A Minute With: Musician and writer Tim Minchin looks back
LONDON, July 28, 2025 - Tim Minchin's latest album "Time Machine" is a collection of songs that the now successful 49-year-old wrote, but never recorded, back in his twenties, when he couldn't get a record deal. After gaining critical success as a comedian in 2005, the British-Australian Minchin went on to write the music and lyrics for hit West End musical "Matilda the Musical" and signed with record label BMG in 2020. In an interview with Reuters, Minchin reflects on his new record as well as his songwriting and views on social media. Below are excerpts edited for length and brevity. Q: Your album is out, how does that make you feel? "I feel really reflective. But also I've reached a point in my career ... where I just feel like ... here's my offer ... and because I don't read social media anymore and I won't read reviews, it's just out in the world... And hopefully people listen to it." Q: How would you describe your music? "I think the way I use words is slightly different from a lot of singer/songwriters... Most pop songs, they're broad, you can hear in them what you want ... whereas mine are like - ''oh no, this is what the song's about'." Q: Is there a difference writing music for yourself or characters such as Matilda? "I always feel like in a way, I'm placing myself in someone else's shoes... some of my songs are really personal and they're really about me. But it is a craft - songwriting - and that can mean placing yourself in a particular emotional state." Q: What makes you feel inspired at the moment? "My job is to put good ideas into the world and beautiful stories and make people feel things... That job of spreading empathy and joy and laughter and emotion and if I can do that and feel optimistic ... then I'm one person not being a cynic." Q: Do you wish you had released this album in your twenties? "The greatest thing that ever happened to me is not getting success (then) ... it's terrible for people... I'm very happy that I'm just gently putting these songs out into the world (now)."

From I'm A Celebrity winner to Olympic hero & Loose Woman panellist – Celebrity Gladiators line-up revealed
MODEL Vogue Williams tops the bill of super-fit stars taking part in this year's Celebrity Gladiators. The Irish presenter, 39, will be joined on the show by fitness guru Joe Wicks, 39, former Olympic boxer Nicola Adams, 42, and gym-obsessed I'm a Celebrity winner Sam Thompson, 32. Today, the four stars will film the episode — a spin-off of the original Gladiators contest — with the finished show set to air later this year. A TV insider said: 'Last year, producers of the debut celebrity version played it for laughs with three comedians taking part — with hilarious results for viewers. 'But this year they've assembled four celebrities who can give the Gladiators a serious run for their money, and serve up a clash to savour.' In the previous BBC One special, comedians Rob Beckett, 39, Joel Dommett, 40, and Ellie Taylor, 41, and news host Louise Minchin, 56, competed against the elite athletes. Now Vogue, who won the first series of Bear Grylls: Mission Survive, will be among those to face the Gladiators. She has three children with her husband, reality star Spencer Matthews, who broke the record for completing 30 marathons in 30 days last year. Meanwhile Body Coach Joe Wicks, who is married to former Page Three model Rosie Jones, will be cheered on by their three children. During the Covid pandemic, he led online fitness classes. Strictly star Nicola, who won gold at the London and Rio Olympics before retiring, promises to pack a punch. And Sam, crowned King of the Jungle in 2023, has been throwing himself into his fitness regime since his split with ex-girlfriend, former Love Islander Zara McDermott. Two new Gladiators revealed as British rowing champ and super strong weightlifter He has previously run the London Marathon. Filming of the regular Gladiators, now on its third series since its reboot on BBC One, takes place over the next week at Sheffield Arena. It will be out early next year with Bradley Walsh and son Barney returning to host. The second edition of Celebrity Gladiators will air just before. 5 5

Cooking up a storm! First look at series five of ITV show Cooking With The Stars with Love Island favourite, EastEnders legend and popular radio presenter as part of star-studded cast
Cooking With The Stars is set to return to our screens VERY soon. The show, which first aired back in 2021, will be hosted by none other than Emma Willis and Tom Allen. There have been 24 episodes across four series since then. And fans will be very happy to know that the upcoming fifth series of the programme will hit ITV this Sunday (3 August 2025). The famous faces who are taking part will definitely make the season a good watch as they go head to head in a number of cooking battles. EastEnders legend Natalie Cassidy, 42, who recently quit her role as Sonia Fowler on the BBC show after nearly 32 years, will be taking part. Love Island star Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, 30- who first shot to fame in 2018 on the ITV2 show - is another celebrity battling it out for the top spot. Meanwhile Capital Breakfast show radio host Jordan North, 35, is no stranger to a bit of reality television after taking part in I'm A Celebrity back in 2020. So will he be able to cook up a storm in the kitchen? Funnyman and Outnumbered favourite Hugh Dennis, 63, will be taking to the kitchen to show off his best cooking skills. Interiors expert and former Dragon from Dragons' Den Kelly Hoppen, 66, is another celebrity taking part. Media personality Jack Osbourne, 39, son of the late rock legend Ozzy Osbourne, has taken part in various TV shows over the years, including The X Factor, Dancing With The Stars and The Osbournes. Will he be able to impress the judges with his cooking? Former Towie star Jessica Wright, 39, who starred on the programme between 2010 and 2016, is also part of the cast. And will former footballer Shaun Wright-Phillip's stint on the show be as successful as his time on the pitch for the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers? The show's official press release states: 'Across a series of exciting cooking battles, the show will see eight celebrities go head to head in the kitchen as they attempt to go from passionate amateur cooks to restaurant level chefs. 'Each celebrity will be paired with an accomplished chef who will mentor and teach them to produce delicious dishes that will be judged by the other professionals.' At the end of each instalment, the famous faces who land in the bottom two will have to fight it out. Whoever loses the blind tasting judgment from the professional chefs will be voted out. Speaking ahead of her hosting stint earlier this month, Emma previously said: 'I'm absolutely delighted to be back in the kitchen for another series of Cooking With The Stars. 'Every year our celebrities throw themselves into it, and this new line-up is no exception. 'It's always a mix of nerves, excitement, and a few inevitable kitchen catastrophes which makes for brilliant tele. 'I can't wait for everyone to see what culinary delights (and disasters!) our new batch of stars cook up!' Tom added: 'The sheer nerve of these celebrities to step into our kitchen and attempt culinary greatness (or just, you know, edible food) is truly something to behold! 'I am absolutely delighted to once again join Emma to unleash another season of dazzling triumphs and utterly baffling disasters. 'Get ready for a delicious, slightly burnt and completely fabulous ride – that golden frying pan is waiting.' While director of entertainment and daytime commissioning ITV, Katie Rawcliffe, said: 'We are delighted to bring 'Cooking With The Stars' back for another series. 'The partnership with M&S continues to be a recipe for success, and this year viewers can expect even more surprising culinary transformations and laugh-out-loud moments as a fresh set of celebrities step into the kitchen to show what they can bring to the table.' Cooking With The Stars starts this Sunday the 3rd August at 7pm on ITV1, ITVX, STV and STV Player.
