24 Killed as Floods Sweep Across Pakistan
At least 24 people, half of them children, have died in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in northwestern and eastern Pakistan, according to emergency management officials.
The extreme weather, which began Wednesday, marks the onset of the country's annual monsoon season.
A report issued late Friday by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
confirmed
that 11 people were killed in the past 24 hours alone.
Among the victims were four children and three women, while six others were injured. Most of the casualties occurred in the Swat Valley, where flash floods swept away families living along riverbanks, according to local media.
The floods have also caused significant property damage. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 56 homes were damaged, including six that were completely destroyed, the PDMA report added.
In Punjab, Pakistan's most populous province with a population of around 130 million, the Disaster Management Authority reported 13 fatalities since Wednesday. Among them were eight children, who died when roofs or walls collapsed under the weight of the rain. The adult victims were killed in sudden floods that struck rivers in the region, local officials confirmed.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that the risk of further heavy rainfall and flash flooding remains high across several regions, particularly through Tuesday.

Half of Europe at Severe Heat Risk by 2050
Israa Farhan An extraordinary heatwave is sweeping across Europe, North Africa, North America, the Middle East, and Central Asia, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported Monday in Geneva. The WMO warned that rising temperatures are intensifying heat stress and contributing to higher mortality rates, particularly in urban areas. According to the report, by 2050, nearly 50% of Europe 's population could face extreme risk from high temperatures, especially in the southern, eastern, and western parts of the continent. The agency linked the escalating intensity and frequency of heatwaves to human-induced climate change, emphasising that prolonged heat spells are becoming the new norm. It labelled extreme heat a 'silent killer' and urged countries to implement early-warning systems and national emergency plans to safeguard lives. The WMO explained that the current heatwave is being driven by a persistent high-pressure system trapping hot air from North Africa over Europe. As a result, several countries are experiencing record-breaking temperatures not only in July — typically the hottest month in the Northern Hemisphere — but also unusually in June. Spain reported temperatures of 46°C in the south, while Portugal, Italy, and Greece recorded similarly high figures. 2 Dead in Wildfire Amid Record Heatwave Across Spain
Israa Farhan Two people have been confirmed dead following a wildfire in Lleida province, Catalonia, in northeastern Spain, as the country grapples with an unprecedented heatwave sweeping across much of Europe. Emergency and fire services issued a statement confirming the discovery of two bodies near the town of Coscó. The tragic incident occurred as multiple wildfires ignited in the region, forcing local authorities to order approximately 14,000 residents to remain indoors for safety. Catalonia's regional leader, Salvador Illa, expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, which come amid an escalating environmental and public health crisis. Earlier in the day, a separate tragedy was reported in the region when a two-year-old child died after being left inside a parked car under the sun in the city of Valls, north of Tarragona. The fires come as Spain endures one of its most intense heatwaves on record. In early July 2025, temperatures soared beyond 46°C in parts of the country such as Huelva, pushing emergency services to the limit. Spain also recorded its hottest June in history, with an average temperature of 23.6°C, while Mediterranean Sea surface temperatures have reached record highs, fuelling further climate concerns. According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, Europe is heating faster than the global average, with heatwaves starting earlier, lasting longer, and posing increasing health and environmental risks. The World Health Organization has warned of a significant rise in heat-related fatalities, projecting that more than 4,500 people could die in Europe in the coming days. Authorities are urging preventive measures including staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor exposure during peak heat hours, and prioritising the safety of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses. Yara Sameh The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) predicts hot to extremely hot, humid weather will prevail across the country during Wednesday's daylight hours. The weather will seem hotter due to the high humidity levels, which will push up the heat index 2-3 degrees. The country will also witness mist on agricultural and highway roads from the north of the country to Cairo, North Coast, Lower Egypt, Canal Cities, and Central Sinai. Wind will occur occasionally across the country. Furthermore, the Mediterranean Sea will experience low to moderate waves ranging between 1.25 and 2.25 meters in height, varying between northeast and northwest surface winds. The Red Sea will experience low to moderate waves, ranging between 1.5 and 2 meters in height varying between northwest and southwest surface winds. Moderately hot weather is also expected to prevail in Egypt at night and in the early hours.
