PlayStation Plus Free Games May 2025: Predictions, Rumors, Leaks And More

Forbes27-04-2025

May is almost upon us, and with it a brand new lineup of free PlayStation Plus Essential games just in time for Memorial Day and the end of the school year. What should gamers expect this coming month? Only a few days of May remain.
April's PS Plus Essential lineup included RoboCop: Rogue City, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth Hacker's Memory. That's quite the mouthful, though not a particularly compelling lineup. Not bad, by any means, but nothing all that exciting.
Last year's May lineup included FC24, Ghostrunner II, Tunic and Destiny 2: Lightfall. Hopefully this year's is as good.
Read on for more information on next month's PS Plus lineup.
PS Plus is Sony's monthly membership program that grants access to online gaming. You don't need it for streaming movies or TV shows on Netflix and other services, or for free-to-play games like Warzone or Fortnite. Any paid online games, however, require a subscription.
There are three PS Plus tiers—Essential, Extra and Premium—though for the purposes of this post we're only discussing the Essential tier's free monthly games. Following a big price-hike, these tiers cost: PS Plus Essential — $79.99/year; PS Plus Extra — $134.99/year; PS Plus Premium — $159.99/year.
Sony typically reveals the following month's games on the last Wednesday of the month, though this isn't always the case. The actual rule of thumb is that the new lineup always releases on the first Tuesday of the month and the games are revealed the previous Wednesday.
This means, we'll get our April reveal on Wednesday, April 30th and the games will release on Tuesday, May 6th.
We actually do have a leak to share this month. It appears one of my favorite horror games of all time could be headed to May's PS Plus lineup. The Until Dawn remake, which released in 2024, might be one of next month's games. You can read more about that right here. Given that the movie adaptation just hit theaters, and isn't doing all that well, releasing the game might be a good bit of cross-promotion for the film.
Beyond this, there really aren't any new game releases that would lineup with a May 6th release date, though it's always possible we'll get a stealth release of something we didn't know was coming. Mostly, we just have predictions and wish-list games to go off of. I could see Sony releasing The Last Of Us Part II to cross-promote the HBO series, but that feels like a long-shot. Here are some of my guesses:

If You Enjoyed ‘Dept Q', Don't Sleep on New Prestige Crime Series ‘Smoke'

