Comrades Marathon organisers confirm NO deaths during 2025 race

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) early on Wednesday confirmed that there were no reported fatalities during this year's 'down' run between Pietermaritzburg and Durban on Sunday.
According to a Comrades Marathon social media post, some reports suggested two runners had died.
However, the organisers were quick to dispel such rumours.
The post read: 'It has been brought to the attention of the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) that some digital media outlets or accounts are reporting two deaths during the 2025 edition of the race, which took place this past weekend (Sunday, 8 June).
'The CMA and its medical team can confirm that no deaths have been recorded at the 2025 event.
'As can be expected from an event of this nature and size, there were some cases of runners being transferred to hospital from the route, for various medical reasons.
'The CMA medical, emergency, safety and health protocols are excellent, and focused on the safety of all runners,' said CMA General Manager Alain Dalais.
'The CMA distances itself from any fake news or rumours doing the rounds, and suggests that our community rely on reputable sources for information – starting with our own channels,' he added.
This year's men's race was won by South Africa's Tete Dijana, with fellow South African Gerda Steyn taking the title in the women's race.
For Dijana it was a third 'down' run victory, while Steyn triumphed for a third consecutive time – and fourth overall.
Meanwhile, as widely reported, Moira Harding, who went missing after crossing the finish line and was found nearly 15 hours later – and 7km away – remains in hospital having suffered severe hypothermia.
This year's Comrades Marathon was the 98th edition of the famed race.

Kaizer Chiefs delaying another announcement

The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder is no longer with Amakhosi and has reportedly already signed a new contract with a club abroad. Despite his confirmed departure behind the scenes, Kaizer Chiefs have remained publicly silent, mirroring the pattern seen with recent exits like Bongani Sam and Tebogo Potsane — both of whom left weeks before the club formally acknowledged their departures. The Venezuelan international joined Amakhosi ahead of the 2023/24 season and quickly became a fan favourite with his high work rate and ability to arrive in the box to score. Full list: Kaizer Chiefs decisions on 14 players Despite his quality, the 31-year-old missed a chunk of last season out injured. With coach Nasreddine Nabi actively searching for foreign players to become regular starters, Castillo had to make way. While there may be internal reasons for Kaizer Chiefs' timing of announcements — such as pending negotiations or legal formalities — the lack of clear communication continues to fuel speculation and confusion. Until Amakhosi breaks its silence, Castillo's departure remains unofficial in public terms — but within football circles, it's already a done deal. How to watch Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys' High

The two standout rugby schools in South Africa in 2025 - Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys' High - will clash on Saturday. Image: Premier Interschools Home » How to watch Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys' High The two standout rugby schools in South Africa in 2025 - Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys' High - will clash on Saturday. Image: Premier Interschools The Springboks won't be in action for another couple of weeks, but if anyone needs any reminding of how much talent and passion run through all levels of the game, they would do well to observe how Paarl will become the centre of attention for the iconic Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys' High schoolboy derby on Saturday. This remains a major attraction on the rugby calendar every year, and kick off has been confirmed for 16:00. For those who can't be there in person, the match will be screened live on SuperSport channel 216. This year's match will be played in front of a packed stadium, with about 20,000 fans expected, and Paarl Gimnasium director of rugby Pieter Rossouw has likened preparations for Saturday's interschools clash against Paarl Boys' to that of a World Cup. 'For many of the boys, this is the biggest game of their rugby career. It's something they've been dreaming about for a long time,' Rossouw said at a pre-match press conference. 'I think you can compare it to the journey of a World Cup tournament, where guys prepare for four years to play in that final. Similarly, boys come into school in Grade 8 and dream of playing for the 1st XV in that particular [interschools] game.' Meanwhile, Paarl Boys' coach Sean Erasmus believes Saturday's showdown will shine a light on the incredible pool of talent at schoolboy level. 'Among the 30 boys who will play, I believe there could very well be three or four future Springboks,' he said. Erasmus added that Boishaai had learned from last year's disappointing 30-8 defeat to Gimmies. 'We conceded 30 points in the interschools last year and afterwards we talked to each other about how it was an important lesson and what we could take from it. 'It's nice to see how the boys who are now in matric have grown as people.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211. Young Ava hopes to cross Comrades finish line

In her first full CGA cross-country season, Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) youngster Ava Brits is already turning heads. The promising eight-year-old has been making a strong impression in the U8 1km races since her debut at the second league meeting in Kagiso, showing speed, determination and hard work; clear signs of a future star in the making. Whether navigating tricky, slippery corners or powering up hills, Ava, named cross-country runner of the year by her school last year, is proving that passion and performance matter more than age. 'I've always loved running. I was inspired by my dad, who I always watched as he trained for the Comrades Marathon. I often do 5km runs with him,' she said. Although she often feels nervous at the start line, the Ridgewood College Grade Two learner has consistently finished in the top five of her races. She opened her season with a 06:05 for fourth place, followed by 05:56 in the third league in Dobsonville. She clocked 04:35 in league four in Daveyton before a season's best 04:28 in the last league meeting of the season in Brakpan on July 26. 'I enjoy running in the CGA leagues against boys because it's a lot harder than just competing with girls my age. My dad always motivates me by telling me to run my own race.' While many young athletes draw inspiration from professional sports stars, Ava looks up to her Comrades Marathon-running father. 'I love training with him because he always pushes me and reminds me of how good I am. He also tells me to believe in myself and most importantly, to have fun,' she said. Among her big dreams is one close to her heart: completing the Comrades Marathon one day. 'I want to run the Comrades when I'm big. This year I crossed the finish line with my dad in my BNAC kit. It was the best feeling in the world.' Also Read: Sawyer wins race in second cross country league Also Read: Madlabane's winning streak ends
