, students from Sri Chaitanya Techno School, Shyambazar Vidyamandir High School, Scottish Church Collegiate School and Mahabir Institutelearnt about police responses to traffic violations, the nature of their work, and the use of traffic cameras in their daily operations.
Senior officers, led by Additional CP Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, faced questions about the "zero presence" of police during early morning hours, the tactics for identifying drunk drivers, and cop role in assisting students during waterlogging.
At Park Street crossing, the South Traffic Guard organised direct on-ground training. Pankaj Modak, OC of Park Circus Traffic Guard, and Prasenjit Chatterjee of Vidyasagar Guard visited Pratt Memorial and St Teresa, where they highlighted the importance of wearing helmets and not cutting lanes.

Lalbazar officials said they invited schools and students to come up with "innovative ideas" to help solve one of Kolkata's biggest traffic problems: the chaos on the roads at the start and close of school every day. The chaos can largely be blamed on poor planning, claim officers. The city's best schools are all located within a small belt of central and south Kolkata, with most of these schools starting between 7.30 am and 8.30 am.
There are several other pockets in the city where the same problem arises at different hours of the day, with the challenge restricted to a few zones.

Pvt bus debut for track-your-bus app
1 2 3 Kolkata: While only a few buses on route 223 are presently being tracked on the "Where Is My Bus App", an entire fleet of 106 buses plying on three routes – 45, 45A, and 45B – can be tracked on the app beginning next week. Over 84 buses out of 106 have installed new smartphones for this purpose. Training was completed on Saturday at Garia. The transport department has set July 22 as the cut-off date for complete data of bus workers on four other routes – K1, 219, 79B, and L238. These buses will be integrated into the platform the same day. A Durga Puja deadline is being pursued to bring all routes under this app. Once tracked through the VLTD system, both transport department officers and cops will also know if the buses are speeding using the app that all 45 route bus drivers will install in their smartphones. At the meeting with Kolkata Traffic Police on Saturday, bus owners also raised their concerns about cop excesses. Top officials told them that action would be taken on sergeants if evidence with specific complaints reaches them. DC (Traffic) Shrikant Jagannathrao Yeilwad discussed passenger feedback with bus transporters about complaints of conductors charging "excessively" and forcing passengers to get off "at a spot of their choice". Cops warned that strict action will follow if these basic traffic rules are flouted. "All bus drivers are required to scan their vehicle's designated QR code and install the official tracking application prior to commencing their trips," said Titu Saha of City Suburban Bus Service. Cops start arresting bus drivers for rash driving to make city roads safer
Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police will now arrest bus drivers if they drive dangerously, in addition to imposing steep fines and recommending the temporary suspension of licences. According to the police, dangerous driving will include zigzag overtakes, jumping red signals, or driving well above the maximum speed limit. Even not allowing passengers to get on or off at the designated bus stop will amount to dangerous driving. The driver will be charged under BNS 281, pertaining to rash or negligent driving or riding on a public way. Although a similar drive began in 2021, it was discontinued following protests from bus operators. The first such case was registered at the Entally police station on Monday after the driver failed to stop at the designated bus stop. "It was around 8:45 am on Monday at the CIT Road-Ananda Palit Road crossing that I found a bus moving from north to south did not stop at the Paddapukur Island bus stop. The driver, Laxmi Kant Shaw, was arrested," the arrest memo stated. Senior officers are likely to meet over this issue since commissioner Manoj Verma has asked his officers at the monthly crime conference to take effective measures to keep the number of accidents at a minimum. Sources in the traffic police, however, said that a quick-fix solution will not be possible, but spot action will make drivers responsible. "Commercial vehicle drivers pass all fines to owners. That does not serve the purpose," said an officer. According to the police, if speeding can be curbed amongst commercial vehicle drivers, the wrong notion of blaming each accident on them will stop. "Accidents do not always happen due to negligence on the driver's part, and they often get blamed for no fault of theirs. The fact remains that pedestrians and passengers too come near the front left corner of the bus, which is traditionally a blind spot for the drivers. Additionally, on several occasions, resoled tyres and the condition of roads contribute to accidents. But by making spot arrests, we can at least send the message and make our intentions of making the roads safer clear to the citizens," said an officer.
