Egyptian league's new season to include 21 clubs after cancelling relegation - Egyptian Football

Al-Ahram Weekly19-05-2025
The 2025/2026 Egyptian League will feature 21 teams instead of the usual 18, following the Egyptian Pro League's approval of a vote by clubs to cancel relegation for this season.
The Egyptian Pro League held a meeting with representatives from the league's clubs on Sunday to determine the format for the upcoming season, which is set to begin in mid-August 2025 and run until the end of May 2026.
Pyramids FC, Zamalek, and Harras El-Hodoud were absent from the meeting.
Relegation-threatened clubs requested the Pro League to cancel relegation this season, citing the exceptional format being applied for the first time.
The proposal was put to a vote, and all the clubs agreed to cancel relegation this season.
As a result, the new season will feature the 18 existing clubs along with the three promoted teams from the second division.
Arab Contractors and Wadi Degla have secured their places in the Premier League, while the third promoted side has yet to be determined.
According to the Egyptian Pro League, the new season will adopt a single-round format, with all 21 clubs participating.
The top seven teams will then proceed to compete for the title in another single round.
The remaining clubs will battle it out to determine which four teams will be relegated.
Finally, the current number of foriegn players for each club {eight players} won't be changed despite some calls to increase it.
President of the Pro League Ahmed Diab also said to Egyptian media that their will be a two-year transitional period after which the domestic league will return to its normal format with 18 clubs.

AFC hit China's Shandong with two-year ban over no-show - World

China's Shandong Taishan have been banned from Asian club competitions for two years and fined after their no-show for a crunch match earlier this year. The Chinese Super League side were booted out of the region's Champions League Elite in February after withdrawing hours before a game against South Korea's Ulsan. The Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) disciplinary and ethics committee has now barred the team from all AFC tournaments "up to and including the 2026/27 season", according to a summary of a July 30 decision posted online on Monday. It fined the club $50,000. Shandong was ordered to repay a $600,000 participation fee and a $200,000 performance bonus to the Kuala Lumpur-based AFC. It must also pay compensation of $40,000 to South Korea's Ulsan for "damages and losses claimed". After withdrawing at the 11th hour from the February 19 match, Shandong said they were "unable to form a team" because of "serious" health issues within the travelling squad. "We deeply regret this situation and apologise to the AFC, Ulsan FC, the fans, and the community," they said at the time, without explaining exactly what the health issues were. They had done pre-match media duties on the eve of the game. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) Ghana's Partey granted bail on rape charges - Africa

Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey was granted conditional bail on Tuesday after appearing in a London court on rape and sexual assault charges. The 32-year-old Ghana international has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey was charged four days after leaving the Gunners when his contract expired at the end of June. The midfielder stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. British police said they first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he "denies all the charges against him", adding he welcomed "the opportunity to finally clear his name". Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million ($60 million) from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 52 times for the Gunners last season, scoring four goals. Overall he played 167 games for the club, scoring nine times. Partey has also made 51 appearances for Ghana. An Arsenal spokesman previously said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case." Reports in recent days have linked Partey with a move to Spanish club Villarreal.
