T'gana CM to meet Union Jal Shakti Minister, discuss river-linking project
The CM, who left for Delhi on Thursday morning, is also expected to meet AICC leaders and other dignitaries in the national capital, official sources said.
The Polavaram-Banakacharla link project is aimed at diverting surplus Godavari water to the drought-hit regions of Andhra Pradesh, a move Telangana argues is detrimental to its water rights.
Reddy, accompanied by state Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, held a meeting on Wednesday with MPs from all parties to gather views on finalising the state's strategy to oppose the project.
Later, speaking to reporters, Revanth Reddy said his government is in the first stage of employing the traditional approach of 'saam, daan, bhed, dand' (conciliation, concession, division and force) to challenge the project through political and legal channels.
The CM has said the state government had swiftly complained to the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) and the Union Minister C R Patil when Naidu mooted the Banakacharla project.
Responding to opposition BRS' criticism that he remained silent while Andhra Pradesh "took away" Godavari water, Revanth Reddy said it was former CM Chandrasekhar Rao who, during a 2016 meeting of the two state chief ministers in Delhi, first proposed utilising the 3,000 TMC of Godavari water flowing into the sea.
"The foundation stone was laid that day. The foundation for the idea of providing water to Rayalaseema (in Andhra Pradesh) by transferring 3,000 TMC Godavari water to Krishna basin was laid that day. This is record of the minutes of that meeting," he said.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had earlier said the Polavaram (Godavari)-Banakacherla project is aimed at taking surplus Godavari waters to the drought-hit regions in the state.
Naidu highlighted that Telangana need not worry as only excess water from the Godavari river will be utilised, which otherwise would drain into the sea.

Kharge to attend Cong village chiefs' meet in Hyderabad; TPCC chief slams Kavitha, BRS
Hyderabad, July 3 (UNI) All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge will be the chief guest at the village presidents' commemoration programme being organised by the Telangana Congress at Lal Bahadur Stadium in Hyderabad on Friday. Addressing the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Thursday, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) President and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud said the event is expected to witness the participation of around 40,000 Congress leaders and workers, including village, mandal, and district presidents, Ministers, MLAs, MPs, and Corporation Chairpersons. Kharge will also address the gathering under the theme Social Justice Samara Bheri and will give key directives to the village-level Congress presidents to strengthen the party at the grassroots. Taking a sharp dig at BRS MLC K Kavitha, Goud described her recent letter to AICC President Kharge as 'strange and ironic.' He questioned whether the letter was written in her capacity as a representative of BRS or on behalf of the cultural wing Jagruthi. 'It is bizarre to see Kavitha, who remained silent for a decade, now suddenly speaking on BC issues,' he remarked. Goud accused Kavitha and BRS of political opportunism, stating, 'What did BRS do for BCs in 10 years of power? Can Kavitha point to a single instance where she raised her voice for BCs? Her sudden concern for BCs is nothing but a survival tactic in a political vacuum.' He reiterated that the Congress Party has always stood firmly with the SC, ST, and BC communities, recalling that it was the Congress that provided 42 per cent reservation for BCs in local bodies, along with key benefits in the fields of education and healthcare. He blamed the BRS for losing power due to misgovernance and failing to address the unemployment crisis. 'Let them show us what they achieved in the last decade. If they must protest, let them hold a 'rail roko' to explain their record,' he said. Commenting on BJP's situation, he said it is unfortunate that the party cannot even appoint a BC leader as its state president, proving its lack of seriousness on social justice. Goud also took on BRS leader T Harish Rao for his comments on Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and water-sharing disputes, accusing Harish of compromising with the Andhra Pradesh government and spreading lies about the Banakacharla project. 'You went around with AP leaders, had fish soup at Roja's house, and compromised Telangana's water share,' he alleged. In a direct jibe at Kavitha, he questioned whether the alleged property-sharing deals within the BRS had fallen apart. 'The people of Telangana will no longer be fooled. The BRS, which betrayed every section of society, has no moral right to seek votes,' he said. Highlighting Congress' welfare schemes, he said, 'We have given Indiramma houses to the poor and distributed Rs 9,000 crore in just 9 days under farmers' welfare. Social justice is possible only with the Congress Party.' He urged party cadres to ensure the grand success of the Social Justice Samara Bheri rally and said the party's Disciplinary Committee would look into MLA Anirudh Reddy's controversial statements. Goud also took a swipe at Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and former CM K Chandrashekar Rao, calling their bond a 'peculiar political friendship' and questioned, 'What is the connection between the secular Congress and the religious ideology-based parties?'. JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala row: K.C. Venugopal slams Suresh Gopi's silence
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary K.C. Venugopal on Thursday (July 3, 2025) strongly criticised the censor board for denying clearance to the film JSK – Janaki Vs State of Kerala and hit out at Union Minister Suresh Gopi, who plays the lead role, for staying silent on the matter. According to sources, the film was denied certification because the name 'Janaki' – another name for goddess Sita — was used for the lead character, a woman fighting a legal battle after being assaulted. "We've heard actor and Union Minister Suresh Gopi say many times that cinema is his lifeblood – like rice is to daily sustenance. Yet, even as a system he is part of throws mud onto that very rice, he remains silent," Mr. Venugopal wrote in a Facebook post. The Alappuzha MP urged Mr. Gopi, an actor-turned politician, to break his silence and speak up for his own film and for his fellow artistes. Mr. Venugopal accused the censor board of attacking artistic freedom. "The stance taken by the censor board sets fire to the very foundation of freedom of expression," he said. "In cinema and literature, creators have the constitutional freedom to choose titles and names. Denying that is an insult to the Constitution itself," he said. Mr. Venugopal pointed out that names such as Ram, Krishna, Sita, and Radha have been used for decades in Indian films, and many popular movies have carried similar names. "Most personal names in India come from Hindu mythology," he said, adding that the Congress governments never allowed the censor board to act in ways that undermined its credibility. He expressed full support for the film and its makers. "Every censor board member who imposed cuts in the name of narrow-minded politics should study the Constitution and the country's history," the Congress leader said. Venugopal also raised concerns over the larger trend. "Even the Mohanlal-starrer Empuraan had to undergo cuts after being screened in theatres," he said. 'Declared agenda' "Where is the BJP taking this country? What kind of fear is forcing artistes to censor their own creations?" Mr. Venugopal asked and demanded that the Central government and the departments concerned clearly state their position. "The government's continued silence, even after the matter reached the courts, is suspicious," he said. "This appears to be a declared agenda – controlling food, clothing, names, and now even art," the AICC general secretary alleged. Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court on Wednesday said it would watch the film on July 5 before deciding on the censor board's demand to change the name 'Janaki'.