There's a lot of noise around the big blockbusters coming out right now – Fast cars! Dinosaurs! Jonathan Bailey's flip flops! – but while the cinemas are busy whipping themselves into a frenzy, a new prestige drama is quietly dropping onto television screens. As Netflix's recent Dept Q showed, a high-calibre, low-key crime thriller can scratch a different kind of itch, and if you've burned your way through that one, you're in luck: another superior offering is on its way. Smoke, which consists of nine hour-long episodes, isn't set in dreary old Britain/Scotland, but takes place in dreary young America, in an unspecified state. It does, however, star several British actors, including a chisel-jawed Taron Egerton in the lead, who also executively produces the series. Egerton plays Dave Gudsen, an amiable and ominously named firefighter turned arson investigator who is wrestling with memories of the traumatic conflagration that ended his former career. Dave is also getting flak (I stopped myself saying 'heat' – you're welcome) from his boss (an excellent Greg Kinnear) for failing to identify the two serial arsonists who are running rampant through the local area. One of them, 'The Divide and Conquer' arsonist, is setting off simultaneous fires in multiple public locations including supermarkets, so that the fire departments are stretched beyond capacity. The other, the 'Milkjug' guy, is burning down ordinary people's houses with cooking oil, though viewers are given more than a tip-off of who that might be with the introduction of downtrodden fry cook Freddy (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine). Dave, however, is having minimal success tracking down either culprit – in fact, he seems rather distracted by his own literary ambitions, as he's got a schlocky fictionalised memoir on the go – and the situation is raging out of control. The corporation that owns the supermarkets isn't happy and is threatening to take action against the whole department; that, if not people's houses burning down, might be what's needed to light a firecracker up Dave's... (sorry but it's so hard!). What does Dave need? Why, a partner of course! And preferably one towards whom he can feel mild animosity, if not outright contempt. Enter Michelle Calderon (another conspicuous name, from the Spanish for 'cauldron'), played by the impressively self-contained Jurnee Smollett, a detective from a different police force who has been assigned to assist Dave for reasons that aren't entirely clear. Michelle has secrets, including a toxic affair with her former boss (another Brit, Rafe Spall) and some fire-related trauma from her earlier life. She's doing her best to block it out – mostly by exercise – but the past, as we know, doesn't like to stay buried. Of course these elements are all familiar, some might say hackneyed, tropes of the crime genre, but what elevates Smoke – which is based on the true-crime podcast Firebug – is the quality of its cast and, thanks to writer Dennis Lehane (Gone Baby Gone, Shutter Island), who created and wrote the series, its big-swinging script. 'Fire doesn't give a fuck about your wallet, or the size of your gun, or the size of your dick you wish was the size of your gun,' narrates Egerton, presumably quoting from the book Dave's writing in giant letters in his notepad (maybe it's not so bad after all!). It's punchy stuff. Smoke looks great too – all desaturated compositions of sickly grey-greens, with the striking billows of pale yellow when a fire is burning white-hot. And fire really is staggering beautiful, as much as it is terrifying and obliterating and all the other things that get writer-mode Dave so hot under the collar. It's certainly a change to have a drama that focuses on ash dispersal rather than blood spatter. (For a bit of bonus cred, the title track, over elegant sequences of smouldering pages, is performed by Radiohead's Thom Yorke.) That said, there are no dinosaurs, or F1 cars, or flip-flops. But Smoke does have tension, and great performances, and slow-burn simmer. Also, if you stick with it, the promise of some serious twists (and John Leguziamo!) to come. How Are ‘Squid Game' Season 3's VIPs Still This Awful?

Squid Game I am currently halfway through season 3 of Squid Game, which was released yesterday and is (maybe) the final run of the series. I think it's quite good so far, and episode 2 in particular is easily one of the best of the entire show. However, by episode 3, you run into an old, hard-to-believe problem: the arrival of the VIPs in their gold animal masks that have the absolute worst dialogue and delivery of the entire series. It's to the point where it's so jarring it takes you out of the entire episode, which is filled with compelling performances from its Korean cast. Spoilers follow. The question is…how did this happen again? After the VIPs were lambasted in the wake of season 1, how did they get this group of villains so wrong yet again? This time, there's an American, a Brit or two and possibly a woman from Japan. The difference this time is that they got to 'participate' in the second game by being part of the clean-up crew that goes around shooting players who failed the game. The dialogue is horrific. It's not just the writing, which is, in fact, terrible; it's the delivery and the fact that this is English dialogue that somehow sounds like it's dubbed over itself to make it sound like someone recording separately from a sound booth. Which, for whatever reason, is probably what happened. Squid Game These are the exact same complaints about the season 1 VIPs, and while there is some speculation this is done on purpose to be campy like past genre films, that does not seem to be the case. There was actually an interview done with one of the actors who explained why this was so weird and bad. This is from the Guardian and ran shortly after season 1 was released: 'It's different for every show, but non-Korean performers often act with dialogue that is translated by a non-native – sometimes even by Google Translate – so it can sound unnatural,' he says. 'Often we don't have the scripts for the rest of the show,' he adds. 'We are only given our scenes, so we have no idea of the tone.' 'We were all wearing very heavy plaster masks, and sitting on couches that were at least 20-30ft away from the closest VIP. We all had to yell our lines vaguely into the air, which added to the weird tonality of the delivery.' That sounds like exactly what's still happening, right down to the distance between the VIPs, and it's impossible to imagine there was no way to fix this from season 1. The explanations are that they did it on purpose and left it this bad despite the blowback, or they simply screwed up again and did not learn their lesson. Again, the rest of the show is great so far, but once again, the VIPs are the low point and so bad they make the rest of the episodes worse. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
