Klopp 'heartbroken' by Diogo Jota's death

eNCA2 days ago
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was "heartbroken" to learn Diogo Jota, who he signed in 2020, had died with his younger brother Andre in a car crash on Thursday.
Diogo Jota, 28, died alongside Andre after their vehicle veered off a motorway in northern Spain before bursting into flames.
Klopp, who is Red Bull's "head of global soccer", persuaded the Liverpool board to pay £45 million ($62 million) for Diogo Jota after he impressed at Wolves.
"This is a moment where I struggle!" Klopp posted on Instagram.
"There must be a bigger purpose! But I can't see it! I'm heartbroken to hear about the passing of Diogo and his brother Andre.
"Diogo was a not only a fantastic player, but also a great friend, a loving and caring husband and father!
"We will miss you so much! All my prayers, thoughts and power to Rute, the kids, the family, the friends and everyone who loved them! Rest in peace -- Love."
Diogo Jota was labelled an "exceptional player, exceptional boy," by Klopp early on in the player's spell at Liverpool.
Jota took little time to deliver some return on Liverpool's investment, becoming the first player in the club's history to score in his first four home games.
He was a key part of Klopp's side that won the League Cup and FA Cup in 2021/22, narrowly missing out on the Premier League and Champions League for what would have been an unprecedented quadruple.

Exemplary Dembele steps up again to inspire depleted PSG

Paris St Germain snatched a 2-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday to reach the Club World Cup semi-finals, with Ousmane Dembele embodying the composure of Luis Enrique's side as he sealed the victory when his team were down to nine men. Dembele found the back of the net six minutes into added time after being superbly set up by Achraf Hakimi and the French forward also shone defensively by pressing relentlessly and initiating the move that led to his decisive goal. "I'd give the Ballon d'Or to Mr Ousmane Dembele," coach Luis Enrique said after PSG's Champions League final win over Inter Milan. "The way he that can be worth the Ballon d'Or. This is how you lead a team." Dembele proved his coach right once again against Bayern. Rested for the group stage after sustaining a thigh injury and only coming off the bench after halftime in the last 16 and in the quarter-final, Dembele brought an incredible energy to a team who had been dominated by Bayern. Off the bench to seal the deal ⚡ Ousmane Dembélé wins it for nine-man PSG 👏 #SSFootball | #FIFACWC | #CWC2025 — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) July 5, 2025 "It's an important period for us. We had a score to settle with Bayern after the 2020 (Champions League) final (won by Bayern 1-0) and after they beat us earlier this season," captain Marquinhos said. "We want to win this competition." PSG went ahead through Desire Doue, his first goal in the tournament. "I try to help the team by scoring, but also with my efforts, notably defensively," Doue said. PSG, seeking a quadruple of titles after winning the Champions League, French Cup and the Ligue 1 title, will face Borussia Dortmund or Real Madrid for a place in the final. They will be without centre back Willian Pacho and defender Lucas Hernandez, who picked up straight red cards after Doue's opening goal.

Shining Verstappen shades Piastri for pole at Silverstone

Max Verstappen produced one of the finest and fastest qualifying laps of his career on Saturday to seize pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix and demonstrate why he is the hottest property in Formula One. The four-time world champion was struggling with a strong wind and cool and damp conditions after choosing a low downforce set-up that trimmed his wings but enabled higher speed on the straights. Before his final run of a tense and closely-fought qualifying hour, Verstappen was two-tenths slower than McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri, but the Dutchman powered to a fastest lap of one minute and 24.892 seconds to beat the Australian by 0.103 seconds. "You went motor racing Max!" said his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, his deadpan delivery hiding Red Bull's delight as the team fight to find the performance that will ensure their star driver stays with them next year. The 27-year-old Dutchman, who has declared he wants to stay, has been linked with Mercedes, whose team boss Toto Wolff has confirmed making contact. Unconfirmed Italian media reports this week claimed Verstappen had agreed to the move. Verstappen did his talking on the track, claiming his third pole at Silverstone and the 44th of the career with a virtuoso lap to keep alive faint hopes of defending his drivers' title in the second half of the season. Weather permitting, a third British victory would help him trim his 61-point deficit to Piastri but if it rains, as forecast, Verstappen's set-up might leave him vulnerable to his rivals including Lando Norris, in the second McLaren, who is 15 points behind Piastri in the title race and third on the grid. "The changes helped a lot and the car definitely turned in better," said Verstappen. "On my last lap, it all came together and the balance was much better and we were fast on the straights, but the high-speed corners were more difficult. "We are pushing for more performance. It was tricky out there with the wind as the car is so sensitive to it. We have to wait to see what tomorrow will do and if there's rain around or not. "I'm happy with qualifying. It's a big boost for the team as well and I'm excited to go racing tomorrow. We'll try! We are going to have fun and try to do the best we can." - 'It's tough' - Piastri was less happy. "I was trying to think of how I was going to go faster and I didn't," he said. "The last lap was a little bit messy, but it's been tight all weekend. "I think my first lap was very I left a little bit on the table." "It's tough, especially when you think it's a good lap. You don't want to overdo it and try and go over the limit. There were a couple of corners where maybe I was a bit safe on the way in and tried to make up for it on the way out and it didn't quite work." Norris was third in the second McLaren, a tenth adrift. "It was tough," Norris said. "We are not just fast enough today, but it's all good fun and I am happy with third. Credit to Max, he did a great job. It's going to be fun tomorrow, a good battle." George Russell was next in a Mercedes. The Ferraris of seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc filled the third row. Kimi Antonelli was seventh fastest in the second Mercedes but suffered a three-place penalty.

Verstappen shades Piastri for pole at Silverstone

"We are quite quick on the straight, we have to wait and see what tomorrow will do but I am happy -- it is a big boost for the team and excited to go racing tomorrow.' (Photo by Andrej ISAKOVIC / AFP) Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed pole for the British Grand Prix after qualifying at Silverstone on Saturday. McLaren's championship leader Oscar Piastri will start alongside the Dutchman on the front row of Sunday's race. Piastri's teammate Lando Norris starts on the second row with the Mercedes of George Russell for company. Piastri took provisional pole until Verstappen produced a perfect final flying lap to front the grid by only a tenth of a second from the Australian. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc made it an all Ferrari third row. 'It was tricky out there with the wind, it was all shifting around a bit and around here with these cars, it is extremely sensitive to it,' said four-time former world champion Verstappen. 'This is a proper track, when you have to go flat out you have to be super committed. 'We are quite quick on the straight, we have to wait and see what tomorrow will do but I am happy — it is a big boost for the team and excited to go racing tomorrow,' the 27-year-old added.
