Photograph:OpenAI's incoming CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, sent her first note to staff on Monday, telling employees the tools they're developing 'will unlock more opportunities for more people than any other technology in history.'
'If we get this right, AI can give everyone more power than ever,' Simo wrote, striking a hyper-optimistic tone, according to a copy of the memo viewed by WIRED. 'But I also realize those opportunities won't magically appear on their own.'
Simo previously worked as the CEO of Instacart. Before that, she spent a decade at Meta, where she went from being a product manager on the company's news feed to the head of product for the Facebook app. For the last year, Simo has been a member of OpenAI's board of directors. In her memo, Simo said she'll be starting her role as an OpenAI executive 'in a few weeks.' She'll report directly to CEO Sam Altman.
Simo's primary role will be to lead the startup's business and operational teams, according to Altman's announcement about the hire in May. She'll be responsible for translating OpenAI's research into viable products like ChatGPT, the API (which developers use to build their own tools atop OpenAI's technology), and enterprise tools—and securing high-profile business partnerships.
In the memo, Simo outlines her thinking on how AI will impact knowledge, health, creative expression, economic freedom, time, and support. She promotes a few common ideas that paint a rosy picture of AI: personalized AI tutors, better health data, more opportunities for creative expression, efficiency gains from automation, and AI-powered emotional support (a hotly debated topic).
'My business coach Katia has been transformative to my career, and I've joked with her over the years that everyone needs a 'Katia in their pocket,'' Simo wrote. 'Personalized coaching has obviously been a privilege reserved for a few, but now with ChatGPT, it can be available to many.'
The memo reads like a mission statement, not just for the Applications division, but for OpenAI's broader bet: that it can build tools that feel as personal and indispensable as a search engine or a smartphone. In the memo, Simo positions OpenAI's products as the great equalizer that knocks down society's barriers to knowledge, income, and emotional clarity—though whether it will actually do so remains to be seen.
'AI can compress thousands of hours of learning into personalized insights delivered in plain language, at the pace that suits us, responsive to our specific level of understanding,' Simo writes. 'It doesn't just answer questions – it teaches us to ask better ones. And it helps us develop confidence in areas that once felt opaque or intimidating, growing both personally and professionally.'
The memo also hints at OpenAI's vision for emotional companions. In the closing section, Simo writes that AI coaches 'can be available throughout every day, leverage their full understanding of all aspects of your life to help support you, and bring your subconscious patterns to your consciousness.'
That idea goes hand-in-hand with the rumored hardware device OpenAI is creating with famed designer Jony Ive, which the Wall Street Journal reported will be 'fully aware of a user's surroundings and life.' Altman hasn't shied away from flat out saying the company hopes to build an AI similar to the movie Her, where a lonely man fresh out of a failed marriage turns to a virtual companion named Samantha. That, of course, has also gotten Altman into hot water since critics note the film is more of a cautionary tale than a business opportunity.
The memo was very on brand for an OpenAI executive: optimistic and based largely on future promises. While Altman, Simo's boss, works to coordinate some of the more futuristic ideas, like Stargate and artificial general intelligence, Simo will work to pair the startup's complicated research into real tools for consumers.
