Will have to watch this space for next few days: EAM Jaishankar on India-US trade deal

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has expressed optimism that ongoing trade negotiations between India and the United States are moving towards a 'successful conclusion', while stressing the importance of finding a 'meeting ground' between the two nations. Speaking at Newsweek's headquarters at One World Trade Center in Manhattan, near the 9/11 Memorial, Jaishankar said: 'You spoke about trade, yes we are in the middle, hopefully, more than the middle, of a very intricate trade negotiation.' 'Obviously, my hope would be that we bring it to a successful conclusion. I cannot guarantee it, because there's another party to that discussion,' he added. His remarks came during a conversation with Newsweek CEO Dev Pragad, as reported by PTI. The minister noted the complexity of the US-India trade talks, while remaining cautiously optimistic about the path ahead: 'And I think we'll have to watch this space for the next few days.' Jaishankar underlined the need for flexibility and understanding from both sides: 'There will have to be give and take. And just like the US or people in the US may have views about India, people in India have views about the US too. And we'll have to find a kind of meeting ground. I believe it's possible.' Responding to a separate question on the state of the India–US negotiations, he said that discussions over the past few months have been 'very, very intense.' 'I can't vouch for which country has had how many rounds, but I suspect we would be among the countries which have done the most,' Jaishankar added. An Indian trade delegation is currently in Washington, DC, where discussions are continuing. Jaishankar acknowledged the technical and detailed nature of the negotiations, particularly with regard to tariff lines and market value projections. 'You are really looking at thousands of lines and doing very intricate trade-offs, both based on what are actually the market values of those lines and what could be the expected market values of those lines. So these are not simple, back-of-the-envelope calculations. Far from it,' he explained. 'So that exercise is going on. If they can get I think a fair balance, you will get an outcome. Obviously, diplomacy is an optimistic profession, so I hope that we will reach there. But things being what they are, it's not done till it's done,' Jaishankar added, according to PTI. During a press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also struck a positive tone, confirming that the deal was close. She said US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick was in the Oval Office with President Donald Trump and that the agreements were in the process of being finalised. 'You'll hear from the President and his team, his trade team very soon when it comes to India,' Leavitt said. Reflecting on the broader India–US relationship over the past two and a half decades — from the Bill Clinton administration to the current Trump presidency — Jaishankar said the trend has remained overwhelmingly positive, driven by structural factors. 'The trend line over the last 25 years has been very strong because there are structural factors that work for the relationship such as economics, technology, education, security and energy,' he said. 'All these are today drivers of the relationship,' he added. Jaishankar acknowledged that disagreements and tensions were inevitable in any long-term bilateral relationship. 'Sure, it happens. It won't be for the first time. In fact, at every one of these presidencies, I can think of something which at that time was a friction point,' he said, recalling tensions over the US's proposed sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.

67 held, 8 minors detained for violence after Chandrashekhar Azad stopped from visiting UP village

The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested 67 persons and detained eight minors in Prayagraj for vandalism after Azad Samaj Party chief and MP Chandrashekhar Azad was stopped from visiting Isota village, PTI reported on Monday. On Sunday, police prevented Azad from going to the village to meet the family of Devishankar, a man who died of burn injuries on April 13. The police had cited security concerns. Devishankar's family has alleged that he was murdered. According to the police, a group that had gathered at the village to meet the MP became agitated upon learning he would not be arriving. They started throwing stones and damaged two police vehicles. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Yamunapar) Vivek Chandra Yadav told PTI that action would be taken against the accused under the National Security Act and the Gangster Act. Compensation for damage to public property would also be recovered from the culprits as per legal provisions, the agency quoted him as saying. Police are trying to ascertain the identity of other individuals involved in the incident using closed-circuit television footage, Yadav added. The National Security Act allows the Centre or state government to order the detention of a person 'with a view to preventing him from acting in any manner prejudicial to the defence of India, the relations with foreign powers, or the security of India'. It may also order detention to prevent them from acting in any manner prejudicial 'to the security of the State', the 'maintenance of public order' or the 'maintenance of supplies and services essential to the community'. The police and district magistrates have the power to issue detention orders, subject to approval by the state government within 12 days.

Digital India initiative touched lives, ushered in new era of empowerment: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said India has made strides in digital payments over 10 years of the Digital India initiative launched in 2015 to improve governance and make technology more accessible. Prime Minister Narendra Modi. (PTI) 'A decade later, we stand witness to a journey that has touched countless lives and ushered in a new era of empowerment. India has made many strides in digital payments, powered by the collective resolve of 140 crore Indians,' Modi wrote on X. In a LinkedIn post, Modi cited the increase in internet connections. 'In 2014, India had around 25 crore internet connections. Today, that number has grown to over 97 crores.' Modi said the next decade will be even more transformative. 'We are moving from digital governance to global digital leadership, from India-first to India-for-the-world.' He shared a MyGovIndia post thread on X, outlining milestones under the Digital India initiative, including rapid 5G rollout, widespread digital payments, and expansion of internet access. 'Whether it's a remote village or a rising startup, Digital India is unlocking opportunity everywhere.' The post said 5G services now cover 95% of India's population, making it one of the fastest rollouts. India offers one of the world's most affordable internet, with data priced below ₹ 10 per GB, less than China's ₹ 32 per GB and South Africa's ₹ 151 per GB, the post said. It added that India has become 'the heartbeat of the world's digital payment systems,' as it now accounts for 50% of the world's real-time digital payments, processing billions of transactions every month. The post said the number of Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts now exceeds the population of most major countries. Over 780 million ABHA accounts have been created so far, laying the foundation for one of the world's largest digital health ecosystems. The post noted that over 42 lakh kilometres of optical fibre have been laid across the country, which is 11 times the distance between Earth and the Moon, under initiatives like BharatNet to support connectivity. As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India data, India has over 1.16 billion mobile connections, with additions of nearly 2 million wireless subscriptions in May alone. In digital commerce, over 700,000 sellers have joined the government-backed Open Network for Digital Commerce within two years, enabling participation from kirana stores, artisans, and small businesses, said the post.
