UK Health Security Agency: Spread of new COVID variant 'Stratos'

Saba Yemen15 hours ago
London – SABA:
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced the rapid spread of a new COVID-19 variant known as 'Stratos', which has now become a notable proportion of coronavirus infections across the United Kingdom.
In a statement issued Thursday, the agency said that recent genomic analyses showed that the XFG strain and its sub-lineages are now the most prevalent in sequenced samples.
According to official data, the XFG and XFG.3 subvariants accounted for approximately 40% of total COVID-19 infections by the end of June—a significant increase from just 10% in May.
'Stratos' is a recombinant subvariant of the highly contagious Omicron lineage, labeled as a so-called 'Frankenstein variant' due to its hybrid nature. It emerged from a genetic fusion between two highly transmissible subvariants: LF.7 and LP.8.1.2, resulting in this new hybrid strain.
Health experts have warned that Stratos could be more virulent and transmissible than previous strains, due to its mutations that enhance immune evasion—whether from prior infections or vaccinations.

'Palestinian Ahrar' Warns of Imminent Catastrophe Threatening Thousands of Patients and Wounded in Gaza

Occupied Qud – SABA: The Palestinian Ahrar Movement warned on Tuesday of an imminent catastrophe threatening the lives of thousands of patients and injured individuals in the Gaza Strip, due to the Zionist enemy's continued closure of border crossings and its refusal to allow the entry of medical supplies, medicines, and essential healthcare equipment. In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA), the movement described the Israeli actions as a step toward completing the genocide against the Palestinian people. The movement held the Zionist enemy fully responsible for the worsening health and humanitarian disaster, putting the lives of hundreds of thousands of children, women, the elderly, and youth in grave danger due to neglect and the lack of food, medicine, and clean water. It called on the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and all international humanitarian and health organizations to urgently intervene to stop the genocide and ethnic cleansing, and to pressure Israel to lift its unjust blockade on Gaza. The statement also demanded the opening of all border crossings and the unrestricted entry of medical supplies, health equipment, humanitarian aid, and fuel, in accordance with international and humanitarian law. The Palestinian Ahrar Movement stressed that the international community's silence in the face of these crimes amounts to unacceptable complicity. Palestinian Administrative Detainee from Jenin Martyred in Israeli Hospital

Ramallah – SABA: The Palestinian Civil Affairs Authority informed both the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Club of the martyrdom of administrative detainee Luay Faisal Muhammad Nasrallah (22 years old) from Jenin, who passed away on Monday at Soroka Hospital in the Israeli entity after being transferred from Negev Prison. No further details have yet been released about the circumstances of his death. The Commission and the Prisoners Club explained that Nasrallah had been held under administrative detention by the Israeli occupation authorities since March 26, 2024, and he now joins the list of martyrs of the prisoners' movement—victims of systematic crimes committed by the Israeli prison system, particularly since the ongoing genocide began. These crimes include torture, medical negligence, and starvation. They added that Negev Prison, where Nasrallah had been held, is known as one of the worst Israeli prisons for human rights abuses. The continued spread of scabies (Sarcoptes scabiei) in the facility has been turned into a tool of deliberate harm by the prison administration. Nasrallah, according to his family, had no prior health issues before his arrest. With the martyrdom of Nasrallah, the number of Palestinian prisoners and detainees known to have been killed since the genocide began rises to 73—those whose identities are confirmed despite the ongoing crime of enforced disappearance. This phase marks one of the bloodiest in the history of the Palestinian prisoners' movement and the Palestinian people as a whole. Since 1967, the total number of known prisoner martyrs has now reached 310. The Commission and the Prisoners Club stressed that the growing number of martyrs among detainees is reaching alarming levels as thousands remain imprisoned and are subjected to ongoing systematic crimes, including torture, abuse of all forms, medical crimes, sexual assaults, and deliberate exposure to life-threatening and infectious diseases such as scabies. They also face unprecedented deprivation policies. They described Nasrallah's death as another crime in the record of Israeli brutality, where killing prisoners has become a deliberate objective. This crime represents yet another face of the broader ongoing genocide. The Commission and the Club held the Israeli occupation fully responsible for Nasrallah's martyrdom and renewed their call to the international human rights community to take decisive actions to hold Israeli leaders accountable for war crimes. They urged the imposition of international sanctions on the Israeli entity to end its impunity and restore credibility to international law and human rights mechanisms, which have thus far failed in the face of genocide.
