NCW takes cognisance of Tamil Nadu bride's suicide, seeks report in 72 hours
NCW Chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, wrote to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, asking for a prompt and fair investigation under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
In an official statement, the Commission said, 'Such incidents are a grave violation of women's rights and demand urgent, exemplary action.'
The NCW also directed the Tamil Nadu Police to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within 72 hours.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
Meanwhile in a separate case, NCW on Saturday took suo moto cognisance regarding the alleged sexual harassment of an intern at IIT Madras campus, urging Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police for a fair and time-bound investigation and directing the authorities to ensure that psychological support is given to the victim.
The accused, Roushan Kumar (22), was arrested by Chennai police on June 27 for allegedly harassing the woman by using a stick and pulling her hair, according to officials.
Releasing a statement on X (formerly Twitter), NCW said, "National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance of a media report regarding the sexual harassment of a 20-year-old woman intern at IIT-Madras by a food court employee on campus."
Calling for a fair and time-bound investigation along with ensuring psychological support to the victim, the statement added, "Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the DGP, Tamil Nadu, calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023. NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure it."
All India Students' Federation also announced a protest, calling for ensuring women safety in the campus.
According to officials, on the night of June 26, around 9.20 PM, the accused used a stick and pulled the woman's hair, according to the complainant. The accused is working in the campus's Isthara food court. Based on the complaint and evidence collected, the accused was arrested, officials said.

MANGALURU: Several persons sustained injuries after the private bus they were travelling in crashed into the compound wall of the KSRTC bus stand in Vittal on Saturday. Veena D'Souza, 42, a resident of Kanyana in Bantwal, stated that the accident took place when she was travelling with other passengers on a private bus. The bus was operating on the interstate route between Kalladka and Kanhangad. Nine other passengers on the bus were also injured and were referred to Vittal Govt Hospital for treatment. The driver and the bus conductor, Ravi, also sustained minor injuries. A case was registered at the Vittal Police Station under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the BNS. Journalist Sneha Barve receives death threats days after assault while reporting illegal construction
Journalist Sneha Barve has received fresh death threats just days after she was allegedly assaulted while reporting on illegal land construction in Manchar near Pune. The attack and repeated threats have triggered concern among press freedom advocates and women's rights bodies, prompting calls for urgent intervention by the Maharashtra government. Just three weeks later, on July 24, she received another death threat. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the National Commission for Women (NCW) have both demanded immediate protection for Barve and arrest of the prime accused, who remains at large despite being named in the police investigation. 'It is outrageous that journalist Sneha Barve, who was nearly killed for exposing wrongdoing, has been threatened once again, while the main suspect in her assault walks free,' said Kunal Majumder, CPJ's India representative. 'Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis must urgently guarantee Sneha Barve's safety to send a clear message that attacks on the press will not be tolerated and ensure those responsible are swiftly prosecuted.' Journalist describes the attack Barve told CPJ that on July 24, Prashant Pandurang Morde - who was arrested for his role in the earlier attack on the journalist - accosted her outside her office in the town of Manchar and threatened her, saying, 'This time, we should finish the matter for good.' On July 4, Barve, founder of the Samarth Bharat Pariwar YouTube-based news channel, was attacked by a group of men while reporting on alleged illegal construction on disputed land in Manchar, Pune district. A video of the attack shows a man striking Barwe with a wooden rod before she loses consciousness. Five suspects were arrested but released on bail three days later. The man accused of wielding the rod, Pandurang Sakharam Morde, a businessman with alleged political connections, was named in the First Information Report opening the investigation, but has not been arrested. On July 18, Prashant Morde, son of Pandurang Sakharam Morde, went to Barve's father's office and threatened to harm the entire family, the journalist told CPJ. In a complaint to police, Barve said the three suspects had been collecting information about her family and requested police protection. Women's panel concerned after attack The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the attack. According to reports received by the Commission, Barve was left unconscious after the assault. Despite the gravity of the incident, the prime accused has not yet been arrested, raising serious concerns about the handling of the case, the NCW said. Attack on pastor: Sulthan Bathery police register suo motu case
The Sulthan Bathery police have registered a case as part of the continuing investigation into the alleged manhandling attempt by a group of suspected Bajrang Dal activists against a pastor accusing him of conducting a door-to-door religious campaign for conversion in Wayanad district. The suo motu case was registered on August 2 after a video clip of the alleged attack, which took place on April 2, 2025 following allegations over forcible religions conversion attempts, resurfaced on various social media platforms. Pastor arrested for sexually assaulting five minor girls in Chennai The statement of the pastor who represented the Pentecost church would be recorded soon. However, no formal complaint was raised by the threatened pastor till date. Police sources said efforts were on to identify the attackers involved in the incident. The suo motu case was registered under Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with the intent to cause riot), 351 (3) [criminal intimidation to cause death or grievous hurt] and Section 3(5) [criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention] of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A senior police officer associated with the ongoing investigation said the pastor was threatened by the gang when he reportedly went to a tribal settlement at Cherukad near Sulthan Bathery to invite children to a summer vacation camp on April 2. 'The statement of the tribespeople at the settlement would be recorded soon for more clarity,' he added. The incident comes to light at a time when the State is going through an intense political storm over the recent arrest and imprisonment of two catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh, alleging forcible religious conversion and human trafficking attempts. The Bajrang Dal and the BJP activists had drawn the criticisms of their political opponents and the church in the name of supporting the legal action.
