Russian woman found living in Karnataka's Gokarna cave with two daughters, rescued

The Hindu6 hours ago
A spiritually inclined Russian woman and her two young children were rescued from a remote cave nestled in the serene yet treacherous Ramatirtha hills of Kumta taluk in Uttara Kannada district, a police officer said on Saturday (July 12, 2025).
Police identified the woman as 40-year-old Nina Kutina alias Mohi, who had journeyed from Russia to India on a business visa and found her way to the sacred coastal town of Gokarna via Goa, drawn deeply by the Hinduism and Indian spiritual traditions.
Her children had accompanied her into the heart of the forest, where they had been living in complete seclusion for nearly two weeks.
The small family had made a humble home inside a natural cave surrounded by dense woods and steep slopes.
There, Mohi kept a Rudra idol and spent her days in 'Puja' and meditation, seeking spiritual peace amidst nature. Her only companions were her two little children.
It was during a routine patrol on Friday (July 11, 2025), following a recent landslip, that Circle Police Inspector Sridhar and his team spotted clothes hanging outside the cave.
Curious and cautious, the officers made their way through the thick shrubs of Ramatirtha Hill and found Mohi and her two children in the cave.
Uttara Kannada Superintendent of Police M. Narayana, speaking to PTI on Saturday (July 12, 2025), said, 'Our patrolling team spotted a saree and other clothes being hung for drying outside the cave in Ramatirtha Hill. When they went there, they spotted Mohi along with her children.'
He added, 'It was quite surprising how she and her children survived in the woods and what they ate. Thankfully, nothing untoward happened to her or the children during their time in the forest.' According to him, the woman may have reached the cave from Goa.
It was also found that her visa had expired in 2017. How long she has been living in India remains unclear, he added.
Mr. Narayana further said, 'We have arranged her stay in an ashram, run by a Sadhvi. We have initiated the process to take her to Bengaluru from Gokarna and begin the deportation process.' With the help of a local NGO, the Russian Embassy was contacted and formalities were set in motion to deport her.

Eyewitness in 1984 Pul Bangash Gurudwara case denies ‘falsely' implicating Tytler

The 70-year-old woman eyewitness had also claimed before Special Judge Jitendra Singh that she kept mum, fearing for her only son's life and revealed Tytler's name for the first time in 2016 to the CBI after her son passed away. Earlier on Friday, Harpal Kaur Bedi, an eyewitness to the killing of three men by a mob that torched the north Delhi gurdwara during the riots, had deposed that she had seen Tytler instigating the mob and asking them to 'loot and kill the Sikhs'. New Delhi, Jul 12 (PTI) A key witness in the Pul Bangash Gurdwara case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots on Saturday told a Delhi court that she was not pressured by the CBI or Sikh leaders to 'falsely' implicate Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. During her cross-examination by Tytler's counsel on Saturday, Bedi said, 'It is wrong to suggest that I was pressurised by the CBI or leaders of the Sikh community to name Jagdish Tytler in the case to falsely implicate him. 'It is further wrong to suggest that my entire testimony is a deliberate attempt to frame accused Jagdish Tytler in the case. It is wrong to suggest that my testimony is false and fabricated.' The court has posted the matter for recording the statement of another witness on July 21. The CBI had on May 20, 2023, filed a chargesheet against Tytler in the case. Tytler 'incited, instigated and provoked the mob assembled at Pul Bangash Gurudwara Azad Market' on November 1, 1984, that resulted in the burning down of the Gurdwara and the killing of three Sikhs — Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Gurcharan Singh — the CBI alleged in its chargesheet. The CBI had also said in its chargesheet that Tytler came out of a white Ambassador car in front of the gurdwara on November 1, 1984, and instigated a mob by shouting 'kill the Sikhs, they have killed our mother'. Anti-Sikh riots had erupted in several parts of the country in the aftermath of the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. Police in UP's Sitapur launch probe after video shows man confronting SI over bribe

The video shows Deepak Mishra of the Reusa police station area confronting SI Srinivas Pande, alleging that the latter had demanded a Rs 25,000 bribe to settle a dispute arising from an accident involving Mishra's tractor and a pickup vehicle that had occurred in the past. According to police, the incident occurred on Thursday evening in the Tambour police station area. Sitapur (UP), Jul 12 (PTI) Sitapur police have launched an inquiry after a video went viral purportedly showing a man confronting a sub-inspector (SI) over a bribe payment. Mishra told media he has already paid Rs 15,000 of the demanded sum. In the video, Mishra is seen physically stopping Pande's motorcycle, demanding the return of his alleged bribe money. A heated argument ensued, which was eventually diffused by bystanders, leading to Mishra letting go of the bike. Following the video, police initiated an inquiry under Leharpur circle officer. Officials stated that preliminary findings suggest the parties in the original accident had settled the matter with Deepak. In a statement issued on Saturday, Sitapur police asserted that Mishra appeared to be in a 'drunken state' in the video, adding that his allegations of the SI taking money are 'insufficient evidence' to prove the claim. The police are continuing their investigation into the matter. PTI COR CDN AMJ AMJ This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.
