials who were aware of the talks expressed deep reservations about commuting a possible Combs sentence, given the severity of the charges. (A rep for Combs did not immediately reply to a request for comment on Friday's interview.) It's unclear if Combs' acquittal on the most severe charges has changed the calculus among the president or anyone in his administration. As Rolling Stone reported on Thursday, Combs' team has intensified their behind-the-scenes campaign in recent weeks, according to people in and out of the Trump administration. 'The pleading has gotten bigger [this month],' a Trump adviser says, referring to a conspicuous uptick in Combs allies' attempts to woo Team Trump. In the past few weeks, longtime Combs allies have offered to pay political operatives, lobbyists, and others with close ties to Trumpland and government officials large financial sums in exchange for help with a potential Trump pardon, three people familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone. One of the sources says the offer they were privy to was in the mid-six figures. Multiple Trump advisers still feel it would be a deeply unforced error to pardon Combs while the administration is still embroiled in a scandal over their handling of the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. There are also ongoing talks among survivors to send a personal letter to Trump urging him against the idea. Rolling Stone has reviewed a draft copy of the letter, which admonishes Combs for attempting to 'reclaim control' and 'rewrite history' following his conviction on prostitution charges. A pardon, the draft adds, 'would not be justice' but a 'devastating message to survivors everywhere: that our lives, our pain, and our truth are still negotiable.' On Thursday morning, lawyers for Combs submitted a 62-page filing asking a judge to vacate his prostitution conviction and fully acquit him or grant him a new trial 'focused solely' on those two counts. Earlier this week, they filed a new motion asking that Combs be released on bail. Southern District of New York prosecutors filed their own motion Thursday night arguing that Combs remain in jail until his sentencing. Freddie Gibbs Disses DJ Akademiks And Calls Gunna A 'Rat' On New Album

Freddie Gibbs has never been the one to shy away from sending shots at his opponents, and today (July 25), he provided Hip-Hop fans with another round. The Gary, Indiana, rapper dropped off his brand new project, Alfredo 2 with The Alchemist, and took aim at Gunna and DJ Akademiks on 'Lavish Habits.' On the track, he leaves no room for assumptions as he name-drops his longtime foe and makes fun of his weight. 'First-class Virgin Atlantic, stewardess' t*tties plastic/ I'm still gon' squeeze Akademiks t*tties, that fat b*stard,' he spits on the mellow instrumental. He then directed his attention towards Gunna, referencing the Atlanta hitmaker's run-in with the government in 2023 due to the highly publicized YSL RICO trial. 'Gunna dissed me and took a plea, he a rat b*stard,' Gibbs raps. Listen below. This is certainly not the first time Gibbs and Ak butted heads, as their beef kicked off five years ago when the latter called the former 'irrelevant' in June 2020. The 'Scottie Beam' spitter threatened the host and their rift continued to spiral for years to come. He has a history with Gunna as well. The 'fukumean' artist rapped on his ‎2022 track 'poochie gown': I can't f**k with Freddie Gibbs (No)/ N**gas tellin' fibs (Fibs).' That same year, he also tweeted: 'When my album drop Freddie Gibbs will the biggest moment of his career.' Alfredo 2 is a follow-up to its first iteration that made landfall in 2020. The new LP boasts guest appearances from Larry June, J.I.D., and Anderson .Paak, and was led by single '1995.' He gifted fans with a short film, Alfredo: The Movie directed by Nick Walker, to go along with the project. Watch it above. When 'Together' Movie Will Be Available to Stream and How to Watch

Hollywood's favorite couple just debuted the horror of the summer. Together, starring Alison Brie and Dave Franco, is body horror built for the big screen, landing in theaters July 30. Together premiered at Sundance in January 2025, sparked a fierce bidding war, and was scooped up by Neon for about $17 million. Like most of Neon's recent releases – think Longlegs and Anora – Together is playing in theaters exclusively for the foreseeable future. Neon's traditional model means you're not bumping it into your queue until at least six months post-release—possibly longer, depending on licensing and platform negotiations. So if you're champing at the bit between now and the new year, you'll be catching it in theaters. BUY TICKETS Together's aforementioned elder, Longlegs, hit theaters in July 2024, and didn't stream until February 2025. The buzz and surrounding Together could shorten that window, if the powers at be want to capitalize on the ephemeral moment. If you're opposed to the movie theater experience, you're wrong but you're lucky. You've found yourself in the height of the streaming empire, with access to more content than ever in cinematic history. So, if you're looking for a Together vibe, but are waiting to watch Together alone, here are some sister films to consider. David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986), stars Jeff Goldblum as a scientist whose teleportation machine merges his DNA with that of a housefly. His body begins to deteriorate, alongside his relationship with his journalist girlfriend (Geena Davis). Another '80s hit, Possession (1981) traces a crumbling marriage to its most absurd conclusion– a grotesque transformation in one of cinema's most disturbing depictions of emotional collapse. That aforementioned Cronenberg is really the godfather of body horror and, essentially, walked so the team behind Together could run. His most disturbing and provocative work was Crash (1996), which followed a group of people who derive sexual pleasure from car crashes and bodily trauma. Decades later, Julia Ducournau delivered a Cronenberg inspired body horror for the new age, Titane (2021) follows a woman whose traumatic head injury sparks a sexual attraction to cars. Unhinged Jake Gyllenhaal is a cinematic subgenre at this point in history. Enter Enemy (2013), which stars the star as a reclusive professor who discovers an actor that looks exactly like him. As their lives intertwine, reality fractures, obsession deepens, and identity blurs into psychological horror. Same, same, but different, Swallow (2019) is about a young woman who marries into wealth and develops a compulsive urge to swallow inedible objects like thumbtacks and batteries. It's a haunting meditation on the erasure of self within domestic relationships and patriarchal systems—a film where body horror is internalized and symbolic. If you're having trouble seeing the forest for the trees, all of these movies share themes of mental or emotional strife manifesting itself in the body. Together is the latest to sew together a relationship drama with that thread. As with any horror flick, we are in spoiler territory. Our recommendation? Hit the theaters. Otherwise, we'll meet back here in 2026. Buy Tickets
