Three Spartans listed in the field for the 2025 Rocket Mortgage Classic
Starting on Thursday, the PGA Tour is returning to Detroit, for the Rocket Mortgage Classic at the Detroit Golf Club. This will be the seventh edition of the tournament in Detroit, the PGA Tour's return to Michigan.
For the event coming to Detroit, the Spartans are going to be nicely represented, with there being a trio of players from the Michigan State golf program set to play in the event.
Ryan Brehm, a long time PGA Tour veteran, and a 2008 graduate of Michigan State that helped lead MSU to three Big Ten Championships, will be the Spartans headliner in the event. The one-time PGA Tour winner, and Mt. Pleasant native, will look to tally his second win while in Detroit.
James Piot will also make his return to the PGA Tour. The 2021 US Amateur Champion and a 2021 MSU graduate, Piot played in the Masters Tournament and the US Open with his amateur status after winning the 2021 US Am. After turning pro, he played on the LIV Golf Tour for a year. He has joined the field as an unrestricted sponsors exemption.
Ashton McCulloch is the final Spartan in the field. A 2025 graduate, McCulloch still has his amateur status, and will be making his fourth start on the PGA Tour. It is expected that he will likely turn pro following this event, where he got in with a sponsors exemption.

Davis Thompson makes three eagles in just eight holes at Rocket Classic
The skies were clear but lightning figuratively struck twice Saturday at Detroit Golf Club as a second golfer in the 2025 Rocket Classic made three eagles in one round. Atlanta native Davis Thompson, 26, became the second golfer in two days to drop three eagles in a single round at the PGA Tour's Rocket Classic in Detroit during Saturday's action. Before Philip Knowles did it Friday in the second round, the feat had never been accomplished during the previous six years of the Rocket. It had only happened once on the PGA Tour in 2025: Chandler Phillips did it in Round 1 at the Players Championship. Thompson's three eagles were even more rare because all three came on the front nine — in his first eight holes. Thompson, who started the day at 8-under, six shots back of the leaders, had his first eagle on the first hole, where he hit a 303-yard drive. His 80-yard wedge fell in for a deuce on the short par-4. He sank a birdie on the par-5 fourth, bogeyed Nos. 5 and 6, and then made back-to-back eagles on the par-5 seventh and short par-4 eighth. No. 7 has been a popular eagle this week, and Thompson took advantage. A 316-yard drive and 234-yard approach shot gave him a 37-foot putt, which he drained to recover from the bogeys. The 352-yard par-4 eighth hole is guarded by sand traps on each side, and though many players have birdied it, Thompson defeated the hole by simply driving the ball 344 yards to 7 feet. He capitalized with his third eagle of the day to climb to 5 under par on the round and 13-under total. He bogeyed the par-3 ninth to shoot a 4-under 32 on the front. Thompson then bounced back with a birdie on the par-4 No. 10. Thompson moved up 32 spots with his performance on the front nine and inside the top 10 as the leaders teed off. Michigan State hockey commit Eric Nilson picked by Anaheim Ducks in 2025 NHL Entry Draft
We have selected Swedish center Eric Nilson with the 45th overall pick! #NHLDraft | @Honda Another future Spartan has been selected in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Michigan State hockey commit Eric Nilson has been selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Nilson -- who is considered a center -- was picked by the Ducks with the No. 45 overall pick. Nilson committed to Michigan State last month, and is expected to join the Spartans roster for the upcoming season. He is a 2007-born native of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, but coming from Swedish heritage. Nilson is the son of former NHL player Marcus Nilson, who played 10 seasons in the league, racking up 270 points. Nilson is one of many current or future Spartans that were selected so far in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. Philadelphia Flyers pick MSU hockey forward Shane Vansaghi in 2025 NHL Draft
Another Michigan State hockey player is off the board in the 2025 NHL Draft. Michigan State forward Shane Vansaghi was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the second round of the NHL Draft on Saturday. The Flyers selected Vansaghi with the No. 48 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Vansaghi appeared in all 37 games for the Spartans during his freshman campaign this past season. He net six goals and recorded 10 assists during his freshman season with the Spartans. Per Michigan State's official social media account, Vansaghi is the No. 132 Spartan to be selected in the NHL Draft all-time. He is also the No. 19 second round pick in Michigan State hockey history.