'If AI can help people truly understand themselves, it could be one of the biggest gifts we could ever receive,' Simo writes.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Friday that former OpenAI researcher Shengjia Zhao will lead research efforts at the company's new AI unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL). Zhao contributed to several of OpenAI's largest breakthroughs, including ChatGPT, GPT-4, and the company's first AI reasoning model, o1. 'Shengjia co-founded the new lab and has been our lead scientist from day one. Now that our recruiting is going well and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalize his leadership role.' Zhao will set a research agenda for MSL under the leadership of Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI who was recently hired to lead the new unit. The addition of Zhao, who is a reputable research leader known for developing frontier AI models, rounds out the leadership team. To further fill out the unit, Meta has hired several high-level researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Safe Superintelligence, Apple, and Anthropic, as well as pulling researchers from Meta's existing FAIR and GenAI units. Zuckerberg notes in his post that Zhao has pioneered several breakthroughs, including a 'new scaling paradigm.' The Meta CEO is likely referencing Zhao's work on OpenAI's reasoning model, o1, in which he is listed as a foundational contributor alongside OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever. Meta currently doesn't offer a competitor to o1, so AI reasoning models are a key area of focus for MSL. The Information reported in June that Zhao would be joining Meta Superintelligence Labs, alongside three other influential OpenAI researchers, including Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren. Meta has also recruited Trapit Bansal, another OpenAI researcher who worked on AI reasoning models with Zhao, as well as three employees from OpenAI's Zurich office that worked on multimodality. Zuckerberg has gone to great lengths to set MSL up for success. The Meta CEO has been on a recruiting spree to staff up his AI superintelligence labs, which has entailed sending personal emails to researchers and inviting prospects to his Lake Tahoe estate. San Francisco | REGISTER NOW Meta has also upped its investment in cloud computing infrastructure, which should help MSL conduct the massive training runs required to create competitive frontier AI models. By 2026, Zhao and MSL's researchers should have access to Meta's one gigawatt cloud computing cluster, Prometheus, located in Ohio. Once online, Meta will be one of the first technology companies with an AI training cluster of Prometheus' size — one gigawatt is enough energy to power more than 750,000 homes. That should help Meta conduct the massive training runs required to create frontier AI models. With the addition of Zhao, Meta now has two chief AI scientists, including Yann LeCun, the leader of Meta's FAIR. Unlike MSL, FAIR is designed to focus on long-term AI research — techniques that may be used five to 10 years from now. How exactly Meta's three AI units will work together remains to be seen. Nevertheless, Meta now seems to have a formidable AI leadership team to compete with OpenAI and Google.

That alone hints that OpenAI is preparing to roll out a more powerful assistant; one designed to improve in areas where earlier versions have started to plateau. The report suggests GPT-5 blends OpenAI's traditional GPT architecture with elements from its reasoning-focused 'o' models. That would give it the flexibility to adjust how much effort it puts into different tasks, doing quick work on easy queries, but applying deeper reasoning to complex problems. A person who tested GPT-5 told The Information it outperformed Claude Sonnet 4 in side-by-side comparisons. That's just one data point and Claude Opus 4 is still considered Anthropic's most advanced model, but it signals OpenAI is serious about reclaiming ground in this space. Here's where things get a little murky. Some researchers speculate GPT-5 might not be a single, brand-new model, but instead a routing system that dynamically selects the best model, GPT-style or reasoning-based, depending on your prompt. If that's true, it could signal a shift away from scaling traditional LLMs toward optimizing post-training performance through reinforcement learning and synthetic data. That's where models are fine-tuned using expert feedback after training and it's an area where OpenAI has been investing heavily. If GPT-5 lives up to early reports, it could help OpenAI win back developer mindshare and chip away at Anthropic's dominance in coding assistants; a market that could be worth hundreds of millions annually. It would also strengthen OpenAI's pitch to enterprise users and give its chip suppliers, like Nvidia, another reason to celebrate. For users of ChatGPT, the biggest change could be more efficient and accurate answers across the board, especially for bigger tasks that current models still struggle with. We'll have to wait and see what OpenAI officially announces in the coming weeks, but if GPT-5 is as strong as it sounds, the next wave of AI tools could be the most capable yet. Mark Zuckerberg names ex-OpenAI employee chief scientist of new Meta AI lab

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday said Shengjia Zhao, the co-creator of OpenAI's ChatGPT, will serve as the chief scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs. Zuckerberg has been on a multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence hiring blitz in recent weeks, highlighted by a $14 billion investment in Scale AI. In June, Zuckerberg announced a new organization called Meta Superintelligence Labs that's made up of top AI researchers and engineers. Zhao's name was listed among other new hires in the June memo, but Zuckerberg said Friday that Zhao co-founded the lab and "has been our lead scientist from day one." Zhao will work directly with Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI who is acting as Meta's chief AI officer. "Shengjia has already pioneered several breakthroughs including a new scaling paradigm and distinguished himself as a leader in the field," Zuckerberg wrote in a social media post. "I'm looking forward to working closely with him to advance his scientific vision." In addition to co-creating ChatGPT, Zhao helped build OpenAI's GPT-4, mini models, 4.1 and o3, and he previously led synthetic data at OpenAI, according to Zuckerberg's June memo. Meta Superintelligence Labs will be where employees work on foundation models such as the open-source Llama family of AI models, products and Fundamental Artificial Intelligence Research projects. The social media company will invest "hundreds of billions of dollars" into AI compute infrastructure, Zuckerberg said earlier this month. "The next few years are going to be very exciting!" Zuckerberg wrote Friday.
